This is a video about every amazing megafauna species that lived in South America in 10.000 B.C.
Pleistocene South America was a place where humans would've been competing with and hunting giant predators and prey! It details every extinct megafauna species that was present and all the megafaunal animals that are still in South America today that once lived alongside those Pleistocene giants.
Prehistoric animals that lived with humans!

Ground sloths are probably the coolest extinct animals. There's like nothing comparable to them in modern times

I thought the terror bird was the largest in south America during that time. Very interesting though. Fascinating stuff.

@@1legend517 Yeah the terror birds were much larger than the Rhea but they went extinct much earlier than 10,000 B.C., it's thought they went extinct around 96,000 years ago 😊 Thank you, glad you enjoyed the video 😎

@@Eco-Nerd Oh wow thanks for that. I didn't realise that I thought they went extinct more recently. That does that does make sense given they weren't in any of the indigenous rock/cave art. Interesting.

1:26 that's not a glyptodon though, it's a speculative ankylosaur from the book "The new dinosaurs" by Dougal Dixon

@EcologyNerd, Do you think introducing elephants to parts of South America to replace their extinct relatives would be a great idea?
@Eco-Nerd

@@arkprice79 Yeah I think it would actually be really beneficial! There have been some studies done on the matter

@Eco-Nerd It sounds really good, but wouldn't elephants compete with native herbivores and cause conflict with farmers by eating their crops? P.S. we have hippos in Colombia, which are causing lots of problems through competition with native species and causing toxic algue blooms through their dung
@Eco-Nerd
@Eco-Nerd 3 күн бұрын
@@arkprice79 They likely wouldn't provide a damaging amount of competition and would potentially benefit other herbivores in a lot of ways (as they do in Africa and Asia), in the grand scheme of things elephantids are only recently extinct in South America, and some of their actions are missed. They would definitely do damage to farmers crops but that's a human matter not so much a matter of ecology. Yeah hippos are quite damaging in South America but they have a completely different ecology than any South American animal in the present or recent past

You have interesting video's! There is nothing else like it. If you think about it there are so few big animals in South America. But they were there thousands of years ago. Shame they are al gone. Now you have plains with big termite hills.

You don't mention the lesser, or Darwin's rhea, two of whose subspecies are sometimes considered a third species, the puna rhea. There is also the dire rhea (JUST KIDDING!!)

@@angreagach 🤣 I've heard of the dire rhea alright, think they're found on every continent though 😂😂 Yeah none of the rheas are technically megafauna so I just gave the rhea a quick mention! Amazing animals though 😊

So much lost because of humans. And now were in a mass extinction event (this will include us). Can we have an evolution of consciousness? Can we think past captalism? The purpose of history is to teach us to avoid the mistakes of the past.
