There was this series in Tamil that aired in the 90s 'marma desam' 1995 - 2001. This was a huge show that had many seasons that touched upon paranormal, psychological thriller, sci fi, folklore based thriller. 'Marma Desam' was a pioneer genre in Tamil even before American Horror Stories were made there. Hope some OTT player revives the series on the lines of thriller of all sorts psychological, crime, gore slasher, paranormal, creature feature, horror etc.

I was a child when it came out. My family used to watch it regularly. Recently a few years back I watched all the episodes on kavithaalaya youtube channel. In my opinion, it was way ahead of its time and one of my fav shows ever.

I've binge watched 'Marmadesam - Vidaathu Karuppu' during covid time. The writing of the series is another level that the writers have mixed Horror, Thriller and Psychology in a perfect level. And, the parallels between past and present 🔥 It's one of the best series ever made in Tamil. Available in Kavithalayaa youtube channel

@@sairam764 yea and the camera work for different perspectives of how he develops those multiple personalities right from his childhood was shown with camera work. I hope they revive the series with still more complex psychological, horror, crime, and even gore thrillers. The show has such potential even now. I got hooked up with American horror stories recently. They are quite similar to marma Desam. But MD was made a decade before AHS. There is a real life incident of a family killing a maid in Kerala Pathanamthitta last year. They did for a spiritual sacrifice for gaining wealth and were cannibals too. They ate pieces of the dead women. The woman was Tamil. Shocking and so gore it was. Immediately thought of marma Desam if it were to be made into a series.

I wish BR had asked how subtitles brought the Pan-Indian audience together for OTT. Loved the different perspectives and discussion. Avinash and Jim are more frank and forthcoming, Shobita is more diplomatic and people pleasing, Raj and DK have been frank enough to share their experiences, Pushkar Gayathri explains quite well what works with the audience and the nitty gritties of getting different shows greenlit.

Awesome interview. Love the way BR brings a diverse set of folks to a panel (south/north, writers, actors, producers). Provides key insights and keeps the viewer engaged. In some ways, Galatta Plus and BR are like what OTT does, bring unique and engaging content via "interviews" and build a community of consumers around it. So different from a typical interview process (la mainstream :) ) where the interviewer and panel ask standard Qs. One sequel to this interview would be to bring Amazon/Netflix/Sony Live OTT providers and explain how they source OTT content, their selection criteria and explain the various players in the eco-system, and how the writer/director/producer can find the right OTT distribution mechanism.

My 2 cents - The problem with "Bollywood" or other Indian cinema is half of them made rubbish in the 1980s, 1990s and 2000s. Mostly cringeworthy romance or slow motion action dramas with 8-9 songs in each film. On top of that, they rejected Indic roots and culture and tried too hard to match up to Hollywood. British TV, Hollywood or Korean TV works because they are extremely unapologetic regarding their culture and they do not have a casual attitude towards their audiences. They take their work seriously and are constantly striving to raise the bar. Finally, in the past 8-9 years I'll say that Indian cinema/streaming content is beginning to move in the right direction.

Please bring game changing, Leonardo di Caprio-isque performer Thalapathy Vijay and talk about his performance in the most fresh script like Leo which had new school writing, gave enough content for hollywood to copy as well. First time I took netflix seriously was when Stranger Things came on.

People from all around the world are eagerly anticipating it.
