You mean before it was commercialized, electrified, marketed, and people put on parodic personas, like here? Or just what you first heard when young? Nostalgia ain't what is used to be.

He wore those clothes because he was raised in geographically isolated Appalachia - poorest areas in the US. Shot not because he owed drug money or anything like that but just because someone found out that he kept most of his money in his house. There’s a big difference from the gangster rapper of today and Stringbean. He had a lot of talent and the ones today well uh…

Why somebody would murder him we might never know. Maybe they thought he was rich. Stringbean didn't care about being rich.

Stringbean was a distance cousin (2nd) to my Dad. They grew up together in the country in a little town in Jackson Co, Ky. Dad said they would go fishing every morning and come home around noon. In the afternoons they would gather with friends on the porch and play music until late at night. Stringbean got his first banjo by selling two of his Dads chickens and buying his banjo. His Dad played the banjo and taught him how to play his. He was a true musician!

my PawPaw worked the tobacco fields and was bunkmates with Stringbean down around McKee back, I suppose, in the late 1930s. Most of my family on both sides is from that area; Isaacs, Shepherd, Farmer, and Reece.

Jackson County KY is an interesting place. Drive just a bit off the interstate and you’ll almost go back in time - in a very good way. Some of the last true Appalachian accents are in Jackson County. Quite a few great musicians from there including Keith Whitley’s right hand man for many years, Randy Hayes, as well as Heath Van Winkle who for many years worked with bluegrass acts including Charlie Sizemore and Ronnie Reno.

I stumbled on this dude watching old Flatt and Scruggs Vids. I find the guy quite entertaining for what it is. I found out that he and his wife were found murdered by burglars back in 1973 that's terrible.

What's worse is that it was his own kin! Although convicted and sentenced they are already out of prison. They killed a national treasure and his wife. So sad.

I was a kid,but I remember it too. If you grew up on hee haw, then you'd know he and Grandpa Jones were best friends. Even bought land together. They would go fishing together. Grandpa Jones bought him a gun and ironically, that was the gun used to kill him. String bean didn't trust banks. He was always flashing money. And every one he knew kept telling him to put the money in the bank. The guys that killed him ransacked his house looking for the money. They didn't find it,but string bean and his wife returned home while they were there and he was murdered and his wife, Estelle was killed trying to escape. Next day.....it would be grandpa Jones who would find the dead bodies. He never ever got over it either. After it was all said and done, trial and all,men in prison...... String beans house was sold. During the winter,it was cold and the new occupants built a fire in the fireplace. Later, they would find thousands upon thousands of burned up,charred pieces of dollar bills................

A few months before I heard he died I was 16 and working in a fried chicken dinner. Our business owner asked us to stay open late cause he had invited the He Haw tour bus to a free dinner. All the Hee Haw musicians came lined up and we each a two piece chicken box with fries and roll. Us three employees got to shake each of there hands. They were all very nice and humble people. A few months later I read in the newspaper how String Bean and his wife had been murdered. I’ll never forget it.

As a young kid in the 60s and early 70s you would watch captain kangaroo Mr green jeans. Although kids back then were drawn to String-bean also. His songs/comedy the pants. Growing up watching Hee Haw with my family I always liked the scarecrow skit with Stringbean and letters from home skit String did. I remember when I was about 8 years old we were watching Hee Haw. I overheard my parents talking about String-bean and how they missed him on the show. I remember asking my mother where is String-bean. She informed me that String and his wife were murdered by some bad men.
