fun fact, those hacks also remove (most?) noticeable lag present in the original games

And more fun fact, that MM1 still more laggy than MM2, even while MM2 does pcm playback. For MM1 I optimized several routines, but in general seems engine is too bad. For MM2 v1.1 I optimized code only in two locations, but in v1.2 added a bit more, afair something for sprites, to compensate for CPU load during PCM playback.

Apparently it's not possible with 3 due to issues bringing it over to VRC6. There is a MMC5 version though that can have music added to it, so I might try retooling my tracks to work with that, though losing a channel and timbres does suck.

while this is obviously true, it's also true you have to modify assembly regarding controller inputs if you use DPCM, cause of its wacky implementation. nothing that can't be done, but has be taken care of nonetheless.

Note that I'm actually talking about 7-bit PCM and not DPCM in this case. Most games that had samples used DPCM with a few exceptions, and pretty much all of those have to halt CPU activity to do it.

@@RushJet1 could you elaborate a bit on the difference between 1-Bit DPCM vs. 7-Bit PCM and how they are handled? Information on this topic is a bit sparse. How would i go about using PCM in Famitracker and in an actual ROM? It's not as simple as using the DPCM channel and telling it to use 7-Bit PCM instead i'd assume, but some other shenanigans to make that work.

@@musicgardener2142 you can't really do PCM in FamiTracker but you can in Furnace. This was romhacked in after the fact and I had to come up with higher quality versions of the samples and and convert the samples with Ti's help.
