To jump ahead of some more Giancarlo pronunciation comments - while I still didn't technically get the pronunciation 100% right on his last name (the first 'o' should be long and not short), I am attempting to pronounce it as he himself says it, and not how I have been pronouncing it. Much like Zoe Saldaña, I respect that he would prefer a pronunciation closer to his last name's origin, even if it has traditionally been pronounced differently. kzbin.info/www/bejne/b3WVaWCObKeGnac

I think the reason why we hear your pronunciation of Esposito as strange is because the English tendency is to emphasize the second to last syllable. Thus we apply it to non-English names, like Hiroshima, which most of us would say "Hero-SHEE-ma" but the correct Japanese pronunciation is more like "HERO-shma' with a little bit emphasis on the RO but not so much.

I should note the vestal virgin subplot is part of the historical story Coppola is adapting. Cesar Catalina is Lucius Sergius Catilina, a 1st century BC politician who opposed Cicero. He was accused of murdering his first wife to marry the consul's daughter and separately was charged by Publius Clodius Pulcher (just Clodius in the film) with violating a vestal virgin. In reality Catalina, not Clodius, led the mob to overthrow the senate, and Crassus revealed the plot rather than bankrolling Catalina. Cesar also argues at one point for debt forgiveness, which is a real policy the historical Catalina endorsed.

In a recent Videoclub episode in Paris, Coppola partially explained why he did this movie. He was inspired by Jacques Tati who self financed his last movie Parade, which was both a box office disaster and destroyed by critics. Yet he thinks people now find Parade to be a masterpiece (I found very little proof of that, even in France). Tati lived his later years in complete poverty as a result, sleeping in friends' and fans' homes. It seems like Coppola likes this fantasy of the artist sacrificing everything for art, and thinks this movie will be judged a masterpiece in 30 years.

And conveniently never add or forget, that for a project that is 120+ million dollars it shouldn't really be anything to praise as so many other brilliant films have done so much more with just a fraction on that! Look at Joker 2 it's complete garbage (too me) and its the 1ST THINGS many reviewers say about, before they run out if excuses and admit how bad it is... but it was 200 million while the first one something like 40 million, and anyone would be a dam lier if they say there is even 100 million worth difference in "how the movie looks". It such a low bar for something so expensive because even if the Director/Writer's are a mess, with that much money you can hire the best people for these other parts of the project AND THEY WILL DELIVER THE BEST! They have nothing to do with the other 60-70% of the film.

Then I began understanding what was happening and finally I not only appreciated but loved all of the metaphor and allegory of the film. Within the medium of film Copolla told a story of the ages in some truly masterful moments of cinema. parts were a bit messy, and maybe some of the metaphors like the time mechanics don't really play well or you just don't care. The thing that tipped the film into a favorite for me was when he describes how all artist play with, control and seaze time in their own fashion, in their own way. For an old man recollecting on their place in history through a medium which freezes that history so succintly for future generations it was so very heartwarming to see a beautiful vision come to life. And unlike Civil War show a more A-Political view of our world and our place in it.

The film also had some extremely deep and obscure references to Roman Emperors and Greek Philosophers that you'd have to be an expert to understand them all, but even than the film as a whole would still be a mess. For example, I think the whole stopping time thing was supposed to be referencing Plato's ideal society and when I mean obscure references, I mean like how when Clodio is at the immigrants protest it's a reference to the Lyon Tablet which is a bronze tablet found that has a speech by Emperor Claudius engraved into it

Not for me. I didn't feel the film took itself seriously, or at the very least it was a pretentious mess made by a director who's out of time and pace. I don't care when the writing started, but 25 years after the masterpiece that is The Matrix, that Megamess or whatever is presented to us as a finished product? Nooo. I walked out.

He was a bit inconsistent, Julia Cicero is almost normal. Claudette, Claudine, Clodia and Clodio Pulcher seem to be from a Tintin parody. While Vesta Sweetwater must be a pseudonym for someone who acts in fetish films. Nush Berman must have come from a scribbled note that someone could not quite read.

I cant be the only one who thought Jon Voight's character was very reminiscent of the rapidly-aging, bumbling, mumbling Joe Biden. I'm not even trying to bring politics into this; I was just truly reminded of Old Joe in every Crassus scene.

This movie seemingly draws its inspiration from the fall of the Roman Republic. It is helpful if you know about the people and politics of the Cataline Conspiracy of 63 BCE. Many of the characters draw on the motivations and actions of those people, particularly the role of Publius Clodius Pulcher played by Shia LaBoeuf.
