What is a megacity?
A megacity, as defined by the United Nations, is a city with more than 10 million inhabitants. Other definitions use thresholds between five and eight million. Often, cities are confused with metropolitan areas, like "Metro Manila" with 25 million people, while the city of Manila has under two million. Our ranking lists populations of actual cities with over five million inhabitants, excluding combined metropolitan regions or higher-level government districts.
