The problem with the Mega Drive soundchips, is because GEMS overshadows everything that the YM2612 has to offer. And it really leads people to misinformation and biased comparisons (like the one which AVGN/James Rolfe did using GEMS-based soundtracks and JRPG soundtracks from the Super Famicom). Aside from maybe Sonic Spinball, I don't know any game with a good GEMS Soundtrack; yet still the YM2612 has Sonic, Shinobi 3, Gunstar Heroes, Thunder Force, Streets of Rage...

I also was part of Brazil's biggest Mega Drive fansite, "comunidade mega drive" (Mega Drive community), which explained in rich detail, a lot of things in regards to the console. The YM2612 is a soundchip manufactured by Yamaha, it was used by Sega in the Mega Drive, several arcade games and Fujitsu FM computers. You can search for YM2612 here on youtube, I'm sure it's going to give you a lot of inspirations on your artistic endeavors.
