As someone who lives in the US and loves British Steam Locomotives, those Pullman Coaches, Hornby A4s, and especially that GWR City Class locomotive were absolutely gorgeous! Whoever sent that, that was a spectacular gift!

Hi SMT! Just to let you know that the athearn genesis mikado locomotive at 24:00 is meant to have the decoder socket sticking out, its designed to slip into the tender, but not actually connect to it! Also it doesnt have a dcc decoder or dummy plug connected to the end, and so it will not run as-is, however if you fit one, it should work! Hope this helps!

I worked on one around a year ago, I was surprised by how Athearn set all of this up.

Hiya OO is 1/76 because when Hornby Dublo (Mecanno) started producing British outline model trains back in the 1930’s they had to enlarge HO (Half O) to accomodate the huge motors of the time. The reason being that the British loading gauge is smaller than the European one. So in the UK we’ve stuck with 1:76 which is 4mm to the foot rather than HO’s 3.5mm/foot or 1/87 scale. It means of course that the gauge is too narrow. So some really serious 1/76 modellers build their own track and rolling stock with a gauge of 18.83mm rather than the OO/HO 16.5mm. This is called ProtoFour (P4) or Scalefour. Another gauge with 1/76 scale is EM gauge which is 18mm gauge, I believe it was the first attempt to produce something closer to true 4mm though the gauge is still 0.83mm too narrow - which is where P4 and ScaleFour came into the picture. Looks like you need to build a UK outline layout in OO 😂 GWR City Class is a 4-4-0 rather than a 4-4-2 Atlantic. This one’s classmate is of course « City of Truro » which is said to have achieved the first 100mph in 1903. The first official 100mph of course was LNER A3 4472 Flying Scotsman.

When OO came to the USA, they opted for a more scale gauge. iirc American OO is 19mm gauge. It's pretty obscure now, though it has a small cult following even in the present day- Lionel famously offered a small OO product line in the late '30s and early '40s, which is quite collectable now.

The movie “The Train” is an excellent movie a later version a couple years ago was The Monument Men. Both are about the Nazis in WWll stealing all types of art as they retreated from France. A scene in The Train is one of the best if not the best train wreck scene. The director had cameras set all around where the action was to occur. He ad them all in place but still had one left and not sure what to do with it,(as the story goes) ? So he had a crew member dig a hole and aim the camera up at the tracks. You’ll know the scene when it happens! Enjoy the movie.

The Dec is definitely a PRR I1 class 2-10-0 loco. The high mount headlight, belpaire firebox, and center mount number plate are dead giveaways. The Pennsy Tender is an 210P75 or 210P85 "coast to coast" tender. The Pennys was very fond of running large tenders with lots of coal with smaller water tanks. They used water pick ups on most tenders with track pans throughout the system

Remember that the Deltic model is OO scale (1:76.2), so putting it next to an HO DDA40X is not a fair comparison. HO Deltic model would be 7/8 the dimensions of the OO model.

The golden arrow was a luxury boat train operated by the southern railway and later british rail linking London to Dover where people would then catch a ferry to France. The last train ran on September 30th 1972. The train is kept in memory by the preserved bluebell railway who run their own version of the train to this day

That Decapod 2-10-0 steam loco is a Bowser I believe. It's usually a Pennsylvania RR livery (maybe exclusively) They were offered as kits and RTR. My Dad gave me one when I was a kid like a dummy and I wrecked it promptly. Later in life I found out the kits existed. I built the Prr K-4 Pacific from the same company as an experiment to see if I could do it and it came out nice. I went back to pick up the Decapod kit and Bowser stopped making steam loco kits unfortunately. I did pick a RTR up on Ebay recently for nostalgia sake, haven't even tested if it runs. It's just nice to have one in 1 piece.

Something to add regarding the Proto 2000 locomotives: I have a handful of them, all but one new in the box like yours. Every single one of them has suffered from split gears, and they will exhibit those exact symptoms. They run fine, start making a little noise, then suddenly lock up. Fortunately, replacement gears are readily available and inexpensive. Otherwise they are nice running machines. Hopefully you find that information useful. By the way, those British locomotives are really beautiful, especially the City of Coventry and the Appledore. Hopefully you are able to get the Deltic figured out. I’ll be looking forward to that video!!! Cheers from Wisconsin!!!

