Within us, the dim cavern of the unconscious holds our forbidden feelings, secret wishes, destructive impulses, and creative urges. Over time, these “dark” forces take on a life of their own, forming the Shadow. A recurring theme in literature and legend, the Shadow is like an invisible twin, a stranger that is us, yet not us. When it acts out, we hurt ourselves or others.
As we bring it into awareness with shadow-work, it loses its grip on us and we experience deeper self-knowledge, greater authenticity, and greater choice over our thoughts and behaviors. We also discover that the contents of the Shadow are not all bad; even our undeveloped gifts, talents, and dreams lie dormant there-the gold in the dark side.
This talk will explore the formation of shadow in childhood, the common ways we encounter the shadow in life, and how to “romance” it, or make a conscious relationship with it.
The Shadow is not a problem to be solved; it’s a mystery to be faced.

I think of this material as 100% useful, but I cant help but to laugh at the Freudian slip at 18:29 “quack-tice” instead of practice 😂😂

There may be a shadow but NOBODY knows how to "integrate" it. All "shadow work" is feeble and empty.

If I were to go into detail about how I have integrated mine, it would be socially unacceptable to most people, hence I don’t talk about it except along close friends and my intimate partner. What I would call “shadow integration” is welcoming the darkest and most embarrassing desire in myself, and I mean _really_ exploring like an architect asking his wealthy client what kind of house the client wants to build. Like, I was asking in a spirit of, “I want to give this to you and I don’t care how bizarre or weird it is.” Finally, I got honest and wrote down exactly what I was wanting, along with how I wanted to feel if I had the desire fulfilled. That last part was the real key. Because no, I wasn’t going to act on the desire in its current, unrefined form. To truly qualify as being in the shadow, these things are likely socially unacceptable if not downright illegal. So, by finding the emotional state I wanted to feel, other parts of me started thinking, started exploring, started imagining socially ACCEPTABLE ways to reach that same emotional state. THAT is the “integration,” when you reach a kind of truce between what you found in the darkness and what you know can be beneficial and honoring of others. Then you can start testing it out and forming genuine relationships where your desires can be met by someone who is willing to assist you. It’s like tempering a sword, or refining gold. Ultimately, I’d say that shadow integration is taking your socially damaging desires and refining them into a healthy fulfillment through mutually beneficial arrangements with others.
