I hate the narrative of “cinephiles will love it” or “it’s unconventional that’s why you don’t like it” I assure you, I understood the movie. I get what it was trying to say. But it was deeply flawed in execution. Kinda reminds me of when my sister said CATS was good “because it has a theme” You can understand a movie and still hate it.

I watched it last night and I was really disappointed. It was like a much shittier version of Synecdoche, New York. I really love that movie because of how personal and vulnerable it is, but this movie felt really boring and generic. It's about civilization but it doesn't feel like it actually says anything about that subject. It's weird how the poor people are treated like the bad guys and it's strange that Ceaser never at all asks how his city will actually benefit the world. He literally gives his final speech in front of a slum with earnest music playing and I'm just like what's going on? The city itself also felt really uninspired. All UTOPIA amounted too are curvy buildings and airport auto walkers made of magic.

@@BobtheX while I’m more at peace about Caesar’s vision being untold, I agree. On the point of the poor, someone on letterboxd described it as something along the lines of “Coppola is equally as mad about Trump and BLM/Me Too without understanding either” and I saw that too. A big problem of mine is that we are told quite a bit about Caesar from other characters without much characterization otherwise. When combined with the kinda obvious self-insert aspects of this film, it’s not the best look. Every time I heard a character call Caesar a ‘genius’ I thought of the ads calling FFC one. The movie looked terrible, the acting was strange, the dialogue even worse. I struggle to think of much I liked about it. Also bothered by how poorly the pieces fit together, there were clearly things he expected us to understand/know (maybe lost in editing?) that we just couldn’t. The people praising this film all seem to be saying “I’m glad this exists” or “there will never be something like this again”. I don’t see FFC having hundreds of of millions to throw away to make this as a good thing because he is likely the *only* creator who has that opportunity. It makes me sad. What masterpieces are we missing out on because cheaper movies can’t get funded?

I'm glad FCC was able to make the movie he wanted to, but like you said, I wish that movie was a better showcase of what unfiltered artistic vision can get you. He needed a couple more script drafts and a better editor at his side.

I didn't *hate* it, but I wholeheartedly agree If the whole idea is "striving for perfection is perfection, and maybe we'll never have a utopia but merely the conversation is enough"... then maybe have that conversation? Is it not incredibly hypocritical to have every single character either come directly from means, or at least in close proximity to it? Not to mention the only characters actually involved in that premise were Cesar, the mayor, and his daughter, but it's like the "people" have to be handled, talked about/over but never talked to. The only people to hold the elites accountable is other elites, not a single frame dedicated to a common person's perspective. It seemed more like he wanted to actualize the visuals he saw in his head, and the premise was inserted afterwards because the movie needed one.

The film seems like it wants to be a critique of leaving a single powerful individual to solve all the problems, but at the same time that's what actually happens in the film. Caesar wants to make his town. All of the obsticles in his way (the people he dehouses, the mayor's criticism, his cousin, the plot to frame him with fake footage) for the most part just bounce off him with minimal input from him. Then, at the end, he's made his town. If it wasn't for the opening quote telling the audience directly this is supposed to be a critique of powerful people I'd really struggle to read it as anything other than saying rich powerful individuals are great.

If a man is willing to spend his own money to make it, you know he's not going to compromise his vision and that makes it a rare breed that deserves attention. I Work at a theater and go to movies about once a week. This was one of the worst films I've seen in years . The CGI looked like it was from 2001. Nathalie Emmanuel's acting had literally no emotion at all. If I wasn't with my friends I would have walked out in the first 45 minutes and I've only walked out of 2 films in my life.

nathalie emmanuel was pretty bad. it’s funny because she wasn’t a terrible actor, it’s just everyone else is really over-the-top, and she’s just playing a “normal” character. it takes you of the film is all. i still really liked it. i thought it was visually amazing. some excellent shots. the story was a mess. but it did feel like it was all metaphors, and i’m not sure it’s exact message, but it definitely came across as art.

Coppola With Steven Spielberg, Martin Scorsese, George Lucas and Brian De Palma use to be Hollywood Renegates in the 70s, for how much their ideas were agaist the hollywood structure. And while Scorsese is still doing strong (even though he barelly gets an award), Spielberg and De Palma still working but not doing that great like they use to be, Lucas and Coppola suffer a severe creative stroke in wich they became too overshadow by their own sucesses (star wars and the godfather) as well as them beeing too obsess with their ambitious ideas (the prequels and apocalipse now) that they barelly find work anymore.

Most people - including filmmakers - are not educated to watch arthouse films. You need to watch some Tarkovsky, Fellini, Wajda, Godard, Antonioni and Fassbinder to get a feeling for films that are not built around conventional narrative structures and genre tropes. You can't be a life-long Taylor Swift fan and go to a Jazz gig and expect to comprehend the musical values on display. It's a totally different universe that requires a pre-existing knowledge base.

I honestly admire filmmakers like Coppola who make the films they want to make, not because of their profitability or award potential, but because they just have a story they want to tell. That's a true artist. I also know that only filmmakers who are making small low budget indie film, or incredibly successful directors with clout and money can, or even want to do this. That's one of the reasons I champion all the new technology that is making the tools of the craft available to anyone no matter how much the hacks and industry shills whine about their "jobs". Pretty much everybody does have a story to tell, but until very recently not everybody had the means to tell it.

I'm a big fan of Richard Kelley's sci-fi movie Southland Tales, with Dwayne Johnson. Is the movie a mess? Yeah, it is. Does it have some bad performances in it? Sure...particularly from The Rock. Do I love it anyway? Hell, yeah. It's got so many great ideas, is so determined to be one-of-a-kind, and reaches so high in the sky that I forgive its schizophrenic tendencies (particularly with the FAR superior Cannes Cut). That's kind of the sort of film I'm hoping for with Megalopolis.

Just saw this movie, and while I was confused on where the plot was going, it made sure to be entertaining all the way through. It had my curiosity and attention, and while I couldn't really explain the movie well to anyone, I do know that the enjoyment was there from start to finish.

I watched the movie today and then started looking for reviews to understand the hate. You review nailed exactly what I was thinking about it. It's actually not bad and people are blowing the hate out of proportions unjustifiably. Although it's not perfect or even great but it's certainly worth watching. It's a different kind of movie experience and I ended up giving it a 7/10.

I LOVE your take! That's pretty much how I felt about it. I enjoyed it quite a bit when I saw it in the cinema, a lot more than I thought I would after seeing all the hate and the memes. Its messy, very clumsy at times, but the fact that it exists in all its madness made me happy. I also agree with you in that it is neither a "good" or "bad" movie lol. It's a lot of things and a huge spectacle

I feckin LOVED it. I was glued to my seat the entire time despite having to pee for the last hour. I had so much fun. I never knew what was coming next. People seem mad that the movie was ‘up its own ass’ I was just glad it didn’t have ‘a stick up its ass!’ It’s a fun kind of pretentious where all the actors are having a wonderful time. I have not been this entertained in the theater since Everything Everywhere All At Once.
