There are a lot of movies audiences and critics have been wrong about. Sometimes audiences and critics just aren't ready for something. Sometimes the marketing does the movie in. People go in expecting one movie but they are delivered a completely different movie and have a negative response to it.

Fight Club is one of the best examples of movie that contradicted critics in time. They actually did right that thing with quoting the bad reviews. It was well received by critics [91% on Rotten Tomatoes] and the audience who saw it so wasn't really 'underrated' but it certainly flew under the radar for most [I only saw it when I picked up the DVD]. It was only made after Shane Black's success with 'Iron Man 3' as a thrown back 'Lethal Weapon' esq movie was always going to be a hard sell in 2016 but making it a summer release [against 'Captain American: Civil War'] was such a short sighted move. Given it bombed there is no way they'd do a sequel but it's a shame it never happened [there was talk of doing a TV spin off with new actors but nothing came of it].

I gotta give props where’s its due, in an age where attention span is at an all time low and the market being oversaturated with content, trying to make something original with very little mass appeal is daring af. From the trailer alone you can tell there's no solid interesting premise. Here's one off the top of my head; A city where you can't speak a lie. That's how the guy plans to form a Utopia. He eliminates almost all crimes. You 100% know everyone is telling you the truth. But then how would that impact relationships, businesses, religion, every aspect of society and THEN how would that society interact with other societies that bound by such restrictions on mis/disinformation. Instead you just know this movie was gonna be some artsy vague as fuck weak ass metaphor with nothing actually interesting happening on the screen.

Seeing Francis Fords Coppola's Megalopolis: A Fable (2024) yesterday brought me back to those classic style of the Epics of old. Starting with Osvaldo Golijov score for the film. He looked to Miklós Rózsa's score for Ben-Hur (1959) to establish the films grandeur setting. That being said about the films music score. It was a trippy, but fascinating watch and would love to own on Dvd some day. Francis to me delivered on what he made and i was entertained. Now given the structure of the film and pacing. Yes, a lot people are not gonna like this film very much. Though i gotta give it to him on self financing this awesome Epic. Now, i did look into this films history long before going to see it. To give me better understanding of the film and wow. The efforts i can say were incredible based on how much went into this one.

I fully agree, it was a visually stunning fairytail with great actors, but it was trimmed down just way too much. It felt as if Coppola had too much to say, but didn't want to be boring, so he tells his plot points but footage conveying some of these points has been removed. I still want to see it again, but maybe on a streaming platform so I can stop and rewind. Still 8.5/10 from me.

I think you just described a depiction of current times. You can see the forces at first, and then it exponentially speeds up in a chaotic end. It may not be the cinematic standard, but it may be an accurate portrayal of an end of times. I will see this, based on your review.

In early 1982 I drove 40 minute to a theater that was showing "One From The Heart". As I remember, they showed the movie in the 1.37 ratio. I ewed and awed over the then state-of-the-art techniques. When the curtain closed and the lights came up I thought "This movie sucked." So in 2024 I go to my nearby theater and see "Megalopolis". I ewed and awed over the state-of-the-art visuals. When the lights came up I said "It was okay." It wasn't the bomb "One from the Heart" was, but it won't rank up there with "The Godfather" or "Apocalypse Now" either. But am I glad he made it? You're damn right. I hope more famous directors get to make their passion projects. BTW, I still think "Tucker" was one of Coppola's best. I felt like I was one of the very few who bothered to see it in the theater. But keep in mind at the time "Tucker" was released, there was this other movie released at the same time called "The Last Temptation of Christ". Three guesses over which one got more attention. But that seems to be the story of Coppola's life. Shesh.

At the end of the day, it is art. It occupies that space where you can look at it from many different angles, and it may not be the best for entertainment, but it has value. Not everyone will appreciate that, but for me it sure beats something like Babylon which is literally unwatchable. I mean I gave it a good shot, maybe an hour of my time and I was done. Megalopolis got a bit slow at times, but I sat until the credits rolled and I felt like it was time well spent.
