Juvenile bat squeaks while being petted: this is Jeddah

This is Jeddah. He loves to be tickled, petted and scratched. Look at that blissful face.
Jeddah is a Grey-Headed Flying-Fox.
I usually clip my videos quite short when it's all one behaviour being shown, but this bliss went on and on and I just couldn't bring myself to deprive you of any of the lengthy joy.
I particularly loved the yawny and sniffy bits about half way through. And I love the curl of the tongue as he yawns.
This bat was not releasable due to injuries. He is in care with a vaccinated and licensed bat carer.
This bat is not a pet. He was a baby hand raised for release, and became an education animal.
He is used to being handled. He actively solicits attention and cuddles.
There have been suggestions that this bat is terrified and the squeaks are not cute. This bat is in bliss and is able to get away from the carer at any time. He is choosing to be stroked. He solicits attention.
Video by Mandi Griffith. Thanks for the footage.
Thanks Mandi for the footage which is given in thanks for the continuing donations which help support the fruit costs for her bats.
Tolga Bat Hospital takes donations for Mandi.

Mention Megabattie or Meg in the PayPal message box and the money will find its way to Mandi
If no message box appears, please email Jenny to tell her that the money is for Mandi.
IMPORTANT: If you pay through the PayPal Giving Fund, can you please email Jenny with the AMOUNT DONATED and the name under which you have donated, OR just forward along the PP receipt. If you specify the amount donated, it makes it heaps easier for Jenny to find the donation.
The Giving Fund doesn’t charge any fees (so the bats get more money) but PP doesn’t itemise out the amount, they just send a total every month, and we don’t know if the money is for Tolga or for Megabattie.
Here’s Jenny’s email.

@@MegabattieI understand by a veterinarian. Rabies goes around approx every 7 years but I would be so careful with bats too and be vaccinated just to be on the safe side. I got bit by a bat by accidentally cornering him and not realizing he was in the corner I was in so he did what he was to do. Protect himself. I got a rabies shot right away.

Hi PKC; try checking out the orphan bat playlists on my channel - they're adorably cute and think their human is their mum. Rethink away; then maybe start watching of the rescue videos to see that they're not all cuddly, but they can be quite aggressive (just to give you a more balanced view). Meg Welcome to Megabattie, I put lots of information in the descriptions under the videos - so if you have questions, look for the answers there first. I also put the fate of the animal if I know it, at the time I put the video up. I may put updates there later if I find out what happened to the animal after it has left my care. There is also a Happy Outcomes playlist if you want to only watch videos where the bat survives; this is a real life channel and you get the good, the bad, the ugly and distressing, and even my oopsies. You can find further videos on an individual bat by searching in the YT search bar for Megabattie/and the name of the bat you want to follow. There is a community tab (like a mini Facebook page) on my channel - if you go to Megabattie home page, there is a menu bar across the top under the cover pic. Home, Videos, Playlists, Community, About. If you click on the community tab there are posts there where I can share pix and talk about some of the videos I put up and answer questions.

In the meantime Mandi was caring for him; he needed to be kept tame so he could be an effective education animal. He loved to climb onto her and demand cuddles; she was cleaning out the crud from the bottom of the aviary, and he climbed aboard and solicited cuddles and petting. It's healthy to be a bit wary around them since they can carry the rabies virus. I don't really fear them, but I respect their boundaries, like I would for any wild animal. One day, a young bat fell asleep on my chain link fence, right on the gate. I got to study him/her up close since the bat was sleeping very soundly, but I left it alone. At least the people who did this video gave that warning at the end.

Would humans still be able to make friends with other species if we didn't have fingers and opposable thumbs? Think about the first wolf who ever got petted, or a belly rub, and how foreign that sensation was. It had never experienced that before and would only ever experience it from humans. And what's the deal with petting anyway? Why do we instinctively try to pet other animals, whether it's a dog or a dolphin, and why are other animals so receptive to it, as if it's a natural thing? They don't try to pet us, after all. Anyhoo, things I think about...

It physically feels good and mentally it's a way to Express love or affection seeing as how animals dont have a language in the sense of spoken word. Many animals rub up against, lick, or groom their young and many with friends. Us primate types just dominate the pet game with our fingers and some animals are just dying to get a piece of that sweet sweet.... finger pettins? Lol. Other animals that dont like being petted are only envious of our hands and seek to destroy us as a means to eliminate the petting competition in Hope's of one day reclaiming the mantle of best petter, but their efforts are in vain because these sweet hands can also operarate firearms. The mantle shall not change...hands...

Why do we instinctively try to pet other animals? Because touch is physical sign of affection among humans. We find it comforting to touch and be touched. Certain tactile sensations are also deeply pleasurable and soothing. We also have an excessively broad visual template for 'baby.' Anything small, round, and soft, preferably with large eyes, is going to trigger the part of our brain designed for protecting and nurturing our young. That includes a *lot* of holding and petting.

