Lots of practice. And good amount of observations on boss enemy's attack pattern; once you got the grasp of it, dodging and return fire should be pretty natural. Even then, some can be quite overwhelming indeed.

That final boss has to be one of the greatest feats in ROMhacking history. To be able to not only make a *functioning* Yoshi's Island final boss on NES, but in the MEGAMAN engine, is so surreal. This hack is such a trip, in all the best ways.

I believe what is probably happening is that notice the background is changing around Dr. Light? Dr. Light is a BACKGROUND layer. Also the palette for the tiles are... 3 colors? The two background tiles are using white, and gray. Also extensive use of mirroring. As pay attention Dr Light's Nose. :) So the parralax scrolling on top is also the same pallete as the floor tiles.
