Its more of a fact that most of the equipment is more digital than the raw sound they used to have. Check out bands like Evile and Havok, or not even going that far, check out Exodus and pay atention to Gary Holt's tone.

Yea, I dont exactly know the technical stuff, but I can clearly notice that all the older footage of any bands, it has better sound production. These days, the double bass sounds like a typewriter and guitar tone sounds so thin with no depth.
