On July 13-14, 2020, a severe storm passed over the South African coast, causing bad weather in Algoa Bay. The wave height measured in Algoa Bay was approximately 3.5 m, ”SAMSA said in a statement.
"At 11:37 p.m. on July 14, 2020, a report was received from Port Control that MSC Palak had lost containers overboard while at anchor."
SAMSA also said that the Port of Ngqura was closed to vessel traffic due to the risk that some containers may have sunk in the approach channel, becoming a danger to navigation. The authority is working with the owner of the vessel to ensure that all containers are recovered.
“The owners organized an aerial surveillance flight to locate any drifting containers that could pose a danger to shipping. SAMSA asks the public to remain alert and report any container sighted to SAMSA, ”said the authority.
