Hello guys! I made this video to help you make a decision on whether you should buy a two stroke or a four stroke. Keep in mind, your decision will be different depending on your size, riding style, and what type of riding you like to do (motocross, endurocross, woods riding etc.). It is all rider preference! I hope the information in this video is some what beneficial to all you guys out shopping for a new bike!

A few things I'd add: -4 Strokes are a lot harder to start when you stall them while riding. (A lot of people buy the "hot start" to help) -If you plan to cruise, a 2 stroke is not ideal. Staying at a constant rpm is not something it like to do, you are either decelerating or accelerating. There isn't really a middle option. -I recommend 4 strokes to beginners so they can get used to riding with the predictable response you talked about. I've had many friends flip my old kx85 because they hit the power band WOT and went over board. That's not going to happen on a 4 stroke. -You forgot to say with 2 strokes the piston fires every time it goes up! with the 4 stroke it's every other time. That's a big reason why you have more power in the 2 stroke. With a 4 stroke it's "1 stroke for power, 3 strokes to wear the engine out" XD That's about all I can think of at the moment

I agree. Buy one of each! If you can't afford both, get the cheaper one that is easier to maintain. That would be the 2 stroke :) Most guys won't have to worry about jetting after they get it dialed in once.

I would agree with the jetting to an extent. I have to adjust my idle air screw with the weather. When I lived in Colorado it wasn’t an issue. But now on the east coast it needs to be adjusted with the temperature and humidity.

One thing I think you should've mentioned is that when it comes to any slow and technical riding when there's not a lot of air moving through, the 4 strokes will start to overheat way quicker than any 2 stroke. Very well done video and very informative :).

+Jeremy Miguire (Raptor Killa) Yes for sure! My two stoke never overheats. The only time I've ever smelled coolant was when my rad hose was leaking when I was filming for Episode 3 of the web series hahaha. There are actually a ton of other things I would have liked to mention. It's tough to keep a video under 5 minutes! I also would have mentioned that the two strokes are much easier to start. Even with the electric start on both, the 2 strokes start up much better. There are so many things... I really appreciate the comment and you supporting my channel Jeremy :D.

I'd take 4 strokes for the trails cause of the low end power it really helps on the tough parts of the trails and when u need to go slow and easy and I'd take 2strokes for the track because they make a lot of power and just do really well on the track where u need speed and power right there but in the woods 2strokes do get a little harder to manage than 4strokes but personally I prefer 2 strokes but am still a big fan of 4strokes basicaly all bikes are great dont discriminate . 😂

another thing for anyone wondering about 2 stroke fuel mixing, its not as bad as it may sound, you just buy a quart or so for fairly cheap, and pour the right amount into a can and mix, you can easily find the right amount through a google search for the ratio, and theres plenty of online calculators

spot on Megan. 2 stroke, jd jet kit, buy a pipe a season, cheap to rebuild top end, tight technical ridding, lower center gravity, rotating mass . four stroke low end power = traction loss, spin tire , more wight on top of engine , expensive to rebuild. just depends on where you live and what type of ridding you do.

There is EFI for 2 strokes. Mostly snowmobiles use them. There are injectors spraying oil directly on the crankshaft and there is a fuel injector on the top of the crank case. If I recall correctly a few of the most popular 2 stroke bikes have EFI conversion kits for them too.

After riding two 2020 two strokes, i jumped on the 250sxf. i have to say that i completely fell in love with this bike. I didnt really feel the weight diference comparing to the 150sx but just loved how smooth and predictable the bike was. The low rpm power was something i never experienced. It felt great coming out of corners. I just loved it. Really looking on buying one. The 150sx was also very nice to ride and less expensive also.

I totally agree with everything mentioned in this video and very well done. I do think there are a few things worth mentioning though. A lot of the pros of a four stroke can be done to a two stroke with a few mods. You can tune the bike to a smoother powerband (although it will never be as smooth as a four stroke), 300 two strokes are known for their great low end torque in comparison to smaller two strokes, and a Lectron carburetor can nearly eliminate the need to rejet a carb. I completely agree with the weight comparison, my dad's 2012 WR450F is noticeably heavier than my 2005 300EXC both on the trail and even when picking it up onto the stand. Parts are also substantially cheaper for my two stroke than my dad's four stroke, and replacing them are much easier than my dad's bike. I also completely agree with the header pipe on a two stroke, much more susceptible to dents and being crushed (also not very cheap to replace $225 for mine). Well done video and you've earned a subscriber.

