Mega ED is still an amazing flashcart. I paid $39 for a brand new Mega ED X3 during the last sale, and it plays every Genesis/MD game (aside from VR, same as this flashcart), every SMS, every 32X, most GG games converted to SMS. So $39 for a cart which plays 93% of the entire collection, or another $231 more to play another 6%. It's a tough sell. I also wouldn't be surprised to see Krikzz announce his own Mega ED w/ Sega CD support since he's moving onto more powerful FPGA chips for his line of flashcarts.

arranmc182 Sega had the “cool” image in the USA too, you know. They were neck and neck for most of their life and Nintendo didn’t really pull ahead until the end... when Sega was moving on anyway while confusing people about their intentions to support the Genesis in the USA.

Don't let this guy mislead you! The Turbo Duo was the first game system on the market and many games were on the Duo first, why Sherlock Holmes was released almost 2 years earlier on the Duo. Also you need to buy a Genesis console in addition the Sega CD while the Duo has games such as Gates of thunder which have the arcade feel.

And if you mod your Megadrive/Genesis to play all regions, you don't even need to mod the CD, just patch the game when you burn for the region of your CD drive, and then change the region on the MD/Gen when the Sonic screen is on. It's how I play Sega CD games on my Megadrive with an unmodded MegaCD.

Especially considering the prices of games back in the day. A lot of the time, towards the end of the 16-bit generation, the software could cost just as much or more than the base system. If an MD was 90-100US to buy a core system, there were games in the range of 70-100 depending on how large they were if they included special chips. Luckily, we also had a lot of 20-30US discount software that were major sellers.

Be careful, Terraonion relocated to Andorra without telling the buyers. When the pre-orders went online, it was written tax-free and the company was located in Spain. Then they silently announced 2 months later, after having shipped everything, that they were actually located in Andorra. Everyone in Europe has to pay between 70 and 90 euros taxes to get the Mega SD. This is a very bad move from them and a straight insult to people supporting them despite the already high price of the product.

Home based cdr drives just didn't exist back then. Heck it didn't even become common until well past the systems death. Pulling down a 300-600mb game and being able to burn it was an expensive cutting edge kind of thing. I paid something ridiculous like $500 for an scsi burner back around the psx days. Downloading games was such a pain that I used to pay people in various foreign countries via western union money transfer. For around $5 a disc I could get a pressed copy with color artwork on the disc, and a color printed front/back cover. It was wonderful being able to play every import I wanted in a time that importing games from Japan was uncommon and hideously expensive.

It was released in 1991. The cost of a CD-writer was over $1400 at the time, and a single blank CD-R was over $10 each. Who in their right mind would spend that kind of money just to copy a game when it was cheaper to just buy it outright? By the time prices came down the Sega CD was already out of production.

You know it's going to happen and it'll drive the prices down. Those CYCLONE V FPGAs are now around $36 in bulk. I understand there is more to it than just that, but most reviewers as quick to menrion the "powerful FPGA tech" after telling you the price. There is little reason to charge $270 for this. $150 should allow for a nice profit while giving the customer a break. Speaking of reviews, I also wish they would stop listing the price of current Sega CD games "being $400+" as a reason to why this will pay for itself. ISOs and roms are worthless. You can also burn Sega CD games on a $.30 blank CD.

Setting aside emulation. This is honestly an amazing thing for preservation and archiving since by this point you spent how much on your cd collection? Rip to iso or bin/cue and you never have t otouch the discs again. Looking forward to what the MD+ Format will give. I mean fine yes the 'crunchy' sound from the genesis is iconic, but being able to extend things a bit is always a nice option to breath new life into old classics.

I'm glad you compared the price to the Mega EDX7. A lot of the comments seem to compare it to an X3 just to highlight the price difference. The X3 definitely has good compatibility and does the job, but the X7 and MegaSD have several other quality of life additions and increased compatibility that make each of them worth their asking prices to me. I have a MegaSD since i've never had the desire to own a Sega CD console, but did want to experience some of the games. Considering there are a handful of individual Sega CD games that are excellent and cost more than the MegaSD by themselves, I felt it was a good investment to not only have access to all of Sega CD, but also multiple other Sega console libraries. It's a nice product and it's also helped me cut back on scouring Ebay for physical genesis carts, which is nice to save money and have more space.

I don't think any current consumer priced FPGA can handle 32-bit calculations just yet. It may be a few years away, but I'd love to see Analogue release an FPGA based Sega CD add-on, which could allow you to either play games from SDcard, or from an optional USB 3.0 portable optical drive. Those currently sell for as low as $18 brand new and arent much larger than a CD jewel case. It could sit perfectly under the Mega Sg itself. A nice visual throwback to the model 1 Genesis / Sega CD as well.

@@videogameobsession Consumer-priced FPGAs can most certainly handle cores that perform 32-bit calculations. There's nothing special about that support. Every FPGA out there can handle such cores. Keep in mind, FPGAs don't perform any calculations themselves. The merely provide a gate array that is field programmable (meaning the end user can reprogram it--"in the field", meaning wherever the customer is located). The cores define the gate arrays, and the cores can use more gates in their definition to perform calculations at higher bit width. Even the cheapest FPGA available today has enough gates to create a CPU that performs 512-bit SIMD calculations (like AVX-512 on the latest Intel Core chips), or theoretically unlimited bit width. You don't have to implement an ALU of the same bit width as you wish to perform calculations at with your ISA. As an example, the Z80 was an 8-bit internal CPU, meaning it had an 8-bit internal bus and registers and it performed calculations on 8-bit operands. However, it used a multiplexed 4-bit ALU. The same can be done to perform 32-bit calculations using 8x multiplexing. Or any other bit width ALU could be multiplexed. With an FPGA some cores use a single adder circuit (1-bit), and cycle the 32 bits (or other number of bits) through, thus allowing for a simpler, smaller circuit at the expense of performance. I'm not sure if any cores have multiplexed a 1-bit ALU to perform 32-bit calculations, but it's theoretically possible.

Just going on data that was said by the ones programming in Verilog. The current Cyclone V FPGA was said to have used up around 70% of its logic on just the 8-bit Z-80, 16-bit Motorola 68K, Yamaha audio, and the rest. I didn't see how it could be possible to fit a dual 32-bit Hitachi CPU + 4 more co-processors on an affordable consumer grade FPGA. consumer grade being like current prices of Cyclone V tech.

Technically 32X CD games will work (if you have a 32X and aren't using an Analogue Mega Sg) but you'd need an expansion port adapter. TerraOnion have said they'll make them if there's enough interest.

FPGA is a mean of fit all circuit board of original sega cd (including mentioned motorolla chip). Because fpga is made from 14 (or 28) nm nodes it can fit whole board of sega that was made with 130 or so nm techprocess. In conclution: this is NOT an emulation (by software), it is real hadware but in a small package. Same goes for Analogue consoles.

Neat that it all works through the cart slot and all, but it's very, very pricey. It's like buying a $39 Mega ED x3 flashcart and a $231 FPGA Sega CD clone. Even less worth it if you already own an Analogue Mega Sg clone system.

The price is too big a barrier for entry for me. An actual Mega-CD is cheaper and you can just download disc images and burn them to CD-R and they run on the actual hardware with no modification

With 2019 patience have fun with the load times, plus CDs break down and wear out the system. Who wants to spend hours burning discs? It's a time saver so yes, a worthy investment for those who would rather not deal with all the frustration.
