Fun (I think)fact: water and loose sediment is actually a fantastic place for stuff to fossilize, and there have been many fossils found in bodies of water, but the reason sharks and such are uncommon is because their skeletons are cartilage, not bone, and cartilage very rarely fossilizes

So, the difference between livyatan and leviathan is mostly pronunciation, as the spelling in Hebrew is the same. לִוְיָתָן, or Livyatan is about right for modern Hebrew, but ancient Hebrew it would be more like Liwyathan. The reason it gets to Leviathan in modern English is because it detoured from Hebrew into Latin before making it's way into English.
@aaaaaa-gq3dv Жыл бұрын
I wanna point out that she's still saying it wrong (assuming you're supposed to say it the way you say it in Hebrew, I'm just a Hebrew speaker not a biologist lol)... She's just changing "th" to "t" but that's not the only difference. She's pronouncing it "leviatan" when it should be pronounced exactly how you write it - livyatan. Basically, say "liv". Then say "yatan". Now say both of these fast right after each other like it's one word and you pretty much got it.

Thus the whiteboards hahahaha

"Megalodon had amazing senses that they could use to hunt their prey. They had an incredibly sensitive sense of smell along with great vision and hearing. Moreover, they can detect electrical fields coming from prey via the ampullae of Lorenzini. Livyatan’s senses were not as good. They used echolocation to find prey and communicate with others, and they had good hearing. However, their senses of taste and smell were thought to be poor."

I'm fully on camp Livyathan here. Just look at Orcas vs Great Whites today. And speaking of teeth, if you thought Meg tooth the size of your palm is impressive, Livyathan teeth are the biggest in proportion to any animal ever. The size of your forearm.
@XxXSinkerXxX Жыл бұрын
My money is on the Meg. Modern great whites weigh a third of a Orca lol, on top of that Orcas hunt in packs, of course the way smaller animal gets bodied. So this comparison doesnt really fly, if we assume both Livyatan and the Meg are of equal size here. A confrontation would be much closer, especially if Livyatan wasnt a pack hunter. Megalodons primary food source seems to have been whales, so obviously they had some sort of attack strategy against those animals. In recent years, sharks have been filmed hunting and killing whale calfs of a larger size than their own. They bite into the top of the whales fluke and let them bleed out. After the animal is weakened the shark comes back closer and trys to actively push the whales blowhole under water to drown the animal. So it would be possible that Meg used a similar approach, it makes a lot of sense: bite the tail fin, immobilise the whale as well as inflicting large blood loss through the severed artery, come back after the it is weaker and drown it by pushing its body down. The shark has the big advatage of not needing to breath air, it can just fuck off into the depths if it landed a good bite first, or to evade the Livytan entirely. Meg could also rush at it from below as a first strike, like white sharks attack seals. I dont think a collision of hundreds of razor sharp teeth with 100.000 lbs of bodyweight behind them ends favourably for any animal.
@MaliciousMollusc Жыл бұрын
@XxXSinkerXxX Livyatan has ranged weaponry (sonic attack), which is absolutely deadly underwater. Also, long-range radar. They know how to set up team combos, and they know how to use Jujitsu against shark species (tonic immobility). Basically, it is like 2 humans with the same weight and size, but 1 knows Jujitsu and has a sonic weapon. (And can hear you coming....also, there's at least 10 of them at all times). "Killing whale calfs" Non-predatory whales, lol. It's always been that way with sharks, even Meg. They capitalised smurfing non-predatory whales. Never heard them attacking Sperm whale or Orca pods tho 😂
@XxXSinkerXxX Жыл бұрын
@@MaliciousMollusc I brought up the whale hunting as an example of how sharks typically would attack and that they actually attack whales in todays oceans. Of course they attacked calfs, no predatory shark on the planet is big enough to hunt adult whales, what a stupid point, lmao . Do Orcas or Spermwhales actively use a kind of "Sonic attack" to attack their prey? No, apparantly thats a myth. The sound waves they send out were studied and didnt show any sign of hurting or even disorienting the fish/ squids. Were Livyatan group hunters? We cant know for sure, seems unlikely though, simply because of their massive size. Sperm whales are solitary hunters as well. Id like to see any animal try to use tonic immobility on 100.000 lbs of shark. Orcas today have an insane weight AND numbers advantage when dealing with great whites, so tonic immobility can be exploited. But mass moves mass and 100.000 or so lbs on both sides makes this way more unlikely to have happened. You cant just throw this stuff out there and expect it to magicly "win" the argument for you. Im still betting on the Meg. A little bit of a surprise element by attacking from below and its inevitable, really.

I got schooled that it is actually [leev+yatan] not [livy+atan]. Though I kinda love the irony that while I (and every other non-Hebrew speaker) wasn't mispronouncing Leviathan because it is Livyatan, we mispronounced Livyatan because we projected the syllabic emphasis from the latinised form back on to the original hebrew word!
