ive had situations where the door is locked and i didnt say anything because you expect the locked door to get the message across. most of the time i do give a verbal cue though. some people don't even knock they just go straight to grabbing the door.

This feels like a safe place so I thought I’d share my awkward bathroom story. I was like 13 or 14 and my family was taking a road trip. They pulled over to a gas station so I could shit. I go into the bathroom, lock the door, and starting shitting. It’s a pretty big bathroom with a single toilet in it. After about 5 minutes someone knocks on the door, I say “someone’s in here”. Once again they knock, I say “someone’s in here” louder this time. Then they start jiggling the handle, I basically yell “occupied”. They keep jiggling the handle for a few more seconds thinking that it’s locked and they can’t get in. Apparently all that jiggling of the handle loosened the lock and suddenly the door opens and I’m staring at two Hispanic dudes, maybe in their early 20’s. As awkward as this was I feel like the normal thing to do is to say “oh sorry boss” and shut the door. Nope. They stood there for a good 5 seconds while I was clearly annoyed, then they start pointing and laughing at me for another 5 seconds. For a full 10 seconds that door was open for everyone in the gas station to see me taking a shit. I said “close the door” and they did. But I can back up Rocco, sometimes saying that the bathroom is occupied doesn’t matter.

Okay, look, you say that about rattling bathroom doors open, but I cannot tell you the amount of times I have thought a bathroom was locked and the door had just been stuck. One time I was even waiting at a door thinking it was a locked single toilet. After like, half an hour I shoulder checked it open and it turned out to be a whole big bathroom with all the stalls and the sinks and stuff. It's a weird balance
