Every time I work with AI, I find out how worthless it really is. I don't understand why people hold up AI as this magical super power that will solve all our problems. Even this video basically says AI doesn't really help as most legal documents are just boilerplate documents. In other words, they are fill in the blank documents. No AI needed. That being said, I agree family court is corrupt.

What are the violent crime statistics nowadays in jolly old England? Home invasions? Rape? Just curious how well the freedom to be a defenseless sheep is working out over there.
@robertjenkins61326 жыл бұрын
@Tiger - I do not doubt the crime rate is higher in the USA, but the main reason the USA has so many in prison is because of Draconian laws and sentencing guidelines (particularly for the Drug War), which far exceed what is needed for deterrence. In the UK, even if there are the same laws (for example, laws against drugs), the punishment will typically not be so severe, and thus there is a smaller percentage of people in prison.

when the knowledge of the law ceases to be treated as a commodity, the world becomes a slightly better place to live.
@jimlovesgina6 жыл бұрын
I guess. Assertions without evidence can easily be dismissed.
@nonmagicmike7236 жыл бұрын
But it _is_ a commodity. It takes resources to learn the law (time, effort, money). So that knowledge will have material value, which can be exchanged for other material value (like money). Now if that commodity can be made cheaper and more easily accessible through increased automation, then great.
@nicholasbrosseau60356 жыл бұрын
@@nonmagicmike723 Correct me if I'm wrong, but people of your mind think of this like a printing press for legalese? I'm sort of there with you, but, is it possible that AI might do the same thing which lawyers have and convolute the system to the point where humans basically can't keep up?
@nonmagicmike7236 жыл бұрын
Nicholas Brosseau - That's unlikely, because the machines' ultimate command isn't profit or moneymaking, but resolving problems or providing answers by rote. They have no ulterior instruction to go further than that, and so they'll have no incentive to convolute the system for their own "gain". These sound like basic operations anyway. The only thing that might convolute them are the convoluted laws themselves.

Legal Fees are high because of the barriers to entry. Once you pass the LSAT and get accepted to a law school, you are looking at $100K to $200K plus to get a law degree in the US. That is part of the problem. The other is, some legal situations require legal representation by a licensed Attorney without exception. Since Judges are also lawyers, they almost always require a defendant to acquire legal representation when it comes to criminal matters particularly.

I hate how these things get turned into a competition. Yes the US is very competitive but The UK views the US as a partner. We share the same common law. We share many freedoms and in fact many of the separations of power and limitations in The US come from The UK. When someone says The UK is better because "x,y,z" they're talking shit. This doesn't mean that Americans should retaliate and get defensive. You've got the biggest economy, highest standard of living, and most protected citizens of ANY country in the world. That doesn't mean every country outside the US is a shit hole though and it's worth remembering that your country has it's roots in the European Enlightenment so while you are destinct, you're also connected to the history of this entire planet for better or for worse.
