The Carl Urban version needs to be an HBO show. The Dredd Lore is so under rated. It's utterly fascinating.

I always considered the Urban movie being the early days of Dredd and MegaCity one. Dredd's name isn't infamous enough for gangs to know it and MC1 still has many of it's buildings topside. If there was a sequel, I could see a decade lone timelapse of most of the buildings being literally built over by new ones and the look being closer to the sci-fi the Stallone movie had.

Maybe, but I like the look of the 2012 megacity. It doesn't look like a future city, it looks like it's going through extreme urban decay with all the buildings getting older 🤔

Urban’s Dredd is a young Dredd. Dredd in the comics now aged along with the comics. He’s 90 now. The rejuve tank keeps him a youthful 60 😂 so yeah, I see the film MC1 as the beginning.

It's true; when you consider the Batman films from the nineties it's surprising how dirty they managed to keep Dredd. I didn't mind the helmet coming off; everyone knew what Stallone looked like anyway but I don't know Karl Urban's other work so was glad he kept it on. Stallones' was probably too ambitious, trying to fit fifteen years of stories into ninety minutes, but as a seventies 2000AD reader I love both films and am excited about the TV show.

I don't get why the hall of justice still bothers to try and uphold the law. I have not read the comics but in the 2012 movie it's stated that the judges can only respond to about 5% of all reported crime. That's not government, that's a lost cause. In reality the most ruthless crime-boss would take over and not just because he could scare the populace into obedience but because he could attain their cooperation by providing them actual protection. The Hall of Justice would either have to compromise on its ideals and extort obedience and resources like common thugs just so it can maintain enough power and influence to keep crime-bosses and warlords at bay, or be renegaded to an irrelevant bastion of idealists playing a minor role on the margins of a city-wide warzone where numerous factions fight for power. The movie made a point of showing that most people either don't care for the hall of justice or are press-ganged into fighting it, but in reality there would be mega-blocks where the citizens actively fight back against the judges simply because they would rather live under thugs who can ensure protection and stability than a government that promises to maybe help out around 5% of the time.
@cybertonto72
@cybertonto72 7 жыл бұрын
I think it just explained the film.... 5% of reported crimes in a city where almost anything is a crime is a lot to handle, don't forget there is a lot of stuff like smoking and eating sugar that are crimes to simple jimping and jay walking that get reported. Plus the need for people to feel like they are needed/important so they report any and every crime they see.

@GeahkBurchill
@GeahkBurchill 7 жыл бұрын
I always felt the tone of the Stallone film and the city were largely correct but the character was totally off. Carl Urban was perfectly Dredd and the grittiness was perfect but the city was far less alive and involved. People forget that Dredd is satire and, while people complained about Stallone meeting Hershey at the corner of "Abbot and Costello" that was perfectly in keeping with the comic. Obviously, I far prefer the 2012 Urban version but 1995 Stallone had it's real strong merits. The Angel gang, The Cursed Earth. Mean Machine and the ABC warrior. It nailed those perfectly. For me, the 2012 Dredd would be perfect with just a little more eccentricity and weirdness. The city was too formal and regimented. I know the director wanted the Conapts to look like tombstones--and that was great, but it also lead to them being too samey.
@Wolf10media

They did mentioned mutants with arms so who's to say that movie didn't already have that weirdness. Maybe the series will explore that concept later down the road. Here's to hoping. -Raises Drink-

Karl Urban has been a fan of Judge Dredd since he was young, so for him its something he has always wanted to take part in. Stallone didn't actually like the character, and thats why they made him more of a hero type character, than how Dredd actually is in the comic.

Carl Urban's Judge Dredd was the closest though Stallone's city looked epic. I have been a fan of 2000AD for roughly 30 years (since I was a pre-teen) and I welcome a TV series. I'd like Dredd to be present in every episode but not necessarily the main character. He can be a catalyst at the start of an episode to kick things off or a conclusion of an episode to wrap the story up. I don't need to see him in every scene but I'd like to see him in every episode. Occasionally I'd like a story arc that'll run over three or four episodes; like the America Jara story
@Rekaert
@Rekaert 7 жыл бұрын
First ten to fifteen minutes of Stallone's Dredd I quite enjoy. Then the helmet comes off, and five minutes later I'm watching "just another Stallone action flick". I forget it's about Dredd much at all. It's surprising what difference that helmet makes. There were other things, like the Hershey kiss, emo-Dredd and the cringe worthy "Double-Whammy" that just ruin it too much for me. If I ignore that it's about Dredd, I can watch it as a popcorn flick, but there's only so much of Schneider gooning about that I can take. That, and I'll always remember the hover-Ferrari that blows up to reveal a tube-frame covered by a mock car housing. How that survived the edit process I'll never know. Urban's Dredd was very, very close to the character, but lacked the budget to get the visuals where they needed to be. MC1 looks still very much contemporary. But, there were some design choices too that jarred. Turning the Lawmaster into a forward sitting crotch-rocket was a mistake, the helmet was too bucket-like and if I never see another 3D film again in my life it will be too soon. Even they couldn't stop messing about with the Lawgiver ammunition. Hotshot? Since when is it some sort of flare round? Some perfectly good ammunition choices in the lore, but each film decides to go reinventing the wheel instead of using established articles. Ultimately, I think you're correct. A careful combination of the two could hit the sweet-spot between gritty realism, and a more faithful adaptation. Hopefully we haven't seen the last of Dredd on the screen.

