I get genuinely annoyed thinking about stuff like the activator and power glove. They barely worked and didn’t even have software that used them in a functional manner. At least the super scope and menacer worked with their pack in games and a couple of other titles.

I'm 40 years old from the UK and I had this magazine. I recognised the cover as soon as I saw it. As for those review scores... Yeh that was a wierd thing with mags back in the 90's, good games generally scored 85+, Half decent games were 75+ anything under that was mediocre. Strange way to use the numbers.

Hey there! Yours is easily my favorite retro gaming channel. Really love the solid content and journalistic approach. I know you get a lot of opinions on this, so I'm going to throw in my two cents, one of the first thing I noticed was that you actually stop and talk about the sports games. Now, when I was a kid, my friends and I honestly just looked straight past most of them, they weren't even on our radar, and my thought was always "who actually plays these?!" That being said, I actually really enjoy your take on retro sports games because I always get a glimpse into a whole, giant subsection of retro gaming that I don't even have the slightest clue about. Who knew that there was one baseball game on the NES with a contract to use players names, and a different one licensed to use team names? I sure didn't, but I do now! I also come away with a better idea for what makes one baseball game better than another, because before they all looked the same to me. For most of this stuff, I'm just reliving the past out of nostalgia, but when you talk sports, I actually come away having learned something. What makes your channel unique is that you tend to take a deep dive on a topic with a mixture of researched facts and your own personal and unique perspective. That's what makes the CGQ so great, so keep it up!

If you go back and watch TMNT, I was surprised to notice in all 8 seasons... I only saw Michelangelo use nun-chucks in a small handful of episodes. 99% of the time he uses a grappling hook. They must have not used nun-chucks on purpose globally to sensor for the UK. He has them in the intros... but in the actual episodes he barely ever uses them.

kim justice explains the nunchaku censorship in one of her vids.. i'll summarize: there was a high-ranking lawmaker (whatever they are called in britain) who didn't like the portrayal of nunchaku in movies, he banned them up until the time he died/resigned (mid 2000s) the restrictions were lifted right after he died

I would like to point out that violent games were certainly as popular in the UK as in the US, and the violent content was never a reason to not release a game in the UK - it had more to do with sales, since they'd only release games that had a chance of making their investment back. Really the first time I recall that video game violence resulted in a different experience in the UK was Carmageddon. Also, the nunchuck situation was even worse than you think: they were a banned weapon and couldn't be shown ANYWHERE, which meant that martial arts films, most notably Enter The Dragon, had to be edited to remove the nunchucks. I remember being quite excited to get a Region 1 import of ETD so that I could see it as it was meant to be seen at last. Enjoyed the video!

Fantastic video as usual. Thanks for this it really helps to lift the gloom a lot. I didn’t have a mega drive at this time I had moved from an NES to SNES (I had that Street fighter bundle that was the giveaway on page 2) in 92 but my friend next door had a mega drive from 91. My local video game/newsagent here in the UK (still around doesn’t sell games now tho) called Cannings used to get imports and I remember seeing Splatterhouse 3 in there thinking I wish I had a mega drive as that cover was awesome. Deffo a typo on the price of the games in the mag. SNES games were even more expensive usually they were £59.99 so rental was king. I often wished I’d asked for a mega drive for Christmas due to the lower price of the games but Street Fighter was a huge draw as an exclusive. The import scene was great tho as I rented Star Fox (they rented you the converter no extra cost) well before it’s UK release. Here in the UK the Turtles film was called Ninja still and a discount shop near me imported US action figures with the word Ninja on them so the censorship was not only strange but pretty pointless as we knew they were ninja’s anyway. The 0891 numbers all seemed to be 39p a minute which was a lot at the time. Anyway sorry for the long comment just really enjoyed the video

@@sloppynyuszi Not just the headphone jack, but native stereo audio output ENTIRELY. (The only way to get proper two-channel stereo audio out of the MD/Genesis w/o mods is via the OG model's headphone jack). The other major difference is its use of an ever so slightly different Yamaha FM Synthesis chip for audio processing. This meant that the sound output/profile of both models were actually quite different (most people definitely prefer the OG model's chip, but that's not 100% universal. Most esp. for those who grew up w/ a model 2).

Actually intel did not need emulation because pre potato cpu where basically generic IBM cpu kinda like power pc but alot more simple with no hybrid arm teckolodgy however arm was very much a thing yet microsoft and intel had control of the bussiness enterprise market but for a very short time intel was open to linux so the sega pc was a thing that is very rare and most people who cliam to have a sega pc are just faking it with a modified potato pc that has free dos that can read sega carts via a sega geniuses insided the pc and they basicly have a video signal switch with scart to vga.

Great read-through. Wow, that magazine's entire layout is shamelessly ripped off from Future's magazines like Super Play... Just put them side-by-side if you have an issue of SP. About UK censorship history, there's a succinct article on Tedium that you can find with a search for "Tedium James Ferman"

Until recent times the sight or mention in the media or possession of nunchaku in the UK and Hong Kong was illegal and sales banned. However in mainland China is legal to own and possess nunchaku. In the Bruce Lee movie Enter the Dragon, the nunchaku scenes where cut leaving a gap in until the BBFC passed it in 2000. I will let you draw your own conclusions and answers to this argument of imperial proportions. I have a pair and have been practicing for nearly 10 years. You tend to only bonk yourself on the head once...
