At just 24 years old, David Litt became a speechwriter at the White House. Landing such a prestigious job when you've just barely graduated college is pretty impressive, but ironically, Litt never intended to work in politics.
"I was on a plane and we had just began our initial descent," Litt told Seeker's Laura Ling. "And I was channel-surfing on the free airplane cable and I saw this candidate who I had heard of but didn't know a lot about named Barack Obama. By the time that speech was over I was like, 'Never mind, whatever he is doing, I want to be part of that.'"
Litt wasn't just inspired by Obama, he was filled with hope in a way he'd never experienced before. He desperately wanted to be part of the change that this charismatic presidential candidate kept going on about. After moving to Washington D.C. in 2009, Litt began working for a private firm specializing in speech writing. Then in 2011, the job offer at the White House materialized.
"You have to realize how high the stakes are," said Litt. "We would write speeches knowing that there are people whose full-time job is to pick apart every single word the President says, and sometimes just to take things out of context, and that can be incredibly intimidating."
Litt left the White House in 2015. He’s currently working on a book about his experience, entitled “That Hopey, Changey Thing,” which will be published by Ecco Press in 2017. Litt now puts his comedy skills to good use as a head writer and producer for Funny or Die.

President Obama is an intelligent and educated man. Stop bad mouthing about him for having a speech writer. All presidents have a speech writer because they are swamped with other important tasks to attend to. There are plenty of conferences and events where people asked him questions randomly and he answered them with class and humor. Listen to Trump....Big difference! Cheers from Canada.

People claiming this is proof that everything is a lie are such idiots. The speechwriter doesn't dictate any of the policies, themes or ideas within the speech. The speechwriter is not involved in any of those decisions. Speeches are designed to relay back information to the public, all the decisions have been thought through and decided by the president and his team, the spechwriter makes it sound engaging.

ThunderHawk In 1945, there were 41 people working for every American receiving Social Security benefits. By 2030, there will be two workers for every American receiving Social Security and Medicare benefits. If any issue needs a president to “bend the arc of history,” it is this one. But Obama, like Bush and Bill Clinton before him, not only gave up on entitlement reform after grasping the political pain involved in such changes, he basically stopped talking about this gigantic problem. On foreign policy, Obama inherited an awful mess and then - heeding the wishes of most Americans - began to disentangle our nation from its painful wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. He was wise to end the U.S. isolation of Cuba. But Obama’s initial failure to assess the threat posed by the Islamic State remains baffling and hints at naivete about jihadism’s powerful appeal. And in Syria, to the disappointment of many U.S. allies, America’s hands-off approach to the civil war helped trigger a massive refugee crisis with such far-reaching fallout that it appears to be remaking European politics. It is not just self-serving for Obama to insist that his options were either a full-on ground war against the Assad regime or occasional airstrikes. It is wrong. Meanwhile, China has continued to expand its presence in the South Chinese Sea and to cultivate better ties with neighboring countries without a meaningful U.S. response. It was once inconceivable that such traditional U.S. allies as South Korea might choose to partner with China. No more. Given all this and Russia’s growing cyber threat, it is impossible to look at where America stood in the world on Jan. 20, 2009, and where it stands now and conclude our nation is a safer place. The Obama administration has been the least transparent and the most antagonistic toward the media since the Nixon administration. A 2013 report by the Committee to Protect Journalists documents case after case of whistleblowers being punished and public documents being kept from the public. So much for Obama’s promise to lead “the most transparent administration in history.” Not too mention how Obama lied about being born in Hawaii, he even later admitted he was born in Kenya not once but twice And I don’t even want to get started on Obamagate, which is one of the most criminal things done in American history

It was a joke graphic at the time that right wingers were losing their minds because Michelle started wearing bangs. Just like they flipped out completely when she wore a sleeveless dress. But Mrs. Trump posing nude with another woman... that's fine. Not a peep.

I love David. I drove him in Louisville last year and he is just as charming, nice and funny as this video is telling. I tell people constantly about this guy and my short time getting to pick his brain. When asked “what do you want to be when you grow up?” (like I would ask everyone who I drove), he said “This.” I’ve found the people who are content in life are the best kind of people, and he seems to be just that. Great guy!

When I grow up, I’d love to be a speechwriter for a president, or someone of a high status. My parents say that they’d love for me to be a writer at some point. So, I’ve put my real dream of becoming a cartoonist on the back burner in order to learn more about speechwriting.

Obama's 'Yes We Can' speech in Chicago, Illinois when we won the Presidency is quite possibly the greatest speech written in my lifetime, maybe since 'I Have A Dream'. It captured a nation and instilled hope where there seemed to be none. Also the way Obama delivered it was impassionate and heartfelt. I'll never forget it.

You go from being a fan of someone's to not being a fan just because of a 5 minute video that does not provide any basis to how the speeches are written, what and/or how much the president actually contributes, etc. Nice. Also, if you want to know the guy that actually writes Obama's speeches with him (yes, with the president) it's Jon Favreau - not the actor. Watch some videos from him and you''ll have a better understanding of how it works and this guy will still be impressive, but he is barely a player in the game.

Wow-this is pretty cool....I’ve always wanted to know how a President gets behind the scene writers to help express a idea of policies that are potential solutions to resolve problems within our communities. It’s awesome that have a writing team to help the President to publicly speak to the public in the most effective way possible so the public would believe the ideas will work.

Kinda misleading here... yes the title talks about the speechwriter behind his best jokes but if we're looking into who really had a significant say in his speeches early days and in 2008 it was Jon Favreau (speechwriter not actor) who wrote his more inspirational stuff that got him elected and which this guy refers to as inspiring him.
