As a bookstore worker, I can say it's the spacing between the letters and between the lines. It's also the formatting of the whole thing. The space on top, on the sides and the bottom from the actual writing. I still don't know why they do it though.

I’ve read two of James Pattersons romances - Suzanne’s Diary for Nicholas and Sam’s Letters to Jennifer and they were surprisingly so good….tear jearkers. It’s been a while since reading them but I don’t recall any spice.
