One thing i love about 'Jack' characters in myth and fairy tales is the fact that some cultures have decided they are all the same Jack. So Jack from jack and the beanstalk is also the jack who jumped over the candlestick, springheeled jack, the jack from jack and jill, jack frost and so on, all at different stages of his life, transforming from merely a rather dim child into an eldritch force of nature

It's a long-standing informal way to refer to "just any random male," usually intended for strangers and social outcasts, dating back to the 14th century (jakke). We use "john" somewhat similarly, as when police use it to refer to unidentified males. In other words, "Jack the Ripper" = "Unidentified socially deviant male, the Ripper"

This story makes me think of all the macabre things the Victorians got up to. Their fascination with the dead and supernatural beings is legendary. Disabled people being used in side shows the ouija board, propping dead relatives up for photo shots and of course remember the tales of vampires and monsters which were popular reading matter widely circulated even at a relatively low cost. But even today we have the same syndrome happening with the U.F.O's. As for the superhero story: I have heard that these incredible characters are a deliberately planned attempt to make citizens who are living through a very difficult situation in their country not to lose hope and to feel that someone or something out there has their back. As for the multiple sightings of Jack I am sure a lot of pranksters were involved and a lot of the reports could have been used by the media to promote the sales of their newspapers. Humans love the strange and dreadful to peak their curiosity.

Good video. The last named sighting wasn't in Liverpool though. The final one recorded, to my knowledge, was again in Sheffield in an area called Attercliffe, during 1977. At the time he was referred to as 'the prowler', a large figure with glowing red eyes was reported to the police. Law enforcement then gave chase while he leapt along roof tops with 30ft bounds. Following the chase, it was concluded to be SHJ. There were several eye witnesses to this event as well.

I had a period of time in my life where I was haunted by the Night Hag. Here's what happened: (One thing you should know about me, I'm not scared of anything. I could sleep naked on the street without so much as a hint of anxiety.) Anyways, it started with me waking-up, with sleep paralysis, and I'd be PETRIFIED that something "unnatural" was right-outside the door to my bedroom. VERY ODD for me. This happened a few times over the course of a week. Then, next, I'd start waking-up (without sleep paralysis) and for the BRIEFEST of moments I'd see a dark shadow or figure moving across my bedroom. This happened a few times over the course of about a week as well. Next, I fell asleep one night, only to be IMMEDIATELY WOKEN UP by something tapping my foot. This happened only once. Lastly, I woke-up with sleep paralysis one morning, at 7-8AM, and I was sleeping on my back (which is odd for me.) Anyways, as I open my eyes, there she was. This old "distorted" witch, her facial features were INSANELY out of proportion, and she was standing RIGHT NEXT TO ME and my bed. Leaning over, deadly quiet, peering into my eyes, unmoving. Oddly, THIS TIME I wasn't fearful, not in the slightest. The emotions which came to surface were annoyance, disgust, and contempt (for her.) She was entirely "black and white," and she didn't seem to be reflecting the morning light. Rather, it was like she was made of tiny black-holes and was ABSORBING all the light except blackness. I closed my eyes to go back to sleep, and to end the paralysis, and NEVER experienced anything like that again. Other things of note: During this time of my life, I was experiencing "bad luck" the likes of which I'd thought was impossible. And, on the day that I saw her, when I went to pee, it was bright pink. I pee'd blood. That never happened again either, and it was years ago now. If she is real, it's like you can only see / experience it when you're in that state RIGHT between awake/sleep, that is her window to communicate and interact with you. And, only natural day-light seems to give her shape.

The jumpers did hold weights in their hands which they flung upward to help propel them. Putting springs in your boots wouldn't actually work. They'd just break your legs.

Birmingham, it was a Peaky Blinder. And it wasn't coincidence that Jack in the box was so named. As Thoughty2 mentioned the toy was a toy designed to make a child react in a manner that would make them jump, it was given the name Jack in the box because of the frightening number of scarry Jacks, Jack being a generic term for the Bogey man at this point in history. So Thoughty2 you were actualy spot on.

@@bigballerbenji7217 theres the "Rattenfänger von Hameln" which basically means rat catcher of Hameln( a city in Germany). He was some dude who got pissed at the people in Hameln who didn't pay him for catching their rats. So he took the children of Hameln an brought them to a cave where he just closed them in.

There was a documentary about several unexplained phenomena some years ago and I seem to remember that sightings of Jack in several British cities coincided with a Circus being nearby on several occasions. That and the Victorians had a particular penchant for such stories, in Penny Dreadfuls and Gothic horror.

You forgot Jack o’ lantern when you named other well known “jack’s” from fairy tales. The (in)famous Jack who supposedly walks around with a lantern and who doesn’t have a head, if I remember correctly

This video was fascinating! I'd heard about Spring-Heeled Jack through a few sparse items found online. Since the story was ried to the place where my gggGrandparents lived after their marriage in 1835, I was fascinated to learn more about the times in which they lived. You included more about this time in history than any other source I have found. Great research and terrific presentation - as usual!

The first time I've heard of "Sring Heal Jack" was years ago when I had a book called "True Stories and Amazing Facts" that was one of the stories in there. Years later, (yet still years ago from now) I once was in the house and heard a commotion on the roof, I ran out of the house and seen someone run across the roof and jump onto the neighbor's roof. I saw my husband at the side of the house, while still in shock I asked did you see that he replied what? (obviously didn't see it.) I told him what happen. His concern was whoever did it may have damaged his roof. I called him "Spring Healed Jack" My stepson called him the rooftop runner, my stepson told me a couple of weeks after that incident that "the Roof Top Runner" as he called him did it again while he was at home.

@@Dark0neone No, a cat won't make that kind of clammer and I saw it was a man, I saw the man jump from our roof to the neighbor's roof, It was a huge leap. Totally surprised me, it was during the day time.
