Nah, I can say that with confidence, and I've grown up with the NES games. It's not a bad game, but it ranks lower among most of the games in the series. I get that some here have grown up with PS1 and probably have a soft spot for it, but I can't just ignore the dip in design. I give it props for amazing animation and its BGM. 8 ranks pretty high in my favorite Megaman games. I just have too much nostalgia for it since it was my introduction to the classic series. The overall presentation is just amazing and such a delight to the ears. The game is definitely at it's the best when it comes to the last 4 robot masters.

It's interesting, most people are nostalgic for the other games, and mm8 is so different that is harshes their nostalgic buzz. That's a cool perspective that you're nostalgic about 8. Mega Man 8 is my absolute favorite game in the series, and it's a top 5 game overall for me. I grew up with the Anniversary Collection and I loved playing every single game, and 8 was my favorite and the one I went back to the most in my childhood. I have distinct memories of watching the intro cutscene where it shows the montage of Mega Man fighting many of the robot masters from the previous games with that epic anime art style and music, and watching my older cousin playing the game, fighting Duo. It can't be overstated how much joy this game brings me, even if it wasn't the first Mega Man game I decided to play out of the bunch. It's colorful, has great music, beautifully animated cutscenes, and is just a blast to play every time, even if it is arguably the easiest game in the series.
@mistermastermind528 Жыл бұрын
For better voice acting, Rockman 8 is better. If only it was subbed, then it would've been a lot more accessible. I played through Rockman 8 without a memory card and mastered all the levels (except the Wily ones, I guess). I also had to guess through menu navigation especially buying your power-ups. The rockball is kind of a cheat because you can use it for jumps while on the air. The timing needs to be mastered though but in my case, since my X button was pressing by itself, MegaMan automatically just jumps on the ball. It is my first MegaMan game that I got to play through myself (I only got to watch others play the earlier ones). I definitely have a soft spot for it. Then I played MegaMan 3 and was shocked at how far the gameplay was. So yeah, I do agree that 8 is slow but like how I tried to adapt to the earlier ones, you just have to adapt to the tempo of the game, I guess.

I feel the same way. This game is full of detail and the attempt to constantly wow the player with new ideas and technical showcases is admirable on paper, but the end result ends up being cool to look at, but not that fun to play. However I'm glad they had the opportunity to make those mistakes with this title, because the director of megaman 11 claimed that thanks to 8's approach to its design he's learned that style shouldn't take priority over the gameplay. So, hats off to capcom for learning from their mistakes and making better games with experience

I didn't know that about Mega Man 11. Good for them for figuring it out! I guess all is well that ends well. I feel like a little more play testing and design time could've saved this game. I like Mega Man 8 well enough as something you play through for being part of the series and if it wasn't a Mega Man game, it could've been an OK platformer. For me, I consider it to be the "black sheep" of the series. That oddball game that's there that just doesn't jive with the rest of the series. It's like Mega Man 8 is to the classic series as Zelda 2: The Adventures of Link is to the Zelda series. It's that one game in the series where, while still fun, is where they went odd places. I also liked the level of detail in the stages and appreciated the risks they took even though it never panned out. Though I think they made it rain mets with dozens of them for you to shoot just to say they didn't have the old number of sprites on screen limit anymore. That with all the toys and other moving things on screen, I think they were overcompensating for the lack of sprites they could have on screen before and it felt too "busy" for me. I think the shortcomings of the bad voice acting combined with really annoying level mechanics (jump jump slide slide) make this game one plays just to cross off the list for plaything through the series. The OK platformer that you play once, have a decent time with it, and then almost never go back to it. Lore wise, this game is pretty important with the evil energy in it, but it's pretty clear that Capcom didn't put the same effort into the lore for this game that they put into the Breath of Fire games. I didn't like the power ball. It was like they were saying, "Remember that soccer game we made? We have a ball you can kick." It was lame. I almost never used it. I did like the soccer game, but never liked the power ball. I also didn't like the Rush abilities either. They just didn't feel right to me compared to how much fun they were in the previous games. I liked the shooter stages a lot. They were out of place here, but I feel like if they expanded on that idea they could've done a lot more with it and maybe even do a spin-off game with it that is a regular shooter that could switch between flying with Rush Jet and maybe some underwater levels with Rush Marine. Opportunity wasted there as they could've gone some really cool places with robot masters and stages for such a game. With Bass and Treble they could've done two player co-op, two ways to play with different abilities, or have you do an aerial battle with him and you still could've gotten weapons to use from bosses.
@MeguhFan Жыл бұрын
I'm basically on the same page as you. I've never played the soccer game, but you're the first person I've ever heard say anything good about it. I love the idea of a Mega Man shmup, but I feel like it's just too easy and slow here. Capcom collaborated with Cave to release ProGear in 2001. I wish they had done something like this for a Mega Man shmup. If you like shmups, Pro Gear is only $1 or $2 for Capcom Arcade Stadium.

I want to like this game but the Jetboard levels ruin it for me. I’ve beaten the hardest classic Megaman games many times (9, Megaman & Bass, Dr Wily’s Revenge, etc) but I’ve never been able to finish 8 because of those auto scrollers. Even if you beat that part, you also have to fight that awful boss, and unlike the easy as hell robot masters, if you game over YOU HAVE TO DO THE JETBOARD SECTION AGAIN! Some say the Anniversary collection ruined the controls, but I played the Japanese Saturn version and it’s just as bad. Not to mention, most of the level design is too gimmicky and just repeats the same enemies over and over again. It’s sad that my favorite levels (Swordman and Grenademan) also have annoying moments. The weapons aren’t very interesting either; Grenade man’s weapon is super OP, and swordsman’s weapon is fun, however the rest are nothing special. One day in the future, I would love to see Capcom try to make a better game with this colorful anime artstyle, but for now, I guess I’ll just stick with Megaman X4.

Mega Man 8 is a game that forgot what Mega Man feels like. Not a single stage in the game besides Grenade Man's stage and Wily 3 feels like Mega Man. They all have over the top gimmicks and puzzle element which does not belong in Mega Man. The stages themselves lack enemy diversity. The same 5 or 6 enemies repeat over and over again. The weapon balance is terrible for that reason because there aren't a lot enemies you can try weapons on. There are a few positive things here and there. Bosses in this game are good and the music is great. Neither of this is saying a lot Mega Man that has to be expected with Mega Man 8. It is still not a terrible game, just a game that made some big mistakes. I would say play Mega Man 8 if you want to but absolutely avoid it if you get easily offended (Looking at you Nico Thulin) . 3.8 /10 Edit: I will not be commenting on Bosses this time. Out of all mainline games, I have my experience on Mega Man 8 the least. I have only played this game start to finish less that 10 times.

Personally, I think it's better than Mega Man 4, 5, 6, and 2 even though I grew up with 2. The weapons are creative, the bosses are fun, the animation is fluent and great, and I love story and cutscenes. I don't really have that many issues with the game besides Wily Tower 1, and yes, they called the wily castle the Wily Tower like in Mega Man: The Wily Wars. I think people really underestimate this game when it comes to both classic MM and MM in general, which gives this game a bad look in the series.
