I love the fact that the dialogue is written so you can hear the steadfast demeanor in the two... but at the same time, you can tell they really, REALLY do not want this fight to end in a fatality. They're both trying to jump on a grenade for the sake of the other, but are too stubborn and worn down by the trauma of their fight to trust the other can handle it.

That second verse really showed it too. X being worried for zero's safety because of the virus that should be killing them is making him stronger, no one knows why, and he's afraid his friend is being corrupted without him even being aware. For zero it's the virus is obviously awakening his maverick side but he's still thinking of his responsibility. The virus that would kill anyone else is making him stronger rather than weaker, strong enough to end this conflict on his own without risking his best friend's life. Neither want the other to risk their lives but neither are willing to leave without the other.

I like how this song perfectly captures the spirit of both X and Zero. X isn’t fighting to defeat his friend, but rather he’s fighting to save Zero’s soul so that he doesn’t become a maverick and so X doesn’t have to loose his friend again. Zero however isn’t trying to destroy X, but he is a soldier and is determined to complete the mission even if it means overworking his own circuits or even destroying himself to complete the mission.

It also reflects the conversation at the end of X4 where X makes Zero promise to destroy him if he ever became a Maverick, which was only compounded in Zero having to kill the closest thing he had to a functional romantic relationship.

Zero refuses, so they fight.

This fight was entirely preventable but I always felt that it was proof of their bond. They both genuinely believed the other might be going Maverick because of this new virus and refused to let anyone except themselves try to break through to the warrior they once knew.

It's preventable but also 100% understandable why it happened. X sees that zero is growing stronger the more he takes in the virus and like any best friend is telling him to go back to base because he's afraid that while he may seem stable now it might not remain that way. The way zero sees it is if this virus is making him stronger where even x isn't immune to him than it's best that he uses this power to end this conflict alone rather than risk x's life

I like how the two have the same mindsets, both twisted by what they fear about each other. X thinks Zero could and is going maverick due to the fact in X5, the virus in rare times transforms into Zero models and it’s the virus that’s the reason why mavericks are rapidly spreading and evolving. However, the gimmick here is that if you’re X, you slowly get poisoned and take damage if infected enough. But in zeros case, he’s HEALED and EMPOWERED by it as in the lore, before X1, Sigma and X were hunters together until they stumbled upon Zero who tried to kill them before. But when Zeros capture was opened, a hidden poison yet same poison created by DR.Wiley from the OG series infected a lot of the reploids, turning them into mavericks. This infected Sigma at some point which then around the same time, Zero became a good guy and quickly sped ran the ranks. There are 3 endings. (I think) Spoilers ahead. End 1: save the world successfully and have zero sacrifice himself. (Canon ending which leads into the Zero series) End 2: unsuccessfully save the world successfully and go in as X after Zero goes missing in the story. This initiates the X vs Zero fight. If you fail to save the world, zero will reawaken his old programming, using the virus to empower up and destroy humanity. X will go toe to toe with Zero in his true state and will defeat Zero but will pass out with a bad ending. End 3: successfully cure Zero at least and have X go first. However, when you go in as zero, you will fight X who’s very scared and confused after finding the truth. The fight initiates because X isn’t sure if Zero has gone maverick or even himself since Zero is immune to its ill effects. Zero fights X to defend himself but begins to wonder if X is slowly going maverick too. One thing I like about the song too is that zero and X use the same lines in “fire-“ but they differ in their sights. Zero at first says “fireFIGHT” as in the moment right now. Zero is better in close range combat but is decent at his aim. He’s got a black armor that empowers him strongly and isn’t canon but is fun to wear. X says “fireLIGHT” as in AFTER the battle. X is better and has sharper aim and multi tool flexibility. Smaller and lighter, and has the ability to wear many armors to make up for his own weaknesses. However, his Saber abilities are very limited as he usually does a single strong swing and it’s pretty slow but can hit for multiple strikes with that one swing.

A bit unrelated, but hear me out: A very unorthodox concept for shits n giggles. Model O proves too much for Aile to control, so she can't megamerge with it without going insane. Vent, on the other hand, can handle Model O perfectly fine (or so it seems) so he gives Model X and Model Z to her to better defend herself against the mavericks. Unfortunately, after a while, Vent starts being cruel and chaotic every time he's in Model O form, and it becomes addicting for him. So when Aile starts voicing any kind of concern, Vent brushes it off completely - saying he's fine and that she's overdramatic. But when Aile puts her foot down by demanding to get back to Guardian HQ so Fleuve can forcibly get Model O off of him, Vent refuses - and attacks her in anger. And a fight ensues. What inspired this? This song.
