Blizzard Buffalo is a looot like Frost Man. The bulk, the colors, the ice brick detailing in places, the charging.. And that animated intro takes it even further by giving him Frosty's ice sculpture habit!

In my opinion, I think the music is very appropriate. The stage and its maverick are both hollow shells of what they once were, and I think the somber waltz fits that. Also, I like the accidentals. It's nice to see an ice stage with music that doesn't evoke Christmas themes - it's not supposed to be happy.

What is it with Ice Mavericks and being really easy? I loved Kevvl's perfect run of this stage, the difficulty rating simply consisted of insane laughter followed by a 1/10. Even without breaking his AI, he was still the easiest Maverick he'd ever fought.

***** ice bosses are always pathetic. Think of this : Blizzack Stagroff was the easiest boss in Zero 3. Blizzard buffalo and Chill penguin are too easy. Seal Maverick from X4 is also overly easy. Oh Yeti !! He's hard but not the hardest in X8. But he's still lot more challenging than all of the above bosses. The hardest boss i can come up was Blizzack Stagroff in Zero 1. Mind that Stagroff appears in Z1 and Z3. Volcano and Fire Mavericks are terribly hard while Ice mavericks are simply a joke. Thats it.

I bet the lack of double damage pellets was because the upward dash leaves you with dash speed, so after up dashing you could fire dash shots freely by just hopping and tapping up and dash

Frost Shield is actually the best in the game if you know its hidden property. It actually *causes* health to drop more often! Little or big, just about every enemy drops health with absurd frequency. Combine that with its crazy attack pattern, and you've got one of the X series' hidden gems.

I think the issue with the boss's ai is that if you're jumping over him before he charges at you, he thinks you're going behind him... so it's smart but the boots letting you go straight up is fucking up the poor coding. It's code is probably just based on you dashing, thinking you're going to dash over and behind him...

What’s the deal with people saying X’s arm upgrade is bad? I think it’s ok at best, the damage might not be good and it is a little awkward... But I think if you get used to aiming and timing it correctly, The Cross-Charge Shot isn’t really that bad.

The difference between the charges... With one of them, he extends his horns a bit. It comes out slightly slower because of this extra animation, but if it hits X it will drag him and slam him into a wall, which hurts a bit more than Blizzard Buffalo just ramming into you.

Damon Katumaru There has been quite a few remixes to this song, but I think the version that stands out the most (for me anyways) is a piano version of Blizzard Buffalo's theme that was made around 3 years ago by Kinuyo Yamashita a.k.a. the composer of this soundtrack. They way she plays it on the piano is just haunting and yet soothing the same time. Definitely worth a listen. She's got it on her youtube account, approprately named KinuyoYamashita.

There should a Microsoft Word red squiggly line for every time Capcom have a very bad misspelling in their games. Bilzzard Buffalo (I misspelled his name on purpose, don't worry) actually has a fourth attack. When he's under half health, he can shoot this giant Ice Beam that covers half the screen and goes all the way to the other side of the room. The beam itself does not damage, but it freezes you solid and it's actually quite hard to break free from it, and given how long the beam is, if you mistime when you thaw out, you may just wind up getting frozen again. Also, when he hits you with his charge with his horns out, he actually picks you up and rams you straight into the wall, which does a lot of damage. That's the only difference from his vanilla charge attack. Also, I seem to remember Frost Shield being used a lot in AGDQ runs. I may have to check that again.

PinkKittyRose Oh, it is! Those guys who launch missiles and grenades (Until you beat Blast Hornet and down grade them to missiles only)? A single Frost Shield can destroy them outright AND most often leaves a large health drop; very handy to spam charging up your Sub Tanks. It has been a while since my PS2 died so I can't test this to be certain I'm remembering right, but those turrent guys with the single cannon on their backs definitely fall under this trick.

PinkKittyRose Well, Frost Shield is USEFUL. If it is used on certain types of enemies, it's 100% guaranteed for them to drop health energy, being the easiest way to recharge subtanks in this game.

Like I thought, the cutscenes and remixed music is from the Sega Saturn version of the game; problem is that as far as I can tell only Europe actually got that release. If you'd like I can dump the intro and Maverick cutscenes and the remixed Maverick stage music directly so that you're not fighting the Anniversary Edition's weirdness

Without the Buster Upgrade, about the only other upgrade you'll be able to grab is the Armor Upgrade, and that might require the Leg Chip for the double air dash. While I agree that the Cross-Charged shot isn't really worth much (changing in two shots for one is ALWAYS a bad idea), I will argue that the ability to store a charge shot is pretty invaluable in the later stages and in the final battle against Sigma. Useful weapons... out of the X3 lineup, there aren't that many- let's face it, while X3 had some epic music, the weapons... yeah. About the only ones really useful are the Acid Burst (Toxic Seahorse), Ray Splasher (Neon Tiger) and the Triad Thunder (Volt Catfish). You might also be able to make a case for the Tornado Fang (Tunnel Rhino) for its ability to keep hitting an enemy, but the others... yeah, they're mostly situational things. I'd go for Neon Tiger, myself- if you're not getting the Buster Upgrade, then you can clear it in one pass and grab a free Subtank and Heart Tank- and jam out to one of the better music tracks in the game- not to mention that the Ray Splasher is a very useful weapon that can put a lot of hurt on an enemy with one shot- but the board is yours, Pink.