My second bike a 1974 Yamaha YZ-80-A was only 5.5 HP but I more than tripled that power with a GYT kit and a lot of port work ect.. needed Premium leaded gas availed back then,.. Then a '76 MX-C . Then I upgraded to a 1978-YZ100-E because I am short.. I liked the idea of 4 stroke dirt bikes however.. so I took a 1972 Honda SL 125 Motor had Powroll Bore and stroke it to 160 cc's hot reground cam ported two valve head.. and the 24 mm Mikuni off from my second GYT kit Yamaha GT-80 I almost bought a new CCM 500 Motocross bike in 1983 for $2,300.. at that time they were still using a motor based off from the BSA Goldstar B-50 engine.. I still have a 1983 Honda XR-350 4 stroke and a 1998 YZ-400-F

I apologize for the negative feedback! But I've seen the how the industry and the sport of MX is declining because people think four strokes are so great. For example, dad and son want to race MX. Son wants a 4 stroke like the pros! (because they think four strokes are faster, not know that CC for CC two strokes produce MORE power AND torque than four strokes) Dad buys a 250f... 250f shortly after blows up because that is what they do (I've seen it a million times)... Bike goes up for sale... worthless.. Because its too expensive to fix and requires more mechanical ability, and tools. But if say they had bought a 125 or 250 2t instead, they can easily and cheaply afford to rebuild the bike themselves in their garage. Motocross was hugely booming in the 90's. Since the millennium the industry has been in a decline. Which you can partially blame on the economy but I've been in it from the start and I can tell you the four stroke fad has HURT local tracks and riders. Big time. Theres so many misconceptions about the two strokes still circulating today (even though more people are becoming wise to it, and buying two strokes instead) that are influencing people to buy four strokes, which in turn is just filling the pockets of rich CEO's in charge of Honda, Kawi, Suzuki, Yamaha, because four stroke dirtbikes not only cost more, but they cost much much more to fix. In conclusion, four strokes are for people who can AFFORD them. I want to see MX come back to what it used to be!

For some reason KZbin doesn't show the full comment. It ends with ... in the middle of your sentence. But here is the thing....I switched to a two stroke for these reasons you just described. I had a 250f and it was expensive to maintain and more complex to work on. I like my two stroke a lot. I still really enjoyed my four stroke though and I miss it sometimes. Some people really prefer the way a four stroke rides. To each their own right. I fully agree with you about the fact that they have been trying to weed out the two strokes in moto/supercross because they make more money off them, period. But that's not what I was trying to get across in the vid. Just giving my input on the ups and downs of both bikes. Feel free to give negative feedback. It's all good.
@ktpwe
@ktpwe 6 жыл бұрын
I would also like to add a non mentioned pro of a 2 stroke: 2 stroke engines are less likely to stall when the engine is under load (i.e. when the rear wheel is blocked ... like in a swamp, sand and etc), because they have 2 times shorter interval between explosions/ignitions. So basically 1 cylinder 2 stroke would be equivalent to a 2 cylinder 4 stroke, but with less rotating mass, because you do not need wider crankshaft, bigger block and extra parts to accommodate 2nd cylinder (one example of such attempt was the infamous Aprillia RXV450/550...). Talking about another con of a 2 stroke that was not mentioned in the video is engine efficiency (of converting fuel into mechanical work). I.e. 4 strokes have something up to 30% engine efficiency, while 2 strokes (especially the carburated ones [yes it is currently 2017 and we already have TPI 2 strokes :D and 2 stroke fuel injection from way back in 200x in snowmobiles]) are get only half of that 15-17%, which translates in worse mileage and the need to carry bigger fuel tank (if you are into long rides) or shorter rides (between fill tank fill ups that is).

Its so simple 2 strokes are faster because the engine dont have to wait for valves to open and close. therefore lower RPM, 2 strokes on other hand no valves. no cam shaft. none of that heavy bullshit, there you go now you got a good weight reduction. and when your engine doesnt need to wait for valves = higher RPM. higher RPM = more torque... more torque = more HP, more HP = More speed, and the faster it gets up to that speed.

I agree with everything but 2 things having a more planted bike is better to rutts, mud and loose terrain. Its not a con. And i would say 4 stroke for the forest and 2 stroke for the track. 4 stroke has power all around and is predictable in the forest u r not going that fast for the most part, power band would not be used enough. 2 stroke is faster in the top end for the most part and lighter so that would be great at the track easier to flick around and get more air and the track is where u really need to go fast. Great vid tho!!