Thanks for so many great vids Mr. H. You're really into so many things that I love - Judge Dredd, HP Lovecraft, the Thing, Alien.. name it. Since I was nine or ten, I'm obsessed with the Judge Dredd comics. Every time I read about a construction project or travel through a large city, I think "yeah, MegaCity One". I love that special dark brutal humour in the comics! Currently reading the Secret Files, No. 5. Even though I really like the Judge Dreed character, the real main character in the comics is the city itself and its crazed future shocked inhabitants. None of the movies has really managed to catch that special feeling of claustrophobia, greatness and insanity.

I could literally write an essay on the subject. After reading through the comics, watching the movies, and games I have a good understanding of the universe. The original film tried to play as close to the comics as possible. While, the (2012) adaptation tried to make the universe as believable as possible. There is a distinct sense in the comics that the level of technology is almost fantastical (i.e. Warhammer 40k). There is also a very clear focus on culture and morality (or philosophy). The fantastical elements of the story are well represented in the original film. While the moral quandary is more clearly expressed in the modern (2012) adaptation. They both do a terrific job of capturing the unique universe that is Judge Dredd. As a big fan of the comics I do prefer the original Stallone movie. The presence of the psychic in the 2012 film is very important, something left out of the original movie. However, the original movie shows a great deal more of the detail that make the Dredd universe come alive (government politics, angel gang, wasteland life, post-war weapons, and on and on) whereas the the 2012 films sneaks these details in.

I'd concur about the depictions to a point. Stallone's version captured the claustrophobia and fantastic apsects of the city, but failed to capture the realities and grittiness. Urban's version captured the grit and "life in Mega City One" feel, but was missing that level of scifi fantasy and desparate closeness. Over all, Urban's was better, but yes, a combination would be perfect.

There has been several occasions in the comic where Dredd isn't wearing his helmet. One such story shows Dredd having a bath in his Rowdy Yates apartment block. It involves 2 thieves attempting to break & enter. A very humouristic story, naturally the thieves regret trying to burgle Judge Dredd's flat.

Karl Urban idea of Mega City hit the idea correctly, with the remnants of what's left of today's world. Also, with society run amok. That cold mysterious touch of Dredd is a spot on. But I will raise an issue... with Rookie Judge Anderson, that, being the if she was to wear a helmet they should follow the comic book in stead of red and black, the rookie Helmet was white.

Karl Urban got the right tone, plus kept his face covered as Dredd should be portrayed. It would have been nice to have seen some more parts of the city though. The Stallone film had its good points, for me the depiction of the Angel gang was very good and the design of the ABC warrior Hammerstein looked very good. As Mr H says a combination of both films would be very close to perfect.

Urban playing Dredd with Stallones budget/backdrop using original lawmasters fighting the Dark Judges with Anderson helping out. Keep the original helmet cross, bring back the full eagle shoulder pad & use Mean Machine again. Throw in some Umpty a Rodentine leak & a lot of Cam Kennedy inspiration for me.

The Stallone film is very frustrating, the first 15 minutes are fantastic, and it has moments straight from the comic which are great, if only the helmet had stayed on and it had not turned into just another action film, but there is no denying the look of Mega City one is really well done

The Urban version was most realistic which matters most for the believability an wasn't the type however for the futuristic Stallone make of yesteryear. So in short a series and/or sequal mixing of both would do the franchise good. A separate series of whole new characters of course delving into how Megacity 1 and it's Justice Department an post apocalypse universe came to be would be great to see. No one seems to have that for ANY of the great SciFi franchises. the closest we got is the Star Trek, Stargate and now The Alien franchises.

I think the Stallone movie got the look right, and the Urban movie captured the feel. The Dredd-verse is a bit like the Dune series. It's so fleshed out in written form it should translate easily to the screen. That's not the case though. Where does any movie or TV show start? There's massive amounts of self contained stories, yet most of them rely on previous stories to a greater or lesser extent. I'd love to see some new stories, Dredd adventuring through Meg 1 in story lines not found in comics. Anyway, thanks for the video, I've loved Dredd since the late 80s.

The Mega City One of the Stallone movie was reminiscent of that featured in 2000AD. Whilst the Joe Dredd depicted by Stallone was completely off the mark, the ABC warrior & the Angel Gang (especially Mean Machine) & the opening Block Wars scene were enjoyable, if somewhat short lived additions. Urban's depiction of Dredd was flawless, and the only one to do it justice. However - the Lawmaster that he is seen riding at the start didn't live up to my expectations. I felt a Harley Davidson would have been the perfect bike to base the Lawmaster upon. I agree that a blend of Stallone's MC1 with Urban's Dredd would have lifted the comic strip straight off the pages. A Block Wars story would have worked well especially if woven through the Mama Clan story. Much as I love the Four Dark Judges; I feel that it would be too much of a leap in any initial Dredd movies.

Though it deviated more from the style of the comics, I thought Urban's aesthetic version of Dredd made practical sense. I'm almost always a fan of moving things towards a more modern and practical style, even if it conflicts with the source material. Moving forward, the bulky shoulder adornments, chains and lack of body armor could be the judges formal attire, while the tactical body armor style could be their street uniform. It would also be cool if over the course of the show, we see Dredd get updates to his armor and arsenal, like pieces of power armor and more advanced weapons and tools. Kind of like how you would level up and obtain new items in a video game.

Though many lambast the Sylvester Stallone version of ‘Judge Dredd’ the : “I AM THE LAWL!” Has to be part of the Judge Dredd lexicon from now on that shout is just is too good to pass up in any future iterations of Judge Dredd. Maybe have one of the other judges keep saying it that way instead maybe. Make it a lawl.
