Restoring the Landscape: Komatsu D275 and Caterpillar D9R Bulldozers at Work in an Old Quarry
In today’s video, we’re watching the incredible process of restoring an old quarry, as powerful bulldozers reshape the landscape. With Komatsu D275 and Caterpillar D9R bulldozers in action, the goal is to move and spread large amounts of material, gradually pushing it down the hill to create a smoother, more natural terrain.
Komatsu D275: Built for Heavy-Duty Earthmoving
The Komatsu D275 is a large, powerful bulldozer designed for demanding earthmoving tasks. This machine is a popular choice for heavy projects like quarry restoration, where pushing, leveling, and spreading large volumes of material is essential.
Engine Power: The Komatsu D275 is equipped with a powerful Komatsu SA12V140E engine that delivers approximately 515 horsepower (384 kW). This high horsepower allows the bulldozer to handle dense material and push significant loads down inclines.
Operating Weight: Weighing in at around 55 tons, the D275 offers the stability and balance needed for hillside work, where it must maintain control over large loads of material on uneven terrain. The weight also helps it dig into tough material, ensuring that each push is effective.
Blade Capacity: The D275 has a semi-U blade with a capacity of up to 15 cubic meters, allowing it to move substantial amounts of material in each pass. This large blade capacity is essential for shaping the land efficiently, reducing the number of passes required.
The D275’s power and high blade capacity make it ideal for moving large amounts of earth in a single pass, which is essential for restoration work where time and efficiency are key.
Caterpillar D9R: A Workhorse in Land Restoration
Alongside the Komatsu, the Caterpillar D9R bulldozer plays a crucial role in the quarry restoration. Known for its durability and robust build, the D9R is a versatile machine that’s commonly used in tough environments, including mining and reclamation projects.
Engine Power: The D9R is powered by a Cat 3408C engine, delivering around 405 horsepower (302 kW). This engine power provides the torque needed to handle dense material and push heavy loads down steep grades.
Operating Weight: With an operating weight of approximately 48 tons, the D9R is slightly lighter than the D275 but still offers excellent stability and control. This weight allows it to maintain balance while pushing material down the hill, ensuring smooth and controlled movements.
Blade Capacity: The D9R features a straight blade with a capacity of around 13 cubic meters. This blade is well-suited for precision work, allowing the operator to spread and level material evenly across the restoration site.
The Caterpillar D9R’s efficient design and reliability make it a dependable partner in this restoration, complementing the Komatsu D275 by covering ground quickly and shaping the land effectively.
The Importance of Quarry Restoration
Restoring an old quarry is a complex process that benefits from both powerful equipment and experienced operators. The Komatsu D275 and Caterpillar D9R bulldozers work together to move massive amounts of material, reshaping the quarry walls and floor to create a more natural slope. This work not only improves the visual landscape but also prepares the land for potential future uses, whether it’s for agriculture, recreational areas, or simply integrating it back into nature.

So, from what we can see from these videos, the way this mine works: At ground level, the various excavators and trucks perform surface mining of the topmost layer of overburden. The trucks run a very short haul distance and dump their loads at the top of the next lower level of the mine, where one of the huge wheel excavators is cutting down another 50-foot (15 meter) bench. These bulldozers push the loads from the trucks down, so the big wheel excavator re-loads it into the conveyor system and clears it from the mine. Wow, that's a big operation, where all those excavators and trucks are basically doing bench prep for three or four of the big wheel excavators. Cool!
