SMT, just stumbled on your unboxing video and can't help but notice some of the units being unboxed. The "Athearn" unit at the 1:15 mark is an older Stewart Baldwin AS616 road switcher. At the 1:57 mark, you had it right: that's an E7. Differences were the exhaust (4 stacks on the roof), side windows (square windows arranged in pairs vs the E8s 4 portholes) and grille locations (E8s sported one long grille stretching from beyond cab door to rear of unit). At 3:34, that's a proto 2000 E8. As mentioned elsewhere, the pilots were a separate part for ease of maintenance and interchangeability. I think they had 3 different pilot designs offered. If you really want to get those E8s running, I'd replace those Proto wheels with newer Proto replacement wheels.

5:26 BL2 ( Branch Line 1500 horsepower ) Identical internally to the EMD F3 but with a different carbody. The BL2 was too late ( 1948 ) to make inroads as a branch line diesel. That market went to Alco with the Alco S1 S2 S3 S4 series of end cab diesels and the Alco RS1. Not to mention the many SW1 NW2 and Baldwin VO1000 diesels running around and it explains why only a grand total of 59 BL2s were ever built. EMD did use the BL2 as a stepping stone for the EMD GP7.

Nice locomotives Harrison! The Proto 2000 E units have removable pilots, hence the reason they're not attached to the locomotives. They just simply slide into place and they should stay, but a tiny drop of CA wouldn't hurt. These locomotives also have doors for the front coupler which can be moved inward and outward via the mounting holes, but honestly, I'd just leave the doors off the front pilots, they are an absolute pain to keep them attached, I had to do that with my Frisco E8 because they kept falling off!
@garysprandel1817
@garysprandel1817 Жыл бұрын
IIRC a lot of roads eventually removed the coupler doors because it was mainly an esthetic device anyway.
@randallellison6421
@randallellison6421 Жыл бұрын
@@garysprandel1817 yeah, virtually every photo of Frisco's E units had the front coupler exposed. Plus I'd imagine it made things easier and quicker when the locomotive needed to be switched out or another unit being added to the point because they wouldn't have to go through the process of opening the access doors and bringing the coupler out.

The pilots on the Proto 2000 E8s are removable, and they are not broken. When the E8s are packaged in box, the pilots are removed, and the shell is separated from the drive. As far as the F units, they could be Stewart or Intermountain. The two 6 axle road switchers (C&O 5539, 5568 - Baldwin AS-616) should be made by Stewart. Also, your E7A is made by Con-Cor. I though these were made by Model Power, but they don't have the mounting screw on the top in which was changed when Con-Cor started to import them from Roco.

Hello Harrison! My 5 year old (who was almost named Harrison) has been watching train videos since he was 18 months old. He has autism and ADHD and refers to your videos as “I wanna watch “hello folks, in todays video”” and he even says it like you. He was watching a video this morning and was saying “mommy!!! We have a runner”. He also is learning the names of trains, i.e. Bachman, Lionel, etc. Thank you so much for the content and know it’s helping future train enthusiasts (and their moms) to learn about the trade. ❤

BL2 was in the first runs of Proto 2000 equipment. As such they had better detail and drives than earlier Life-Like locomotives, but hadn't switched to nickel-silver wheels. Edit:. The red light is strictly for reversing movements by the locomotive. Some passenger stations require reversing into them and per FRA regulations the rear of a train must display a red marker.

The first gen P2K loco's had brass wheels, with black coating to protect from corrosion. You can probably still get replacement wheel sets from Walther's, and they will be the Nickel wheels. One thing to be careful of, ALL the P2K E units have floating bearing caps on the outside of the truck side frames, which are bad for popping off and getting lost.

Your first engine, the Con-Cor, is the old Revell shell with a Kato drive. #2, Stewart AS-616 (Baldwin), Athearn drive components #3 these are well known for the axle gear splitting, brass wheels may indicate it's been repaired at least once. Also possible it's been run a lot and the blackening is worn entirely off the wheels #4 yes Roco made these, they were sold initially by Model Power and later by Con-Cor #5 same as #2 #6 the F-unit is a Stewart using Kato drive #7 same. Stewart initially produced engines using Athearn drive parts, later upgraded to Kato, then to their own clones of Kato. Eventually Stewart sold out to Bowser who makes these engines today. #8 Proto E-units the pilot slides on and off the frame. Should slide right back on, may need to lift the shell a bit. Diaphragm on the first one should also snap back into place Red light on the Proto E-8s simulates a Mars type warning light which was used by a number of roads.

The red light is a mars light a non mandatory light that railways put in for the safety of pedestrians and cars and such as it was bright and easy to see and it helped people see a train in the fog and trains had them at both ends back then as diesels were still a relatively new thing railways buying them as steam was used for a while before railways made the full switch apon realizing diesels were cheaper the reason for the light at the front was for running in both directions as people were used to seeing a big cloud of smoke steam coming from a steam locomotive and weren’t used to diesels yet

The BL2 may not have had a split gear, ya had the front truck off the rails when tested - also theres a stray coupler hanging off one of the E unit trucks

Do CN next! Do CN next! That’s very cool. Quite the fleet. Soon you’ll have a locomotive to represent each subscriber you have. Did I already make that joke? Surely you have over 75,000 locomotives by now. 😊

Hi Harrison. Thanks for your help and inspiration. I would like to find a controler with gauges like yours. I appreciate your help. Thanks. So I did a bit more looking on your site and found the information. Trust me I am more analog than digital. I have the Mrc tech 3 9500 on the way. Thanks again

Hey SMT, I am newer to restoring locos, and I have a TYCO loco that is riveted, any ideas on how to un-rivet it?