Ok say it takes 1 minute to put some oil in fuel on a four stroke if your racing you have change your oil every couple of races that could take up to 30 mins plus if inexperienced change oil filter and if you don't you have a chance on blowing up your motor after that your looking at 3000 to just get it fixed where on a 2 stroke you put some oil in your fuel and if you happen to blow a motor $300 and it's fixed so you can buy a money waster and slower bike or a faster and cheaper to run bike your choice personally I ride a cr125 and a kx250 2strorke

Trent T Okay, so this is a basic comparison video made for the inexperienced looking into purchasing a motorcycle. There are obviously pros and cons to both and what some people think are cons, could be pros to others. Basically what I was trying to let these people know is that a two stroke requires and extra step when fuelling. It's just something I thought I should mention to anyone that is new to the sport. Not necessarily a major con, just figured it was more of a con than an pro. I had to mention it somehow. Every once in a while it can be a pain in the butt, maybe you're out of mixing oil and it's a Sunday and the shops are all closed, it's happened to me many of times. People are so quick to pick the video apart when all I was doing is trying to get some basic information to new riders haha.
@trentt3620
@trentt3620 7 жыл бұрын
So your saying there is not a shop open on Sunday that sell oil that is the biggest load of shit I have ever heard I will tell ya now it's better changing oil after every 3 rides and wasting more time fixing your bike than actually riding it and then if you don't change oil you have more of a chance of blowing a motor than you have to fix it and that takes a lot of time meanwhile all your friends are riding because they where smart and brought a 2 stroke where you don't have to change oil after every 3 rides u don't have the risk of spending 3 k on your bike you don't have to waste time working on it as much I am sure that a person that wants to get in to riding dosent want do maintenance on there bikes a lot plus if they blow a 2 stroke up it is going to be quicker to get running again and cheaper so like I said time waster and money waster or a bike that's faster cheaper less maintenance it's a pretty obvious choice

Trent T Hahaha you are right out to lunch. It's amazing how close minded people can be. I can see now that you've got barely enough brain power to keep your heart beating. If you had an attention span at all and watched the entire video, you'd have seen that a spoke about he maintenance costs of the 2 stroke vs the 4 stroke as well. Yes, I am well aware that the 4 strokes are expensive to maintain in comparison. I've owned more than one of each and have experienced it for myself. This doesn't mean that whoever buys a 4 stroke isn't smart. Believe it or not, some people can actually afford to ride one and enjoy them more. Pretty cool eh? Haha man, this is why I don't respond to comments on this video very often. People with very little brain power lose their minds over the tiny things rather than seeing the big picture. I was MENTIONING to people who are NEW to riding that 2 strokes require mixed fuel. It's no big deal. In no way, shape, or form does it say in this video that mixing fuel costs more than maintaining a 4 stroke machine. Nor does it imply that a 2 stroke isn't worth buying for this reason. It's just a little bit of information for newbies. Calm down, take a pill, and go watch something else if my stuff is so offensive to you haha.
@trentt3620

Now your just being a fucking smart ass I might have not read correctly but u said mixing gas is more expensive than changing oil because that incorrect changing oil is time wasting and is going to cost more i don't know what country you live in but j know where I am I can go down to any fuel station and they have a pump for 2 stroke fuel so that way your not going to mix fuel and you will just have to do what every four stroke rider has to do yes I know four stroke can be fun to ride if you say live on A farm and have land to muck around on in the mud but there still boring there always the same and reason why I put some of the Points in my comment so if someone that is looking to get in to the sport he knows more detail about prices and maintenance because you briefly said it in your video you just say there more expensive when you say new rider arent going to know if you Mean buy $100 dollars or a couple of thousand dollars

I had a scooter 4 stroke, it wasn't really that well going from 0 to whatever, it was hardly acceleration, but it had lots of speed after that. Now I have a tomos 15 2 stroke, it starts much easier then my 4 stroke, you don't have to worry mixing too much oil in your tank because the oil is just to keep the piston sliding and from overheating. But dont over do it now you could slow down your piston from all the oil. My 2 stroke bike has like 8.000 rpms, and until 4.000 rpms it doesn't get that much acceleration, but after the 4k you really gotta hold tight for a second. The bike is air cooled, there for I don't worry that much about heat because it has to hold a lot of heat until it melts or dies. My experience: My 4 stroke scooter was fun, it turned on harder than my 2 stroke and had a lot of problems if I don't drive it for a year while my 2 stroke starts at any time. Funny to me is that my 4 stroke consumed more fuel then my 2 stroke. My 4 stroke scooter was struggling at accelerating from 0 to 20 but got easily after that to 70 km/h while my 2 stroke accelerated from 0 easily but got all his power only above 4k rpms. I drove my scooter 70 km/h from 80 km/h and my 2 stroke tomos 15 100 km/h from 120 km/h. It was automatic against manual transmission, because I like action and wilderness I am for 2 stroke 4 life.