I've had to help and rehab a few bats and various other small critters like hedgehogs, rock hyrax, giant cane rats, snakes, chameleons, and birds in my lifetime, living in Africa tends to put you directly amongst them and our houses and swimming pools are often a hazardous place for them. if I leave an oil pan uncovered over night in the garage sure as dammit there'll be a Beuchells bat half drowned in there the next morning, they think it's water. believe me when I say that bats are bats, like dogs are dogs, we don't really get many large fruit bat species in South Africa, but the little squishyfaced insectivores have colonies in almost every house's roof, and they bite like crazy if they feel threatened, just as a wild mouse or rat would. this little fruit bat is not stressed. as far as he can conceive his mom is grooming him. Internet hystericals need to chill

The benefits of having bats around far outweigh the risks. They eat mosquitoes by the truckload, pollinate certain food crops (like Avocados). The rabies thing gets blown out of proportion. That's a handful of individuals out of a population of thousands in most cases. It's true that you shouldn't handle them without protection, but that's the same with any animal. But most importantly... D'AAAAWWW!! So cuuuuuuute!

Just by looks they are indeed cute as cute can get, but they do carry some serious viruses, among them the recently infamous ebola, but this particular kind of fruit bat may not be a vector.
@Megabattie
@Megabattie 8 жыл бұрын
+RoarOfDamnation It has been shown that bats don't carry Ebola. The scientists jumped to the wrong conclusion. They haven't found any (African) bats who are carrying the virus. Bats in Australia can carry ABLV (Australian Bat Lyssavirus) which is a variant of rabies, and Hendra Virus. You can't catch Hendra from a bat, only from a sick horse infected (presumably) from a bat.

+RoarOfDamnation Yes the bats in Africa were persecuted as carriers of Ebola, when they weren't. People fired entire roost trees and burnt them alive. They also hunt and eat bats there, and bushmeat is one of the ways emerging viruses spill over into the human population. Sad

+Megabattie Surely saying "when they weren't" is not strictly correct, it has been proven that some species of bat carry the Ebola virus without symptoms. Making them carriers.

I've just watched a few short animal videos. A magpie, two ring-neck parrots, a polar bear, a baby bat, a baby owl --they all crave human touch. I am in awe of how trusting they can be though they've been born to live in the wild, independent of us. There is such innocence and honesty in these creatures, and such appreciation for a little belly rub or a head scratch. They close their eyes in ecstasy, make little soothing sounds--they let you know. They communicate. There is more in nature than we will ever begin to know. I am in awe.

I actually found a bat once, floating in a pool. I fished it out, dried i off, fed it for a whole day, and left it in a dark place to rest. The next day I took it out, it saw on my finger, turned around, squeaked and flew off. Didn't scratch or bite even once, and was one of the most adorable things I ever saw.

This bat is a Flying-Fox - they don't have echolocation - they navigate entirely by sight. They have large eyes and very good low light vision so they can find their fruit and blossom.

Hi David; are you new to my channel? If so, I recommend the orphan bat playlists for a lot of interaction. Welcome to Megabattie, There are lots more videos up, including a lot of baby videos where I interact with the very socially intelligent babies, and watch them grow up and into their huge feet and awkwardly folding wings. I put lots of information in the descriptions under the videos - so if you have questions, look for the answers there first. Meg

those animals are fantastic, they are the only mammals that actually do FLY (meaning being able to rise up in the air)and not just glide in the air (only able to maintain a same altitude or get lower). Just for that, they need to be saved and cherished at all cost.

that is completely incorrect ThatAussieGamer. Their population is dropping at about 7% per year and the Grey-Headed and Spectacled Flying-Foxes are listed as vulnerable to extinction. The aren't being culled though there are dispersals going on. The population is highly mobile and moves around into historical colonies - this means they go back to what they consider prime real estate when they're passing through the area. They follow the flowering of eucalypt and hardwoods. They are the sole pollinators of some night flowering hardwoods. They are responsible for the health and biodiversity of our rainforests. I admit they are pests in certain areas, and that would be because we keep chopping down their habitat, food trees and corridors. The councils also release land next to historical colonies if they don't use the colony for a few years. When people build houses there and the colony returns - the people say - BUT WE WERE HERE FIRST!. There are a lot of issues, but it's illegal to cull flying-foxes. Some orchardists have permits to shoot limited numbers, which is both cruel and ultimately unsuccessful in the overall scheme of things. We have only ourselves to blame for the situation.
@Mazamune
@Mazamune 7 жыл бұрын
As most of the times and like with many many other animals and i am not australian nor lives any way near Australia but i can only imagine this, those bats may be considered as "pest" only because HUMANS step over their natural habitats. We humans tend to step over other animals habitats without caring much and i find this quite horrible. Why can't we live in harmony with other pacific animals like that ??

Mazamune and it's saddens me that several people from where I come from think that bats are birds... I ask them, how so ? Coz they can fly and birds fly too 🤦🏻‍♂️🤦🏻‍♂️🤦🏻‍♂️ Then I ask what about ostriches, penguins and all those other flightless birds ? They say, well they are birds to coz they have feathers and beaks and they lay shelled eggs like birds and all that. Then I ask, do bats have beaks and feathers ? Do bats lay eggs ? They say, no, bat bats fly so they are birds Then I ask, is a butterfly a bird ? They say, no it's an insect Then i ask, but butterflies fly too don't they ? Then say, yes but they don't resemble birds ? Then I ask, then in what angle does a bat resemble birds ? They say, they can fly so they are birds Yes people can be very dumb 🤦🏻‍♂️ And I did get into debates with several people in regards to whether bats are birds or not In the end, They are obviously mammals 😂😂😂 and the only ones that can fly
