This is my favorite Mega Man ending theme, I like Mega Man 3's ending as a character theme for Proto Man, but I find this one to fit it's game's ending respectfully.

Protoman's Whistle is without a doubt the best of them, but I like this ending sequence uniquely. It reflects on Mega Man's dilemma. He had the chance to kill Wily, but couldn't do it in time, so now Wily has gotten away, and will likely come back to haunt him. The scene of Mega Man walking away from the burning skull castle is pretty much him reflecting that he'll have to fight Wily again, and again forever in a never ending cycle. That makes it so much more epic.

Behold, my reactions when I saw the ending for the first time!: (Wily tries to apologize to Mega Man): Me: Don't you always do that? (Mega Man tries to shoot Wily.) WHOA! WHOA! WHOA! WHAT!? (Wily tries to stop him from shooting by pointing out the three rules of robotics, Mega Man still tries to shoot him.) Like I'll fall for that one! (Treble appears and transports Wily out, and Bass appears shortly after.) Aww, Come on! ('He who hesitates is Lost') He has a point there, Rock. (The castle blows up and goes into flames) WOAH! AND THE CASTLE WAS FRICKING EXPLODING! (Robot Master Cast: Random reactions) (A comet streaks across the sky while Bass is looking on from a cliffside.) Mega Man 8? Mega Man 8! (Mega Man returning home and Auto snapping a picture.) Awww...... So sweet.....

Meh, I really don't like that scene anyway. The problem with it is that it created a serious misconsepted plothole in regards to classic & X. Only a reploid mind is suppoest to be able to process complex consepts like killing for the greater good. That's why Megaman withdrew his attack in scilence in the original translation. With having Megaman make that decision without hesitation, it just left the most of us scratching our heads wondering just what the hell is so special about reploids.

While the American translation did mix things up a good bit by adding that incoherent line, it actually has some canon basis. Mega Man is freer than most of his peers, and has emotions. He is actually angry at Wily and trusts him less and less over time. I don't think he quite "withdrew his attack in silence", but rather his arm came down by itself, restrained by the First Law ingrained in his programming. Besides, Proto Man was a reploid by the strict definition of "free-willed robots with human-like complexity of thought", far before the times of X, as Dr. Light's very first creation ; for that reason, he wasn't given weapons, and when Wily did give them to him, he worked by his side out of loyalty. Light basically knew for a fact that Proto Man's freedom was a mistake, and that's the whole reason behind the restraints of Mega Man and the others, as well as behind X's capsule.