I like everything she said but she was wrong on one thing. KTM makes a fuel injected 2 stroke with an electric start, she says there was no fuel injected 2 strokes. I've been riding for years and I've had both, I currently own a 2022 KX450 and I love that bike! I also enjoyed my YZ250 and my KX250 2 stroke biked. They are lighter they sound amazing and you can't beat the smell of the 2 stroke exhaust. 2 strokes are way easier to maintain and fix when broken but the 4 strokes have instant power in any gear. With a 2 stroke you have to down shift a lot and raise the RPM's to get power but as long as you're riding and having fun that's all that matters.

Actually not all 2 strokes require you to mix the oil and gas. The new Beta 2 strokes have a fuel tank and an oil tank much like bikes did way back in the early days of offroad riding and competition. There also has been talk about FI 2 strokes but I haven't checked into it for a few mths. I liked your basic review on this topic and agree with most of what you said. The biggest problem that I've seen with riders is that they don't have any clue on how to basic maintenance or how to set up their machine to get the best out of it. I think everyone should learn how to do basic maintenance and set up before buying a bike. It will never happen but it would be nice oh and btw I have had fun riding 4strokes but I'm a diehard 2 stroke rider from my childhood!! BRAAAAAAP

Nicely produced! A mic would have done wonders, but still okey. Most of my veteran enduro riding buddies are running 4-strokes and seem happy with them. Agree with most of what you say Megs. But the XC-W two stroke KTMs are very smooth. JD Jetting kit, green powervalve spring and the bike is as docile and smooth as you want. They can be made aggressive and snappy. That is part of the appeal of the two strokes, they can easily be made what you want them to be. With a four stroke it's a bit more difficult

My first big bike was a 97 cr125 and I didnt know much about bikes at the time and when the top end went I got rid of it because I wasnt knowledgeable enough to rebuild. I had it for a lil over a year though and honestly did love the bike. Then after that I picked up my 04 Crf250 and it is a blast!! I like it and all but riding my buddys 2015 yz250f with the fuel injection i feel im missing out on some more and smoother power wich has made me not dislike the bike but think about other options. Then this past weekend I went to my other buddys 4th of july party and he has trails in his woods behind his house. Couldnt get my bike there so he lended me one of his many bikes. I picked out the 99 yz250 wich ive ever ridden a 250 2 stroke before n I'm glad I asked to ride it because I forgot how much fun the 2 strokes were, and on top of that it felt more torqy than my bike with I loved even though Im not a HUGE fan of the instant hit of power when the power band comes in I got used to it and started to ri like it was my own bike. So now I'm looking for another 2 stroke so I'll have both!

4-Stroke. 2-Strokes have more power to boot; they should all throughtout the RPM range. The reason for this is that in 2 rpms it completes what a 4stroke does in 4rpms. It's consistency...Like a pulses of power...the 2stroke has them more often. The kicker is that your 2stroke has oil in the gas and gas in the oil - It's an inefficiency. The guy what built'm figured it'd be a smart compromise as metal was so difficult to work with, back in those days, that he was willing to sacrifice fuel efficiency to, theoretically, cut in half the amount of wear on the rings and cylinder. The issue is that he actually increased the amount of wear...but he had come so far, might as well see if anyone will buy it. and they did. and it's still around. If you've got a 2stroke, just remember to flip it a couple times before you get into the top end.

I transitioned from 1 yr of riding my awesome 500 exc (with aftermarket muffler for brutal power). I was riding a technical single track and I feel I need a lighter bike to get better in trials techniques. I tried a 350 exc and it was lazy for me:(. Anyway hope I dont regret... Anyway, good video...I would also add one of the 2 stroke benefits is that sound doesnt travel as far as the 4 stroke (due to higher frequency)

I don't know why people think mixing gas is such a negative. Mixing gas has become super easy with companies like Amsoil. They sell a case of 8 ounce bottles for $60. Mix one bottle with 2 gallons of gas and you have your 32:1 ratio. There are charts on the internet to help you figure any other ratio that you need if you want something other than 32:1. Is it more difficult than just pouring in gasoline into a four stroke, yes, but it is not as difficult as people make it out to be.

If you are tired of jets on your 2 stroke get a lectron or an apt smart carb. Once dialed in its like fuel injection on the 4 stroke. I got the lectron and I will not go back to standard carbs. And if you think mixing gas is too much work or an inconvenience then you probably don't need a bike
