One of my very favorite episode of stargate SG1. This is the first time we get to see thor the asgard. Only this small section.
Just imagine after taxing your brain, that you get to meet a real alien. If only. ;)

@Collin Friday, and I am not quite sure how they would’ve broken to it to Thor’s humans or Freya’s humans that their protectors actually died…though Elwin (can’t remember her name?) may have had regular contact with Thor after this scene, and so could probably emotionally prepare her people for the awful news. Or as a complete alternative, let’s hope that the Asgard took some sort of measures to help their peoples cope with the loss.

The stargate works both ways. They were waiting for the native Sumarans (or whatever was their name) to reach such technological advance to start doing their own expeditions through the gate (the trials were to test their progress, not to hide weapons or what). Thor's Hammer was to protect them from incoming danger from the gate, but the Asgard left the gate there for outgoing adventures in the future. It's still kinda wacky though. Why wouldn't the Asgard take the gate and install it at the right time (when the Sumarans make the proper advance)? But you can't say, that it's overall flawed. It worked for quite some time flawlessly, until SG-1 came and seriously f*cked up by having Teal'c on the team. The only thing the Asgard really didn't think over was that some of the enemy forces could ever switch sides (for any reason). Can you blame them?

@@martinm.1967 The Hammer was sufficient. Every Goauld or Jaffa that comes through the Gate would immediately get their ass sucked into the Labyrinth where the only way out is through Thors Hammer. And while in the Labyrinth the weapons were rendered useless. Literally the only way to get out there is go through Thors Hammer or with outside help of a Human that knows where Thors hammer is and has sufficient weaponry AND is willing to help the Goa'uld or in SG1 case, one Jaffa. And SG1 is about the only real case where this could even happen, they're a complete statistical anomaly in that sense.

@@TheOmegaXicor Weaker Systems Lords routinely tried to claim worlds outside the control of stronger Lords, it is one of the few ways a System Lord can grow stronger without directly challenging a more powerful Lord. Apophis was cold dialing lost worlds in the opening of Season 1 as well, in the hope of expanding his domain. Heru'ur was a minor System Lord like Apophis was in the early show. Also the cost of trying out the address was at most a squad of Jaffa so it's not a big loss and there is a potentially huge reward.

Maybe he didn't waste resources aka Jaffa regularly, but for some reason decided to try his luck and it was a Jackpot (well it seemed in the beginning). Maybe Heru Ur didn't get the mail from the other System Lords about which planet is Asgard protected and which isn't. There's so much "maybes" and so little time.

To all you folks pushing your glasses to say "Actually, you use the diameter instead of radius..." it is more practical to determine a circle's radius since the center and the perimeter are easier to plot out... ...and the diameter is merely the radius _doubled._ That was, in fact, how I was taught in school to calculate a circumference: _pi_ against 2 times the radius.

That is the entire point of pi, you measure the circumference and then divide by 3.14159 and you get the diameter. Pi is based on the relationship between a circles diameter and the and circumference, not the radius. The whole point of the scene is to prove that they understand the relationship between the diameter of a circle and it's circumference. The funniest part is that when they first look at the wall of runes it shows a circle painted there with a line across it showing the "diameter". The wall gives the answer within the runes and the depiction of "diameter" across the circle. The actors just didn't have enough understanding to get it correct. Clearly the prop makers got it right... That was our first assignment in physics class my freshman year in HS, we were each given a dozen circles of varying size, we had to measure the circumference and the diameter and then solve for the unknown variable "pi"... It was an incredibly simple means of helping us to understand how to mathematically determine constants an relationships and how plot them on a graph to solve for "k" the unknown constant. Eventually leading up to our fourth year of physics an astro physics course my senior year of HS where we used the constants in the refraction of light to determine the various frequencies of star light passed through a diffraction grating. From that we were able to determine the chemical makeups of those stars using these frequency bands.

Consider that Earth is the oldest human populated world (or at least one of the oldest, if we ignore the fact that the ancients are technically speaking humans themselves) So earth had an headstart in technological developpment. There are a few worlds which had evolved way ahead of earth tho but I assume the asgard did not protect those. I’m thinking of the aschen world for exemple.

I still reccon SGU would have been a better show had it not been in the Stargate continuity. It's worst moments were when it was trying to link itself to SG1/SGA at least in season 1. In season 2 they were setting up the time loop paradox that was going to take multiple seasons to get through, but then they got cancelled. Time paradox arcs are always plot holey in episodic shows. What's your worst example of SGU plot holes?

In one of my favorite Stargate novels an accident strands SG-1 in 1947 beneath the mountain. A future Carter and a guy named Herbert George show up and send Vala and Jack (who was temporarily in command of the SGC again due to Landry having surgery) back using the Time Jumper to rescue them. They get caught up in a MASSIVE misadventure where they learn the truth about the Roswell crash. The Roswell aliens were an Asgard named An and several clones of Loki. They accidentally create a slightly alternate timeline with their meddling in history and rescue An (leading to a great scene where Jack flies the Roswell UFO which is actually an Asgard escape pod) but then have to deal with an invasion by Ra and Qetesh. With the help of An and an alternate Mitchell, the team steals two atomic bombs using Asgard beaming technology and destroys Ra and Qetesh's ships ending the invasion. An chooses to remain on Earth to create a treaty between the Asgard and humans while Mitchell takes command of the enemy army and orders them to retreat. They then return to 1908 where the REAL Mitchell and Vala were trapped (in the alternate timeline their Vala ended up possessed by Qetesh with Mitchell as her First Prime though in a Teal'c type capacity) and returned to the correct 1947 where they rescued An. They then took him home with him where Future Carter and Herbert departed with him saying he was the Asgard version of Einstien and could be a lot of help. Before leaving, Herbert revealed his real name to be Herbert George Wells. He had really been HG Wells all along and it was briefly suggested that their experience in the alternate 1947 was the basis for War of the Worlds.

Lazy writing. The worse part was they had to die when Ori ships approached, instead of helping the humans first. All it takes is a few minutes of their time to launch their O'Neill class ships from the planet. Fight off Ori, then commit suicide. But nope... they had to catch the train to Valhalla. But the diameter (D) is always twice the radius (R). D=2R; If we add the circumference (C) then Pi = C÷D = C÷(2R) and thus pi can be defined by either the radius or the diameter providing the circumference is also known. The ability to find pi is a sign of significant intelligence and thus an advanced species as it can not be easily done intentionally by using geometric methods. Because of this it can't easily be measured in nature yet is present within and universally constant in value. Read the Wikipedia article on 'circling the square' if you want proof of this.

It has always bugged me that of all characters, Carter would get pi wrong. Pi is the circumference divided by the diameter. Or *two* times the radius.

Yeah. Pi is not a formula; it's part of a formula, but not the formula itself. It's actually a constant. You multiply Pi by the radius squared to get the area. Or multiply Pi by the diameter to get the circumference. But the salient point is it's not itself a formula, just a part of several different formulas.

Pi is defined as the constant resulting from the circumference of any circle divided by its diameter. Pretty shoddy work on the writer's part. Didn't any of the writers/cast/crew take high school math and notice? It was also a pretty lame test. FYI Pi is the relationship between a circles circumference and its diameter... not its radius

But... pi is the constant used to find the circumference of the circle by finding the circumference, not the radius. The two are the same by a factor of two but the constant pi is based on the diameter, its Tau which finds the circumference based on the radius.