Rain Feather See, the other problem with firing off the charges separately is that the first charge shot (the splitting orbs) is AWFUL! It does less damage than the regular charge shot, does not pierce, and splits awkwardly on impact. Due to how the shots combined, you also have to wait a bit before firing the second charge shot... It is just a huge, awkward, useless mess! Also you forgot the best weapon in the game... Spinning Blade! Using it like a shotgun (point blank shots) allow for some seriously easy kills against the majority of enemy types in the game. To me, there is no better weapon. Triad Thunder's definitely the next best, with Ray Splasher close behind, though. Acid Burst works good on most mini-bosses, too.

I always used to discount the Spinning Blade because of its short forward range- I'm more of a fan of simply blasting from a distance at things instead of getting up close and personal- though the charged-up Spinning Blade is my favorite charged weapon (who doesn't love giant spinning yo-yos of death?). It might not help that Crush Crawfish is usually the 8th Maverick I go after... so I never really have a chance to use it before I go after Doppler's Lab. I think this is reason enough to go play through X3 again myself and try it out. One of the things I love about the Buster Upgrade is the charged forms of the other, seemingly boring weapons (Gravity Well becomes a screen-clearing blast that sucks minor enemies away a la Gravity Hold, Parasite Bomb becomes a seek-and-destroy machine) while others... just kind of stink when charged (Ray Splasher just sprays shots everywhere from a central point, Tornado Fang just gives you a constant drill, and Frost Shield just gives you a shield...) - why is it that one form of each weapon is great and the other one is awkward? I do like that you went after Blizzard (or Bilzzard) Buffalo first- good grief, talk about an exploitable pattern... how was this not caught in QA? But while he may just be stuck in derp mode, the Frost Shield is actually one of the better weapons of the game. Lots of people focus on the fact that it takes a few seconds to get started- but that's because it's a shield, and the slow speed is to allow enemies to crash into it, or to nail stationary enemies- though you don't get the secondary effect unless the ice spike has been fully formed, and I don't think it does as much damage either.

But I'll note, I have the mp3 of the Saturn version's music and those off-key notes are NOT present. That might be an issue with either Pink's recording or with the collection itself.

Mega Man X in a nutshell: if it ain't Zero, try to fix the hell out of everything to make things for X "better". Removing the dash attack bonus to pellets in X3 and giving him a crummy arm upgrade, giving him a meh story in X4, having him suffer from the Sigma Virus in X5, the entirety of his side in X6 (Zero's side not much better though), getting set on the sidelines in X7 for a good chunk of the game, and intended as the main villain for the first Zero game to make Zero the official new "Mega Man" and not Copy X (X8 was the only one after X2 and the Xtreme games that treated X somewhat kindly). Only thing X has going for him are the armors, which are pretty good all things considered (dat Ultimate Armor...), but don't remember if the weapons X gets get progressively worse with each title compared to the skills Zero learns. Kinda wonder how much Inafune is to blame for all that given his favoritism for Tall Blonde and Handsome over Big Boy Blue. I know he didn't want X6 to happen, and it was more of a rushed job than MM3 (which though rushed, turned out relatively fine), but it's like every game Zero's playable in, X gets the figurative short end of the stick (right UMvC3 X skin alt Zero?). At least Smash 4 is treating him somewhat better than Zero (but only because he's included in Mega Legends. Everything else X has, Zero has too. That said, perhaps I ought to vote for X and/or Zero in the upcoming Smash Ballot, even though X would be based more or less off of Mega's template with different functions such as weapons and dashing and the like).

***** Zero was actually Inafune's original design for Mega Man X. He was told it didn't look enough like Mega Man, so he had to create a new design, which became X, but he kept the original design in as Zero. Maybe that's why Zero gets more attention: his way of making sure his original design still gets all the attention.

I think that's why Inafune was able to get away with making Zero so prevalent: he gave him some cool toys and moves, but he made sure not to neglect X too much; he just doesn't get as many cool toys save some of his armors. Akira Toriyama gave Goku everything from day 1, and the moment he tried to introduce a replacement, fans and executives alike said no to Gohan. Gohan still gets favoritism to be sure, but unlike Zero, he'll never see center stage for very long because Goku has to be the one who gets the glory and cool transformations.

I have no idea why everyone says this game is so easy. X3 is EASILY the hardest game in the entire series. You get twice by Buffalo, you're dead. The basic enemies take off a 4th of your life bar every time they hit you. EASILY the hardest of the entire series.

The more I watch this video, the more I think that Buffalo's problem is terrible A.I. scripts. I imagine the reason why he reacts if you try to jump that high is he's supposed to turn and rush you if you try to hurdle him to get away. But the check is simply based on how high X is, not where in the room he is in relation to the boss. If the turn-and-rush reaction had been coded properly to say, only trigger when X is directly above Buffalo and not to interrupt any other attack pattern otherwise... maybe he wouldn't have been so much of a joke.
