It kinda hit me when Derrick said "that was the era when you could beat video games over and over." I'm just about finished with my last year of medical school. My time is already limited as it is (though not as much as in the first three years), and it's about to become even more limited once I (hopefully) enter residency. I've BEEN able to play games throughout school but not with nearly as much liberty as before. As a result, my backlog has only grown and grown because despite my lack of time, I still very much enjoy playing games as a hobby. They've helped me deal with stress and overall, they make a good distraction when played in moderaton. That said, games are very much one-and-done experiences nowadays. I play them, enjoy the gameplay, characters, and story, and then I shelve them. Very rarely do I pick up a game to play it a second time. Anyways, what Derrick said made me think of my childhood. Those were the days when I would get maybe one or two games per year and I would 1) take my sweet time playing them and 2) I would play them over and over. If the game was a platformer or one that required fast reactions, I actually felt like I developed a certain mastery over it, you know, beyond the minimum requirements to clear.

The pokemon situation has to do with GameFreak cutting corners for the past few gens. Most people let it slide because of the 3DS limitations, but then SwSh cut pokemon with the excuse of higher quality animations and graphics only to reuse animations and produce the weakest first party graphics on the system. It didn't help that Let's Go came out the year previous and continued GameFreak's reliance on nostalgia over further evolution of the series.

I used to work at a big chain grocery store on the east coast, and I shit you not, we had a rule that if we as stockers were asked by a customer what a product tasted like, we were allowed to open the product (whether it be chips, crackers, a sauce) and offer them a sample. If they liked it, we were to turn in the open product and offer them a new unopened package.

Man, as I get older, I just fucking love Shawn more. I went to an elementary school that had a collaboration with a ballroom dancing movie in New York? I think it was called Mad Hot Ballroom, and it led me to go to a performing arts middle school except I started doing band. I did a different instrument every year and while I had a nice sense of music and rhythm I was never able to really make good on that "potential" or whatever except the last year of middle school we made the first marching band in the neighborhood for a social event and we did covers of popular and culturally important songs cuz our conductor/teacher went out of his way to look for and make sheet music for a lot of that stuff...

I decided to revisit gta v over quarantine and wow. I kinda forgot how amazing it is. It’s still REALLY impressive, I can’t even imagine how they’d top it with a sequel… that’s probably why it’s taking like 10 years to make. I feel like the industry has been resisting increasing game prices to $70 for a long time now, simply because sticker shock is a completely real thing and the $10 bump does make a big difference on whether people decide to make a purchase. Instead what games have been doing is disguising the price increase as DLC, microtransactions, subscription services, deluxe editions, and so on. People won't pay $70 for a game, but they'll easily buy a $60 game and a $30 DLC season pass. $70 seems like too much for a full game, but they'll happily spend 1 or 2 bucks for a new costume or weapon, even though a costume in no way equates to 1/60th of the work required to make the full game. I think Derrick might be a bit naive about the cost of developing AAA games. They're employing hundreds of people for multiple years, these games need to sell in the millions just to break even. It's frankly impressive that in 20-30 years the price of games has only increased about 20%, not even keeping pace with inflation, while also being about 500-1000% more expensive to make. You can save costs by streamlining the workflow, but this only works if you're making the same things over and over. Game development isn't an assembly line, it's creative work and the AAA industry is constantly trying to make things bigger and bigger. It's kind of like asking why do Marvel movies still have production budgets of 100-200 million when they've made so many. There isn't much opportunity to reduce the sheer labour required. You needs lots of people and they need to get paid. Ultimately the cost of games is arbitrary since whether they profit or not is based on total unit sales. If reducing the cost of games by 20% would yield a >20% increase in sales then it makes complete sense to do that. There are many cheap games like Minecraft that have made staggering amounts of money despite only costing 10-20 dollars, just through sheer volume. $60 is just the equilibrium the AAA industry has found works best.
