I don't think someone can just 'get up and leave'- it's so much more complicated than that, being abused; verbally or physically can affect your mental state so much to a point where you feel trapped and completely hopeless. You can feel scared even if you do get help and get away from it (to be honest I don't think you can ever get away from it, it's always going to be somewhere deep in your mind, you have thoughts of 'what if they come back'/ or /this and this happens' on occasions when something triggers you) you're still going to think back to it and on a lot of occasions, people are scarred for LIFE and no amount of therapyor pills could COMPLETELY HEAL UP that scar- it could hide it/bury it somewhere but it's always going to be there. You need to find a way to COPE with it, not forget it-cause trying to forget is wasting your time, one day its gonna come back to you- weather its flashbacks or memories or whatever. You know what's happened and you need to think to yourself ,it's OVER , i'm safe and I'm STRONG, so STRONG- I can take my revenge by showing that I can be a better person and showing that I can lead my own life -Sometimes people do need help/support from others to get through this, don't block it out- LET people help you or TRY to SPEAK up about what you're really feeling.

Thank you. This helped me understand a little more because I am one of those girls growing up that always thinks, " what are they doing? The first time they hit me or show any signs of being rough I will be OUT of that relationship! Why don't other women leave?" And I still agree with that because I truly believe I have trained my heart to truly tell myself when it's healthy love or unhealthy love. But your post helped me understand a little more why women stay and I could never really get that. It's truly so sad :/

Sometimes talk show hosts have to cut people off because again it IS only a one hour show. So they want you to get everything and ever piece of information out of you in the little time you have. So Tyra has to do that unless she wants her to keep talking about the same subject for a long period of time.

I know how Dominique felt and I'm 19 like she was, she wanted someone to show her the things they love about her so she could accept herself more. I was looking for that too and I know I should learn to love myself without having to seek acceptance from a boy, but I was almost there when I met my boyfriend. He's giving me that extra little bit that I need. I want to show him the things I love about him too so if he says he doesn't like something about himself I tell him the reasons why he should, and why I like a certain aspect of him he doesn't like and he does the same to me. I almost dated a guy who I felt in my gut that I shouldn't trust, because I was sad and wanted someone to love me but I'm glad I rejected him in the end because I found out later that he was NOT a nice person. Instead of settling for an asshole I waited it out and a few months later fell in love with my current boyfriend who is super kind and nurturing and so healthy for me to be with. I hope that everyone who is in an abusive relationship who reads this gets away and gets help, I don't care if you are a girl or a guy no one has the right to hurt you physically or emotionally especially if you already had a bad self image and were vulnerable. You deserve someone who lifts you up and helps you learn to love your self!

I haven't seen those comments, and have yet to scroll back through the history of them. No one deserves to be abused, even if they don't do anything about it but getting revenge by chopping off his junk isn't justifiable no matter how much we may think he deserves it. A more logical thing to do would be to call the police and have him thrown in jail. The cops take DV situations seriously and will even lock him up even if she doesn't have any evidence against him in many cases.

As someone who grew up in a household like this I understand your point. It doesn't make sense to go back to something who beats and rapes you. But in my circumstance, my mum was not able to with three kids on a single income be independent and provide for them. So she went back to him three times, before finally leaving him. She is finally independent and strong.

It's hard for me to understand as well but then I realize that not everyone has the same experiences as me. Some women get so caught up in the relationship that they FORGET that they are worth more than the abuse. It is a complete mental trip. Like she said, the abuse happens so gradual and then suddenly it's full on you controlling your life. If you have ever dated a total jerk before you can understand a little what these women are going through.

Good God, these stories anger me. I had to see domestic abuse growing up. You guessed it, my dad was a p.o.s. that harassed (that's an understatement) my mom every day. The chaos, noise, and violence was disturbing. It was senseless, very toxic actually. This garbage should not be tolerated. Men that do that shit should honestly just be executed. You can't "reform" them. That's really an injustice to protect the abusers. It lets the rest of the potential abusers out there realize they can get away with it.

there was a well known case not so long ago, about a women who claimed domestic abuse, etc, got an intervention order, etc, because she was jelous of her ex after he left. she kept the kids, he left the state. a few years later, she starts stalking him, drives a few hundred miles to his ciry, and corners his car in an alleyway, and calls the police, as he's not allowed within 200miles of her, and he gets arrested and placed in prison. protect peoples lives? she just ruined his. forever.

Im coming out of a 2.5 year abusive relatiobship and I started crying hearing this girls story... I got to that point to, HIM OR ME... And I started shopping for handguns... Thats when I knew I HAD to report him. You become very instinctual in that setting and its very cave man like. I would HAVE KILLED him. I started dreaming about it after the last instance of him blacking my eye on new years eve.. Unless you have been there, you dont understand.

You have to investigate every claim that comes in. False or not. It's better to investigate and find that a claim is false, than not investigate and something happens. That's what we are taught in the human services field. Every claim must be taken seriously.
