Mega Slam Hoops XL Review

This is my amateur review of the Mega Slam Hoops XL basketball goal. I researched basketball goals for a few months before making this purchase. I was looking for a regulation 72" hoop and this product ultimately won out. It was very difficult discovering which hoop to purchase because good video reviews from customers are few and far between. My goal was to find the best combination of sturdiness and price on the market. After completing my search, I am convinced that I not only found the sturdiest hoop on the market, but it was actually several hundred dollars less expensive than inferior models.
The other risk that I took was that Mega Slam Hoops are only sold direct from the manufacturer and I was not able to try this product before buying it. I had hands on time with other brands such as Goalrilla, Goalsetter and PROformance Hoops. All of the other brands cost more money for their highest end model and used smaller diameter poles and thinner gauge steel. The only reviews that I had to go by were the reviews on Mega Slam's website, which to be fair, are always suspicious to me as a consumer. I may not have found out about this company if it were not for a professional installer named Mike Mehrle. He did a great job installing my hoop, and if you watch some of the newer installation videos on Mega Slam's website he actually shown in the videos. Part of my motivation for making this video is to help this smaller, lesser known company to get some recognition for an outstanding product.
Every aspect of this sale went smoothly. The customer service was top notch. Matt helped me with large and small details to ensure that I would love this product. As soon as the product arrived via UPS Freight I knew right away that this system was being delivered as advertised because every last item appeared extremely high quality in the packaging. After the system was installed, the hoop played as close to a gym quality hoop as I feel as one can purchase for a residential goal. The rim has customizable break-away tension which is factory preset around 165 lbs. The hoop is easy to adjust from 5.5' feet to 10'. My 6 year old has no trouble adjusting it at all. Finally for young hoopers being able to set this hoop all the way down to 5.5' gave him the confidence that he needed to start playing some basketball without major frustration. You will see through research that some goals only can be lowered to 7.5'. I hope this review helps to highlight the best features of the Mega Slam Hoops XL basketball goal.

Just installed mine a few months ago. This hoop system is amazing! Worth the money and effort putting it up. I have the light kit as well which is a game changer. My only complaint is the pro 180 rim is ridiculously tight. Its like shooting on a play ground double thick rim. Best touch in the world is not getting a roll on this hoop. Any miss you can expect to chase it down to half court off the rim bounce. Hoping it breaks in with more use. No other issues though, buy it you'll love it.

I must say your observation of little mans shooting form is 100% dead balls money accurate..I never thought of it that way..but it makes alot of sense..,if the kid is right or left..as long as he or she is going with the "dominate side"..that will serve them better down road..as opposed to just "pushing" it from center of chest with both hands...little mans shot at the very end proves your "shooting form" observation to be correct...great observation dude..

He also hustles quickly for the ball👍 I finally got mine installed even though I'm older 54, on dialysis, and barely can see out of one eye, and overweight with a lot of other health issues. Beautiful goal! I've noticed these other hoops are pointing at a frustrating ASTM safety regulation that limits a conforming goal from adjusting under 7.5'. For my young family, one of the selling points is having a goal that goes lower. There's a lot of Goalrillas around here, and they look great, but seeing that MegaSlam is built for and warrantied for dunking and hanging and that the rim doesn't sandwich the glass is selling me.

Yeah it's nice that their goals go down to 5' and 5' 6". My 7 year old can finally touch the rim on the lowest height and he is so pumped to try to dunk this summer.

It seems like a lot of noise is resonating from the post whenever you release the rim on a dunk or even just hitting it with the ball on a shot. I'm not sure if that's a result of having such a large hollow pole or if it's just the mic on the camera being extra sensitive. Is the goal overly loud or does it just seem that way on the video? Other than the noise the thing looks like a beast and I'd love to have the five foot overhang of the XL model. Just not sure if I could put up with the loud gong all the time.

I don't think it's overly loud when I play. It's just a big system so you are going to hear some metal noise when shooting or dunking but it's a really solid sound. I hope that helps.

Thanks for the video review. The length of my play area is 31', its a double driveway with an RV pad in the front yard. Do you think the XL would be to much with the additional 1' overhang compared to the 72? I'm buying one of these for me and my kids but can't decide on which one to get? Thanks!

Man, it's tough to say. It sounds like you have a decent amount of room. I don't think 1 foot of overhang would make a huge difference. Both goals are great. If you have flexibility to move the base further off your play area then you could compensate for the extra 1 foot of overhang. For really competitive games I think more overhang is better because that means less chance of running into the main pole. Good luck! Looks like I'll go with the XL being it's not that big of a price difference when you're already spending quite a bit. When you upgrade the rim to the better one on the 72 the price is right there. How tall was the hoop when you were dunking and hanging in the rim? I’m 150 pounds and am wondering if you think hanging on 8.5 feet will be fine or if it will break

I think it was around 8 and 1/2 ft. You can't break the basket. I don't think someone over 200 lb would have an issue.

I have not had to use the warranty. It takes a few minutes to raise and lower it all the way.

Well I wasn't really looking at the 60. The choice was between the XL and the 72 since I wanted a regulation backboard. To me the price difference was small enough that the XL made sense.

It's holding up great! Keep in mind we have some tough winters in Ohio so the hoop has been exposed to the elements. I don't see any major rust, just slight fading of the paint on the rim. The raising and lowering mechanism is perfect and so is the rim and backboard. My in-laws just purchased the game light and net protect for my son for Christmas. Those two items are awesome as well and we can't wait to use them. I looked at GoalSetter and Proview as I have a local company with a showroom and everything on the Mega Slam is just better constructed. I hope that helps.

I don't know the exact size but I did fit about 90% of a true half-court with the stencil kit (just cut off the corner 3 point line by about 1-1.5 feet.). I have maybe another 7 to 8 feet past the top of the key before I touch my garage. I hope that helps.

The xl has the nicer rim but you can pay to upgrade the 72. Greater overhang and wider pole and more weight for increased stability.

It's all listed on their website. To summarize, the XL has a larger main pole (that means less wobble), 5' overhang from the pole vs 4', weighs more and comes standard with the nicer rim. The backboards are identical on both models.
