Wow! Thanks for the insight, I had no idea it was his reaction to Cliff's death. Definitely gives it a new meaning to me now. I remember very clearly hearing about the bus crash. But then I heard Blackened for the first time and I realized they were marching on and were going to be ok.

C'mon y'all, this album is, in my mind, contrary to the popular opinion, the overlooked Megadeth's magnum opus. The best line-up (Jeff Young & Chuck Behler), one of the best productions in metal history, Dave's drug fuelled madness and anxiety resulted in this absolute masterpiece. Also Brad & Lex, maybe you should try "MARY JANE" from the same album. It is, unbelievably, even better than this one, beautiful, crazy and haunting and will stay with you forever. Thank you for this reaction guys.

I'd have to go with the Menza/Friedman line up for best line up. However this album I once heard referred to as "The Megadeth fan's album." The rest are more for the masses but this one's for hardcore Megadeth fans. @@ThomasTallant I prefer the sound of the original. For one, it is the album/sound I remember best and which elicits the memories. Also, I didn't really like how they changed some of the arrangements in the remastered version. I know, Dave even said in the interview on that Metal Shop episode, that he wanted the sound of a car radio come on and KISS Detroit Rock City on the radio, but the mixing for it wasn't available, or didn't have the time (can't remember what the excuse was exactly). However, I prefer how the original sounds without that effect. I just always like the "garage" band feel to the poor recording quality of the original.

Song from the album So far, So Good, So What. from 1988, actually the third album in Megadeth's discography. Lex, you have to keep in mind that bands might change their sound from album to album or within years, so it is difficult to say that they sound a certain way, because they might surprise you. Megadeth, has had a lot of changes in their sound throughout the years, but you can still identify their main essence in their sound, despite the changes.

This song was written about Metallica bassist Cliff Burton, who was killed in a tour bus crash in 1986. Dave Mustaine of Megadeth had played w/ Cliff Burton in Metallica from early-to-mid 1983, before he was fired and sent back to Los Angeles on a Greyhound bus - his 'darkest hour' ... Mustaine hated the members of Metallica and vowed revenge w/ a new band, which became Megadeth. However, when news came to Mustaine in the fall of 1986 of Burton's death while Megadeth were on tour, he was devastated... he immediately wrote the lyrics and music as an 'eulogy' to Cliff Burton... Later, Megadeth did deliver some metal 'breakup songs' for sure - 'Trust' ... 'Almost honest' ... '1000 times goodbye'... 'The hardest part of letting go... Sealed with a kiss'... 🔥🔥🤘🤘

Great song choice! Old Megadeth which I like the best. I’ve listened to this song hundreds of times. It is simply awesome. It is one of their best songs of all time (I think). Dave wrote this song shortly after hearing of Cliff Burton’s death (Metallica bass player). It was not a break up song, although it very much sounds like it. Dave also had said he went right out to buy heroin after hearing of this friend’s death second-hand which was very hurtful. Lots of dark emotions put into this song. Keep rocking Lexi \m/

Dave Mustaine wrote most of this song in just one sitting after learning that bass player Cliff Burton had died in a tour bus accident while traveling with Metallica on their Master of Puppets tour. While he was a member of Metallica from 1981-1983, Mustaine became good friends with Burton; he fondly recalls driving to practice, listening to Lynyrd Skynyrd, and smoking pot with him. Mustaine says that when he heard the news, he headed straight to downtown Los Angeles, where he bought heroin. He began crying, and through the tears came up with "In My Darkest Hour." Burton's death was the inspiration for this song, but the lyrics are not directly about him, as the song is about remaining true to your friends and being there in their time of need. Mustaine didn't get a lot of support from his family, and also felt betrayed by Metallica when they kicked him out of the band. Reflecting on the song, Mustaine explained that he treasures his relationship with his fans, who have shown him the kind of support he didn't get as a kid. The song doesn't have a happy ending, but many Megadeth fans found it very helpful in getting them through difficult times, since it can be comforting to know that others have been through it.

This is INDEED a breakup song! In fact, this song, along with ‘Tornado Of Souls’, got me through the worst of my divorce. This song’s first movement seems to paint a picture of a man immobilised by depression and misery, awaiting death. In the second movement, I can feel our protagonist tearing through centuries of petrification , gouging his way to the surface, until he finally breathes fresh air again. This song was particularly helpful in aiding my recovery from my failed marriage. We were one of those rare couples that were so mad for each other they can’t not tear each other to shreds with overprotectiveness and jealousy. It didn’t help that we were both incredibly young, yet we’d both been through some nightmares already in our lives…leading us to believe we were ready to take on much greater challenges than those for which we were ACTUALLY prepared.

Yup...I always took it as a "break up" song...with a bit of nastiness to it lol...(BIG departure from Gregg Khin's "break up" song)

Yes,this song was written after Cliff Burton died, but unless he and Cliff were in an intimate relationship,i would say this is about an "Ex- girlfriend!" If this is really about Cliff Burton, then i need consider not being a fan of Megadeth anymore lol

You need a video with lyrics. This song is a SUICIDE LETTER to a shitty partner.

Hahahahaha. This is Megadeth's Taylor Swift song!!! I've always loved this song, and this is my favorite Megadeth album, but that is a hilarious, accurate take, lol.

Ohh yeah, the older Megadeth sound... Remastering doesn't do it justice either. Another good example of this I would recommend is _Def Leppard -Lady Strange_

The death of Dave's friend and fellow band member when he was in Metallica, Cliff Burton, was the inspiration for the song.

Brilliant song choice. That album was a huge transition for Megadeth. The drummer Chuck Behler was a friend of mine from back in Detroit, he was always cool to people that enjoyed his music and the younger people at his shows.

Yes, Metal songs do break-up/bad ex songs too!! LMAO This is killer though, she never had his back, always had to be right, and just was a cold hearted snake. We've all been there. Regardless to genre!

Dave was so fucked up high when he created this song lol! He had the gall to claim it was dedicated to Cliff Burton, when the lyrics obviously have nothing to do with Cliff. Great song though!

Metal break up songs allows you to vent your anger instead of making you feel sorry for yourself. It's a complete opposite of pop or slow songs. Not that this is a break up song, but it could be used as such. You want to hear a completely different sound of Megadeath, try PROMISE.
