He's actually done a surprising number of comedic roles. Not necessarily full-on comedy movies but certainly roles that required decent comedic timing and a general talent for comedy: Dogma (and his cameos in other Kevin Smith movies), the Ocean's Trilogy, The Informant, Stuck On You, his cameo in Eurotrip, 30 Rock, his "feud" with Jimmy Kimmel, his sketches on SNL, and those are just the ones off the top of my head. I don't think he was ever going to be confident enough in his comedic talent to make it as a comedian doing a lot of full-on comedy movies (his first truly comedic role was in Dogma and Kevin Smith mentioned on the commentary that it took a while for him to settle into it) but all in all I'd say he's done just as many comedic roles as serious ones.

It's all a game it's called: do you want to play doctor and patient like we did when we were kids? It's every westerners easterners northerners southerners or theologians/anti-theologans childhood fantasy practically-hence why it became a job so people can make a living. Anyways, everything is a thought; we're made of atoms-which contain an infinite number of smaller particles starting with the electrons which has leptons etc..., that come from the void of space, your sight precrpetion isn't coming from your eyes but from your organic brain, your ego is a thought of the total sum of learned condtioning- which also comes from your physical brain and everything changes constantly. Kiss my ass and happy 2019.

Sue Derry no he doesn't try to open up to anyone at all, actually quite the opposite. So the point is that he went into every therapists office with the intention of goofing off and messing with them to watch them get flustered. It was entertaining for him. Basically beating them at their own game because he was very intelligent and can see through the fake let me heal you talk about your emotions thing. That's why the therapist (robin williams) actually got somewhere with him. :)

There's a lot of truth to these scenarios. I've known some psychiatrists and therapists who were completely nuts. One, a famous Boston MD shrink, treated my aunt. He was bananas. While talking to my aunt, who was in bed after a car crash, he spied the hot dog lunch on her tray on the side table, and while talking to her, absent-mindedly picked up the dog, squeezed it completely out of the bun, and set it back on the plate, and then left. She couldn't believe it. Then there was an ex friend of mine who was counseling adult victims of childhood sexual abuse. Turned out she liked little pre-pubescent girls, and was using her clients' abuse stories to masturbate at home. Then there was the MD shrink who treated my brother. When my bro had a breakdown and told the shrink he wanted to kill himself, the shrink told him he just needed to work more hours bagging groceries at his job. I had to take him myself to the ER for admittance. The admitting nurse shook her head when I told her what the MD said. Then there's the retired MD shrink here in my hood who has never talked to anybody and never, ever miles. He's an amoeba. It looks like some form of autism. And these guys are all let loose on an innocent, vulnerable population. Give me a Sean McGuire anytime - if you can find one.

I've always loved this scenes, and they're hilarious, but what ruins them is the fact that no therapist would allow a second party to sit in on their session even i he is Willl's legal guardian or whatever. Least of which all let his assistant to sit in other sessions. Also the one shrink is George Plimpton. Good cameo performance. Also @dankane90 3 years ago "A difficult theorem can be like a.. symphony. it's very erotic.. " LOL i've never caught that" I know, I love how Skarsgard's character can be such a lech whenever a young woman is around. Like when he asks his student out for drinks at the MIT reunion.

The professor gets a bad rap in this movie, but he was the one who first saw talent in Will. He bailed him out of the courthouse and set up the work release for him. Will also would have never met Sean and might never had the help he needed to break him out of his "safe" life in the city.

Will was afraid that if he became just like Gerry, an obsessive mathematical egghead, he wouldn't get laid anymore.......except maybe by a hooker. Will wanted to be cool and tough more than he wanted to be a scarf-wearing, Perrier-drinking brainiac.

He also offers to have a drink with another student while at the reunion, she politely declines as only interested in who solved the maths problem.

3:04 I could never understand this, and I still cannot. Why would not only his teacher, but even the assistant be present at his hypnosis / psychoanalysis session? What is he supposed to do there? Is that how it's done in the US? I've never been a subject of anything like this, but I imagine the idea is that it's supposed to be private, and you normally don't get your boss, family, friends, whoever, to sit around and watch

Well I think it's a waste of his time too now he's going to have trust issues someone should have helped him years ago when the abuse was happening talking about it now won't change the past. He gets arrested for a street fight but were his parents or foster parents arrested for abusing him? They only care because he's a genius too not that his talent really matters he has no real interest in pursuing it he only trusts a few guys he grew up with and they are going to reject him too he can't have an intimate relationship with the girl either because he has trust issues and true love cannot exist without trust.

In the end, Robin Williams's character Sean was the only one who could get through to Matt Damon's character Will more than those idiot therapists. And Sean was like more like a father to Will than any man was.

As a Psych major i can tell you psychology as a discipline is totally legitimate. It just gets tricky when it goes into practice. It really depends on the individual's luck/trial & error to come across the "right"psychologist.Psychologist like people are vastly different.Diff psychologists take different approaches and it depends on their own experience & knowledge how much they can relate to your case and if they have the right approach and tools to help you. It's more complicated than u think.

if he saw a psychiatrist, the psychiatrist would talk to him for like 20 minutes, then give him an overly simplistic label. the psychiatrist would then prescribe medication, regardless of what Will said in the session.
