It's a game noted as having the best drums in a Sega Mega Drive/Genesis game and this soundtrack is one of the system's finest! Excellent use of chords and rhythms as well as beautiful use of the PSG synchronised square waves.
A remarkable moment in music gaming history for German video game music and sound artist Chris Huelsbeck who coded this awesome Western Mega Drive/Genesis sound driver for the system.
Mega Turrican is a run and gun video game, developed by Factor 5 in 1993 and marketed by Data East in 1994. Part of the Turrican series, it was designed for the Mega Drive/Genesis, and later followed by an Amiga port converted by Kaiko and Neon Studios under the title of Turrican 3: Payment Day. Despite not being the original, the Amiga version was the one that was first commercially released in 1993, published by Rainbow Arts in Germany and Renegade in the rest of Europe. The Mega Drive version did not have a publisher and stayed unreleased from spring 1993 until 1994, when Data East took over its worldwide distribution. Data East itself released the game in North America, and contracted Sony Imagesoft for the game's distribution in Europe.
NOTES:
1. The Mega Drive version of the game was re-released on the Wii's Virtual Console service in Europe and Australia on March 22, 2008 and on April 14, 2008 in North America.
2. The ''Ending Theme'' that plays over the staff roll is omitted from the game's sound test for unknown reasons and can only be heard by successfully completing the game.
3. The music sounds very Japanese much like something Yuzo Koshiro could have made as he even used the PSG square waves the same way.
4. Not sure I like Stage 2 and 4's music, a bit too atmospheric for my taste, but still done in high quality.
5. My Mega-CD was cutting out in audio when playing back music CDs prior to making this video, so I wasn't sure i'd get this finished. I have since cleaned the lens and the top loader with some methylated spirits on a cotton bud and all is good now.

As usual, recorded it from my PAL SEGA Mega Drive VA5 November 1991 model 1 console through the front 3.5 mm headphone jack onto a blank recordable CD-R and played back in my PAL SEGA Mega-CD II attachment to my PAL Mega Drive model 1 console. Confused yet?

Mega Turrican has rather interesting development history as Factor 5 originally wanted Konami to publish both Super and Mega Turrican internationally but Konami declined the offer for unknown reasons. The most impressive part about Mega Turrican is how Chris Huelsbeck used so many features of the Mega Drive sound hardware for creating this soundtrack. - Two channel software mixing for PCM playback is used through out the the entire game. Even with software mixing, the percussion samples are crystal clear. I guess one of the software channels also plays the speech and sound effect samples. - This is one of the very few European Mega Drive soundtracks that use the actual PSG. Toy Story is the other European developed Mega Drive game I can recall using the actual PSG but that game used the GEMS sound driver. - The oscillator extension feature for FM Channel 3 is used for sine chords in Stage 1-2. Matt Furniss used this feature in Wiz n' Liz. - The cut-down and undocumented SSG-EG is used in Stage 4-1. The only Mega Drive game that uses this feature more prominently is Beavis and Butt-Head. This is definitely unpopular opinion but I prefer the composition and soundtracks of Super and Mega Turrican over Turrican II.

I thought the game had a split DAC channel as you can hear the crash cymbals at the same time as the drums and they fade out naturally like a brass cymbal. Unless a single recorded sample of a crash cymbal and kick drum together is implicated in the channel like (Sonic 3 & Knuckles) the only other way to play two samples at once is to split it in two and you're right, those samples are crystal clear even with the split method, unlike Street Fighter II or Ristar.
