This looks way better than the PC Engine. It's faithful to the arcade version here, right down to its terror hockey mask. The opening where Rick smashes the SEGA logo is downright awesome. Makes me wonder that why they didn't ported this on the Mega Drive to begin with.
@douglasmurphy32663 ай бұрын
The hardware is more than capable as the arcade isn't using any higher resolution or crazy color depth. In 1988-1990 the main issue was the cost of cartridge ROM, so most early Megadrive games were 1 Mbit to 2 Mbit. Games got better over time largely due to ROM budgets getting larger. This game could probably be done nicely on 8 Mbits to 16 Mbits if they kept every single frame of animation.
@MonsterBathGamesInc3 ай бұрын
@@douglasmurphy3266 While the art isn't eating up much of the rom space - the music and SFX are. I've probably fit in about 15 of the samples from the arcade so far, and with the music (there is a lot of music) and artwork it's already sitting just over 1.5MB. I do have to clean up some unused bits but it's probably going to end up being a hefty rom regardless. I'm going to try my best to keep it under 4MB.
@jeffm50563 ай бұрын
That looks incredible. I'm always amazed and even a little saddened when we get these homebrews because I feel like the Genesis was fully capable of games that were better than the ones we got.
@danmakuman3 ай бұрын
The real problem back then was the lack of bigger ROM size and time development. There's great games on the console that took advantage of the system, specially original titles but we have to consider that it was a business and they couldn't take the time to polish a lot of details or working more the color palettes. The console was indeed capable of this and more but those were mostly the reasons it wasn't that way back then.

This is amazing! I always wondered why Namco never ported the original Splatterhouse to the Genesis/Mega Drive. This looks like an official release! Very impressive! Kudos to the hacking team working on this conversion! I'm looking forward to this and more of these 16-bit projects!
@thedrunkmonkshow3 ай бұрын
I know Arcade Splatterhouse like the back of my hand and aside from the color reduction that's expected from the genesis hardware, this is pixel perfect and I'm shocked there's no flicker. That Sega intro was brilliant and reminded me that not a lot of homebrews, if any, have done that. I really, really want to listen to the music to see how faithful it is because while Namco System 1 and Genesis both have FM chips, System 1 uses OPM which uses different algorithms to the Genesis OPN YM2612. This might also be the most impressive usage of the Scorpion Engine too I've seen thus far and is very polished for such an early beta.

Man, I remember asking master linkuei some three years back if he was able to put together a small demo of the original splatter house, and he whipped it up using some of the Mortal Kombat arcade edition sound effects in no time. And then these developers just end up making three completed stages. I’m just glad that some sort of ball was rolling to get the original splatter house on the Sega Genesis. I had commented to master linkuei that the genesis had the sequels why not have the originals as well to make it a completed trilogy? I had also asked for a Magic Sword demo. I think that would be a great genesis game. The Genesis had a closer CPS 1 music sound to it.

I can see why the mega version is clearer, they had fewer colors at the same time to work with all the shades of green the game demands - but the can circumvent it using the "light" effect built in, to make it darker and almost duplicate the simultaneous color on screen.

I wonder if someone will pick up the torch and finally bring the original Shinobi to the Mega Drive at some point. I didn't know about this engine, I thought the SGDK was the only alternative for projects like these, I'm happy that this isn't the case, as the more options, the better.

I've always loved how these games pay homage to some of the more obscure horror icons like 'The Deadly Spawn'. 0:52 Something that's always irritated me about side-scrolling games from this era is that your character always jumps too high but not far enough compared to how a regular person jumps. Contrast with 'Out of This World' and the original Flashback (but that was the early '90s).
