Its no wonder that a lot of horror is based on the Victorian era because it just makes you believe everything could've existed in the darkness, along the alley or behind a corner. Bailey L Jenner Its called the Strange Affair of Spring-Heeled Jack be Mark Hodder. Its a cool combination of steampunk and alternate history, and features several historical figures from that period. I certainly recommend it.

I was actually introduced to a man of this name in the "Skulduggery Pleasant" book series. He could not breathe fire, but he enjoyed killing people(especially children) and could easily leap onto and across rooftops. I read about Spring Heeled Jack in the 80s as a kid as well. The book I read was from Reader's Digest called Strange Stories and Amazing Facts. It's where I first read about a lot of cryptids and ghost stories we are familiar with today. I still have the book too.

Jack was a character from a book on tape that I listened to as a kid. In that story he was basically a Victorian super hero who looked like the devil and literally had springs on his heals. Really cool to learn about his origins.

Lord6of6the6Blackmoon I think the industrial revolution probably had quite a bit to do with it. Also life didn’t get better for the factory workers. It would have been terrifying, especially for young women, coming from a quiet village to live and work in the cities which were expanding so rapidly. I bet loads of the women did feel predated on. There would be a lot that was unfamiliar to people. I think he sounds like a pretty good representative of the industrial revolution. A figure like him would have made a lot of sense to the people of those times. Especially the poor who had little or no protection.

My aunt and uncle had a terrifying encounter with a Spring Tail Jack creature in 1932 at Needles, California when they were teenagers. Even into their later years, they both said that it had terrified them. My uncle served in combat during WW2, but he remained even more fearful of this creature than the battlefield, and he did not like to go outside at night as that was when the encounter happened.

@@Rabid.Prinxe My aunt was visiting a girlfriend (teenagers) and my grandparents sent her younger brother to walk her home as it was now dark out.. On the way, they saw a tall figure at a distance that was up the street and in front of them, it leaped across the two lane highway in 3 jumps. Surprised but not afraid, they continued walking, and sharing what they had just seen. When they passed the spot where the leaper had appeared, he was nowhere in sight. But then, they also started hearing noises that followed my aunt and uncle as they walked home. These noises sounded like they were coming from almost every front yard as they went pass, and sometimes it sounded like gibberish. A crashing sound that came from behind caused both my aunt and uncle to turn around. Once again, they saw the dark figure leap across the street in 3 jumps. At this point, they started walking fast, and my uncle pulled out his pocket knife and held it at the ready.. Immediately behind them they heard a giggling cry and a hand reached right over the top of my uncle and seized his knife hand. It picked him right off the ground and held him pressed against the chest of this figure. Another hand went under his chin, pulling his head back, and a terrible face kissed him on the mouth. He was dropped as soon as my aunt started screaming. Both of my aunt and uncle said the figure was very tall, had an exceptionally long face, and was covered by a heavy topcoat. They both said the "man" didn't look completely human. The leaper jumped away in one bound into the nearest yard and then leapt up and onto the roof. They, of course, sprinted home scared to death and out of breath. As crazy as this whole story sounds - my aunt and uncle swore it was absolutely true - and you couldn't doubt their sincerity.

The first time I heard about Spring Heeled Jack was in a comic book hero video. It talked about the leaping prankster/demon at great length. In the Penny Dreadfuls, Spring Heeled Jack was portrayed as somewhat of a superhero. Saving damsels in distress and taking on evildoers. I remember the Jackie Chan Adventures cartoon back when TV was still good. There's an episode with Spring Heeled Jack and he is portrayed as a leprechaun with a tongue for rhyming as he speaks. The Tiger Talisman was used, splitting him in two, the Talismans power being the separation of one, parting good from bad and in Jackie's case, his bad side was called Black Tiger and his good side is a cowardly wimpy mess, but he still maintained his martial artistry. I believe spring-heel jack is simply a wendigo raised in a completely different environment as traditionals, traditional wendigo represent what people feared most at the time, for instance the bitter cold of winter the hopelessness of being alone in the wilderness, spring-heel represents the fears of the people of Victorian England smog, dark alleys and dangerous metal machinery, most malevolent entities represent the fears of the local townspeople and villagers. as it has always been and will always be.

That book, written for teens, substituted truth with a lot of drama and scared me silly. I read about 'Spring heeled Jack' when young but that was a stage name of accounts of a regular human who through a technique of swinging his arms while holding metal weights in either hands while jumping could leap great distances with some of his performances including leaping across canals & over large gaps in between buildings....perhaps he had a perverted hobby of night time visits with ill intentions to ladies.

He also made an appearance in Cradley Heath in The Black Country (the West midlands) UK in the 1900s. He was witnessed jumping and leaping off chimney tops and roofing of public houses, churches and other buildings. Not to be confused with Joe Darby the local Olympic jumper of the day who was said to lepa the width of an canal or the height of an horse and over it and was very famous for it too.

My aunt in Idaho saw Spring Heeled Jack in the 80s. He was standing in a field and then jumped up and flew away. My aunt and those with her were terrified. Jack is also in America and is out on the prowl for more victims...
