lol, that's a great comment. Why is Ripley so old? I just looked it up and in the book he's 25-years-old. This entire story makes no sense if he's in 40's. One would expect him to have formed some kind of identity by his 40's. It makes more sense for Ripley to be searching for an identity and the approval of Dickie when he's still young and growing.
@tixeright9120
@tixeright9120 Ай бұрын
@@GizmoMaltese absolutely. A mid-life crisis or fugitive situation could have pushed an older man to seek a new identity, but I doubt such a man would have hardly done it as a matter of personal obsession (which is a decidedly youthful feeling to have and maintain about anyone at all), and besides that is a whole different kind of story (and those stories have been told), than this one in which a miserable lone-wolf psycho seeking the acceptance of those he admires just ends up killing what he loves (and what hates him) in order to become what he loves (and what can forget about his old self), and it just makes sense that they met at college when Ripley was his more authentic self, deeply isolated from his peers by the profound clash between socio-economic classes.

People make comments with comparisons of well-known artists and the Netflix version of Ripley. I should say that cinematography is a form of art piece. It is more artistic than meeting Dickie. Ripley educates your sense of artistic eye. It is like you are in an art history class. RİPLEY IS A MASTERPİECE.

Damon and Law are so identified with the characters that any remake has a very steep uphill battle. And based on this segment it's way out of condition getting up that hill and puffing already. This scene doesn't really make sense. Why would they invite him to swim when Dickie's response is already kind of "meh" and Ripley is so awkward in his approach. Who'd impinge on a beautiful romantic day in the sun by letting some forgettable nobody glom onto you? What worked in the movie just doesn't happen here.
@gloriamontgomery6900

People dogging on the remake version here are missing the context that the scene is supposed to feel like the most awkward thing imaginable. It feels forced, sterile, and inauthentic because that's how the situation is. The episode leading up to and including this emphasizes how unnaturally Tom is forcing himself into this scenario, and how grueling the task is for him. It takes every element of social awkwardness and tedium that can possibly exist and dials it up - including them being the only people on the beach at the time. If the only way you've seen this scene is in this side-by-side comparison, then you're missing out on what the show is actually offering.

I never noticed the detail about Ripley's shoes on the beach. (Is he too poor to purchase new shoes?)
@AndyH-e2g
@AndyH-e2g Ай бұрын
That detail stayed with me as well and I couldn't quite get what they were saying so I did some research. I think that is the idea is that it shows his background and how he isn't completely camouflaged as such and he knows this leading to uncomfortable paranoia. While Ripley is aware of fashion he’s without the means to access it in the same way that the others are (he is poor) he has one shirt he washes out nightly, a threadbare cord jacket Dickie offers to replace and one pair of dress shoes that he has to wear to the beach (as you noticed). In many ways, the film is at pains to emphasise that, though Tom is good at what he does, he’s not quite good enough as Dickie, Marge and Freddie Miles all figure him out. The book itself says that Ripley manages to buy a swimsuit, “a black-and-yellow thing hardly bigger than a G-string” but not sandals. As he looks around at the “bronzed adolescent Italian boys,” he is “mortified at the big brown shoes on his feet and at his ghost-white skin.” Maybe the shame fuels the anger that leads to the murders.

@@DCI-Frank-Burnside Fair enough.The film and book - confess I've not read - can be evaluated on their own merits. Enjoy DiCaprio's work but he was far too "pretty"to be convincing in the 1995 "the Quick and the Dead". Just me? In the film I found Damon convincing in the part. Alain Delon was in the French version in the 60's - Purple Noon - he was perhaps even more attractive than Damon and Highsmith approved - tho' she was not apparently too thrilled that the ending was changed. I've reservations about Netflix's 2024 Ripley but think Highsmith would be chuffed that her work continues to find a new audience. Doubt The Talented Mr Riply could be made today -tourists would make location shooting impossible - and Italy was a big part of its charm.

I loved the 1999 version when I saw it as a random watch, not knowing anything about it. It sent me on to reading the Ripley books, I have just one left to read (god I'd have loved her to direct more of these and make a series with Damon) The 2024 series had me so excited after longing for another Ripley depiction for years and this is what we got. Painfully slow, tediously indulgent cinematography, dreadful casting (this scene being a typical example of the lack of chemistry between characters or magnetism of any of them, especially inviting him to swim like wtf). It just felt so off and the B&W (artistic and beautiful as some may find it, good for you if so) was just so ugly and distracting to a fault for me. This turbulent darkness beneath Damon's portrayal, juxtaposed to existing in the beauty and splendour of the locations in the 1999 version was poetic enough without having it rammed in our faces in this B&W style. It was an unnecessary drag compared with the constant intrigue and excitement of 1999 Great film, I'm glad it exists
