US President Barack Obama's former chief speechwriter Jon Favreau was presented with the James Joyce Award from the UCD Literary & Historical Society, University College Dublin.
Once described by US President Obama as his "mind reader", Jon Favreau's words are credited as having contributed to getting Barack Obama elected President.
Favreau worked on both the 2008 and 2012 election campaigns as chief speechwriter, and later served as Head of Speechwriting in the White House.
Previous recipients of the UCD Literary & Historical Society, James Joyce Award include: Hollywood comedian, Will Ferrell; the Beatle's music producer and arranger, the man known as the Fifth Beatle, Sir George Martin; Harry Potter author, JK Rowling; Nobel prize-winning economist, Professor Paul Krugman; former Monty Python, Michael Palin; and The Who frontman and legendary rock star, Roger Daltrey.
The UCD James Joyce Award is named after the University College Dublin alumni and author of Ulysses and Finnegans Wake, James Joyce. It is presented by the UCD Literary and Historical Society to individuals who have achieved outstanding success in their given field.

These are truths that really shine, especially when things seem so dark right now in our nation's capital. I miss all that President Obama embodied. And I wonder if we will EVER have a commander in chief whom we can respect, who values and honors the American people and their dreams the way he did. This was a phenomenal speech that, for the injurious effect of our current POTUS, applied a much needed poultice. I am thankful!

John Connor Many of us have heard him speak long before he was in politics because he was always a person who did whatever he could to help indigent people! Trust me, he could write well and he spoke very well. Even educated celebrities like Oprah Winfrey said he blew them away the first time they heard him speak. President Obama was very well known and very popular for his writing and public speaking skills which is one of the reasons he became the first Black president of the Harvard University Law Review. Anyone who completes graduate school has to be a good writer. I know this because I had to write a paper in order to get into graduate school. Once I got in, I had to maintain a 3.0 GPA (minimum), I graduated at the top of my class, summa cum laude with the only 4.0 GPA. A speechwriter does not teach his or her boss how to write or speak. He or she is hired because his or her boss is extremely busy with other very important responsibilities and obligations. Most people prefer to hire someone with less experience because it is easier to train, shape, and mold them to think and write the way they do. President Obama always edited everything his speechwriter wrote, actually teaching him how to write! I have followed his career and although he joked about teleprompters, he hardly ever used one. Teleprompters are no more than a set of index cards that one is taught to use during one's speech so one doesn't forget the order in which one has prioritized each topic. Even Trump goes off his teleprompter! Old school speakers who took communication classes in college, as did I, were taught public speaking without digital or electronic teleprompters. Well, that was probably because they did not exist back then.

@@reginalddyson9716 You cried because a 106 yo woman voted for Obama? She wasn’t “frail.” It’s just a story Jon trots out at every speech. And yvonne? Jon is NOT classy. Being gay (He lives with Ronan Farrow who is TRULY a great person and writer with his books, latest being “Catch and Kill.” Ronan graduated from law school at age 21!) he was famously in love with Obama. And he can’t let go! For three years he’s made money having been Obama’s speechwriter. It’s the past--MOVE ON!. Classy? Here’s Jon ripping apart Hillary in 2016! www.vox.com/2016/10/18/13309794/hillary-clinton-speeches-obama-former-speechwriter-jon-favreau-podcasts-recode-media A CLASSY person would have gone to work for Hillary’s campaign. Instead he tears her down from the sidelines. He’s a disgusting person who for the rest of his life will talk about the LOVE OF HIS LIFE, Barack Obama. I truly like President Obama. I lived two apartment buildings over from his white grandparents where Obama grew up in Mo’ili’ili--suburb of Honolulu. “Barry" worked at the Baskins and Robbins across the street. But I have a life! Favreau will be 106 years old and will still be babbling on about "I wrote speeches for Obama!" If he’s so damned classy and smart why doesn’t he run for office? Naah! Too easy making money on his past life.

If you don’t attract the organisations with money, you will lack the means necessary to fund the election campaigns. The story about sitting under the desk to speak on the phone with that lady in the midst of such a historical moment in time says a lot about this man's character. The first African American U.S President was about to go give a speech that he wrote and he instead chose to share the moment with a 106 year old woman who stood in line for 3 hours to vote to see this moment.
