For those of you are who are younger - This movie will be trashed publicly for the next few weeks, forgotten, revived on the underground film circuit - become a cult classic that everyone pretended they always liked, then in about 20 years it will be re-made by another director to critical acclaim and box office indifference. Moral of the story: watch it yourselves and see if you like it: screw everyone else.

Exactly my thoughts. I think this looks like an ambitious disaster (not unlike the original cut of Caligula perhaps) but I am going to go in with an open mind and see if it resonates with me. If it does, then all the better for it!

I don't care if this movie sucks, or bombs, I'm just amazed that Coppola at age 85 and after over a decade of silence, has finally brought to the screen a wildly ambitious concept he first dreamed up in 1977 and entirely funded it himself, selling part of his winery to do so. Like, holy shit. Hollywood needs more directors like him.

This movie was extremely fun to see in theatres and a truly one-of-a-king experience. Don't listen to the critics and the movie nerds who expect movies to have all the answers to life's hardest questions. It's sincere, bold, hilarious, psychedelic, and doesn't take itself too seriously. Best of all, it doesn't muddy its themes in 'nuance' to make it feel profound. Agree. But being 'original' is not quite enough--you also have to have a cohesive point/perspective/drive, and according to all the reviews this doesn't have that (and that's being nice....one UK Critic said it was one of THE worst films he has EVER seen.) Coppola was always, to be fair, hot & cold in his output. As with the unbearable 'Babylon" ,this may well be yet another over-the-top bloated pretence.

Laughter ensued. I took a chance on Megalopolis and I have no regrets. Make no mistake: it's a piece of shit. Better to have art that is thought-provoking, than not. Back when, Dante Alighieri wrote the Divine Comedy, now we have movies like the Matrix, movies that show us the horrors of war, movies like Idiocracy, and musical artists like Rage Against the Machine and the Gorillaz. Art totally has a place in shaping culture, but ppl still have to hold themselves accountable. We conduct all this science, develop technology, but the most productive science has not been done: social engineering + new economics. We have not yet found a way to reward self-sufficiency. Right now, our consumerist economy will not allow it. Until we find that better way, we will be stuck in competition instead of embracing cooperation. At least the internet makes much info available. You can always be a smart consumer, and don't watch it. Don't enrich the ppl you don't want to. That's why I don't watch Marvel movies: I hate seeing so many millions go down the drain for that "art", but art is subjective, and some ppl will like it. Some movies flop. For every successful movie, there are hundreds of thousands of artists just doing their thing, and in some cases, virtually no one buys their art. But without art, where would we be? Think of a world without architecture, every structure would be samey and utilitarian. Architecture is hardly directly political, yet it attracts ppl to grow communities. I was just in Caorle, Italy: it looks like paradise. The large stones on the shore could've been utilitarian, but since sculptors made them beautiful, ppl there spend more time outside and pursue their romantic interests by the shore. Art shapes our lives in many ways. Ppl can be depressed, but be uplifted by music and comedy. It is very important. Comedy oft tells us all that is wrong, and makes us laugh at our own collective cognitive dissonance. The fact we need to eat and mate means we all have impulses that need satisfying for survival. Art is an impulse to make things extraordinary, but ppl have different ideas about what is extraordinary. Ppl have different ideas of what it means to be successful and happy.

The critics and nay-sayers are straight-buggin' here. I watched this movie last night after much deliberation. Needless to say, I was enthralled throughout. The majority of complaints claim this movie is incoherent and pretentious trash. Whilst there are abstract elements to it, the narrative is straightforward; not difficult to grasp at all. As far as it being "pretentious," well, most people that try to enjoy that which is within the artistic domain purely for the sake of entertainment will deem anything challenging (in any manner) as pretentious. Personally, I applaud this film for having equal parts style and substance. I am grateful to have seen it in IMAX, and will certainly purchase on bluray.

I saw it yesterday. It's an insanely pretentious movie that tries way too hard to overcomplicate a very basic plotline
