USS Enterprise (CVN-80), the third in a line of prominent Navy aircraft carriers to bear that name. The Gerald Ford-class nuclear-powered Leviathan is scheduled to enter service as early as 2028. But the origins of America's next Big E carrier actually began in 2012 with the decommissioning of CVN-65, the second Enterprise carrier.

I served on USS Ranger (CV-61), USS Constellation (CV-64) and USS Independence (CV-62). Great ships with bold names and name histories. Glad to see Enterprise come back in a new form. Wish the aircraft carriers I served on were also honored by commissioned new carriers with their names. Also, stop naming ships after politicians that never served a day in their lives in the US Armed Forces. Disgusting.

At best, he'll get a destroyer named after him. Destroyers are generally named after important people. Carriers seem to mostly get named after presidents now, which I really disagree with. I understand it for some important presidents like Washington and Lincoln, but we really shouldn't name our most powerful warships after some mere politicians. Go back to naming them after battles and important events like Lexington, Saratoga, Yorktown, etc. Using heritage WW2 names is also a good choice.

What a great heritage of the navy and what a beast, she'll be in service well into the 2100's, long after most of us are gone, but what a tremendous legacy for all Americans. God bless America 🇺🇸

Nuclear powered carriers are only in service for about 50 years. They get replaced with newer technology. I'm a plank owner of USS Carl Vinson CVN-70. I reported aboard before it was commissioned. It is due to be decommissioned in about 8 years.

When I was in the Navy the "ship" I was on was in the Cuban Blockade. It was an oiler carrying fuel oil and J-P5 jet fuel. We came alongside the "Big E." It was ENORMOUS. It was something like 2X the length and the top of the mast didn'e even reach the flight deck. We passed on "token fuel," that is we just passed over the fuel lines but didn't offload any fuel. One of the main reasons was because they were landing and taking off aircraft. After the exercise was done and the lines were all taken back onboard the Captain of the Enterprise kicked the ship into passing gear. The rooster tail from the 4 screws driving the ship could have sunk the thing I was on. In 10 minutes or so the Big E was out of sight. What a ship! I'd sure like to see the new one after she's commissioned.

At work, I have the amazing vantage point of being within a stones throw of Cvn65, and also am currently supporting the construction of cvn80. A very fun perk of my work. Even more so since my grandfather worked on cvn65 in the navy long long ago.

350,000 SHP ~= 260MW add in 125MW of electrical power and you get 385 MW power from a 700MW thermal reactor. That means the conversion efficiency (steam power to mechanical power) is quite high. Which means they run very hot. Probably in the 700C range. I was RO trained at A1W and DLG(N)-25.

I forgot -- the names of Medal of Honor recipients definitely qualify for being honored as names of our carriers. Besides USN Doris Miller, I think USN Sergeant York, and USN Audie Murphy should definitely be honored since they inspire Americans to this day. Rightly or wrongly, their movies have kept their names alive through the years.

Worked in electronics for the Navy overhauling all reactor instrumentation during the 1980s, I think it was. It took some 65 employees on 3 shifts at Mare Island Naval Shipyard in Vallejo, CA some 8 months to do it all. Nice to see a new Enterprise under construction.

As a retired US Navy Aviation Maintenance Chief who served on many aircraft carriers, I like to see another next generation carrier named America. I know the US Navy has named an amphibious carrier by that name, but it is not a CVN. If not America, then I strongly feel the name should be CVN Jimmy Carter who honorably served in the Navy and became a US President.

My grandfather commanded USS Ticonderoga (CVA-14) the 1950’s. He didn’t care much for ships being named after a single person. A warship doesn’t fight with one man alone. In a way, it’s overlooking all the men who fought these great ships, and only recognize and pay tribute to one person.

What I really like is the fact that these vessels are running on electrical power even though generated by nuclear fission, but we're told that green renewable electric energy is not feasible. The Military uses electrical power bc it is efficient and economical but not for the citizenry that buys these carriers. We can't have cars that run hundreds of miles on one charge bc littler Tyler, Hunter, or Taylor may not get to go to Cornell or Oxford. #everybodyvotesbluein24 #M4A #cutMICwaste

35 years ago I was holidaying in Australia when the 1st USS ENTERPRISE aircraft carrier was docked in Sydney. It was absolutely huge, massive , gigantic. I met a group of those sailors playing billiards at a bar and asked them if that was the biggest aircraft carrier in the navy. They laughed and said it was the smallest and oldest. I was in awe. 20 years ago while taking a cruise out of the port in San Diego the cruise ship past another aircraft carrier and it was unbelievably huge. It dwarfed the cruise ship. If one tries to imagine how large these ships are, double or triple your imagination

🤔 . . . Still waiting for the commission of [Royal Tiger] class Battleships. Now, I know what you’re immediately thinking, but I’m not going to use what would be seen as a Battleship, when comparing sizes & armaments. Yes, it’ll be bigger than a frigate, but it’ll be smaller than a carrier. Its primary role is to provide flanking cover for the super carriers, even firing anti-aircraft & anti-missile shells, primarily in open waters.
