This manually manipulated machine counterbalances a payload and counterweights to achieve a positioning envelope 5 meters in diameter, 2 meters down and 2 meters up that can be moved with a touch of the finger.

If gravity powered the auger with an oversized grandfather clock mechanism, tree trunk axels for portability and weight to allow for a spring torsion arm instead of the counterweights, and a couple of oxen. That there would be a da Vinci punk machine.

wha? I dont get it. Why use a machine 5 times the size of the machine its lifting? Plus at least with Augers it may be a little heavy but you want the weight to push downward....right?

Also would you use a forklift that was the same size and couldn't lift anything above itself? How about a crane? Did you see how high that thing went? Could you hold that thing that high up and still work? "Plus at least with Augers it may be a little heavy but you want the weight to push downward....right?" NOOOOO! It's not the weight pushing down that makes it work it's the bit itself that is drilling down. Some weight helps but also works against you more. Trying pulling that heavy auger out with dirt now filling up the bit. See if you like that weight then. Weight is not the big thing when using augers. Just watch this video. That machine has the engine and hydraulic pump in the opposite end and used as counterweight.