I know a fair bit of background on your new British additions City of London is a Great Western 3400 class (known as City class). A member of that class called "City of Truro" supposedly did 100 mph in 1905. City of Coventry is a Princess Coronation class, formerly of the LMS. The first batch were modified for a streamlined casing. City of Coventry was one of a later batch that was built as originally designed, with no accommodation for streamlining. The engine from the Golden Arrow pack is a Merchant Navy class, in a later rebuilt condition. Originally, these had an airsmoothed casing (like the Battle of Britain, but larger) and were the first class of Oliver Bullied's pacifics. The Battle of Britain class was one of two mechanically identical classes that were built because the Merchant Navies were a bit large and heavy for some lines. Both the Battle of Britains and the Merchant Navies were responsible in their day for hauling the Southern Railway's various luxury Pullman services ( such as the Goled Arrow and Bornmouth Belle) of which your exquisite passenger cars depict. Dominion of Canada, restored to an LNER like condition, is the locomotive you saw in the museum. Your model of her is in late BR condition. Mallard actually lives in York, England at the Railway Museum there. Hope you found this informative!

Nice find! I just found something of my own a few days ago: an Athearn BN 6947 SD9 (at least I think that that's the road number, I'm too lazy to go and find it on the layout). Apparently, at least according to the book on Athearn that I checked out at the library, it is rare and hence worth at least $64. A lot more than the $12 I paid for it! Also, in my experience, most British "HO" trains are actually OO Scale (but not OO Gauge), and hence slightly inaccurate.

A4's had Corridor Tenders "A corridor tender is a locomotive tender with a passageway to one side, allowing crew changes on the fly. The London and North Eastern Railway (LNER) decided that from the start of their summer timetable on 1 May 1928, the Flying Scotsman service would run non-stop over the 392.7 miles (632.0 km) between London King's Cross and Edinburgh Waverley. The locomotives to be used were of that railway's class A1, and the schedule was for the journey to be completed in 8+1⁄4 hours. This was too long to allow a single crew to handle the train without a rest; means were therefore sought by which the crew could be changed at approximately the half-way point. The LNER's locomotive design team, headed by Nigel Gresley, produced a new design of tender that was slightly longer than the old, but built as high and wide as possible without compromising the loading gauge. A passageway was incorporated along the right-hand side, and at the rear end a Pullman type gangway connection was fitted, together with a buckeye coupler, both of which were compatible with LNER coaches. The gangway was of concertina pattern, and was pressed against the corresponding gangway on the leading coach by means of sprung pistons. Although a normal gangway connection was used, the passageway through the tender was only 5 feet (1.52 m) high and 18 inches (0.46 m) wide, and the floor of the passage was 2 feet (0.61 m) above the bottom of the water tank, requiring two steps at both ends. The passageway was illuminated by a single circular window in the tender rear panel, placed high up and to the right of the corridor connection.[20] Ten of these tenders were placed in service between April and September 1928, of which three were attached to new locomotives of Class A3; two were attached to existing Class A3 locomotives, and five attached to Class A1 locomotives. The design was patented by Gresley in August 1928. In service, the relief crew travelled in the front coach of the train, and as the train approached the half-way point, they left their seats and made their way forward through the corridor tender to the locomotive cab. On their arrival, the previous crew then handed over the controls and went back to the seats in the train vacated by the relief crew. Another corridor tender (Number 5484) was built in 1929 for use with the new Class W1 4-6-4 no. 10000;[24] four more were built in 1935 with the first four locomotives of the new Class A4, and a final seven were built with the 1937 batch of Class A4 locomotives, making a total of 22. The original ten were reconditioned in 1936-1937 and attached to other Class A4 locomotives. In May 1948, the 1929-built corridor tender was transferred to a locomotive of Class A4, after which all 22 remained with this class until withdrawal

Hornby produces OO scale, which is 1/76 scale, and HO is 1/87. They both run on the same track. I think Hornby did this so they could fit a better engine in some of the earlier models, or have more space to make the valve gear.

That "40 ton" switcher is actually a 44 ton switcher from Spectrum.

I was defiantly wrong about the 40 ton part but that unit isn't made by Spectrum.

They look cool. I'm jealous. I wish I had viewers send me trains. I wish I had those British trains. There so expensive to buy.

Those sd7/9 from lifelike proto are prone to split axle gears which is a easy fix with replacement ones or new wheel sets.

Proto 2000 are known for split wheel gears. My guess is that is what is wrong with your Great Northern Unit. Thankfully you can use Athearn replacement axel gears which are still produced as a fix.
