Here's a quick one for trail riders, if your going to spend over 50% of your time running top end 5th gear tapped run 450 4 stroke. More than 50% of the time if your riding windy hilly terrain run 300 2 strokes. If you're like me and do 50/50 of the two. Buy both and plan your rides according to the bike you choose for the day. No such thing as too many bikes, their not like women and don't get mad when you ride 2 different ones.

@Ben T. 2 strokes are more fun but 4 strokes are more practical. 2 strokes have a really weird power band that makes it super hard to actually use the power from the bike. 4 strokes have a very even power band that steadily clubs with rpm. If you plan on just riding casually 2 strokes are a great choice but with any competitive racing you would want to go with a 4 stroke since it's usually not the bikes limits on a track. It's the rider/track that set limits,and using something that you can control a lot better is obviously more beneficial for lap times and consistent riding

I'm an "old guy," and when i did mx and half mile (occasional trials), the only 4 strokes were in the open class in half mile. when i hear the term "two stroke" i would swear that i smell Blendzall in the air... lol. That said, i too have owned both, and both have their places... this was the finest explanation of the differences that i have ever seen... you rock! I hope that you will do more of such well detailed teachings in the future... suspension, tires, rake/trail, and the one i think most needed is MX bike vs Enduro (including street legal and not) - so many people that will *never* race buy mx bikes to do off-road... this is frequently not the best choice, since mx bikes are so finely honed to a specific purpose... (ok, off my soapbox) PLEASE keep up the good work... that was truly EXCELLENT!!

power valves and adjustable ignition map switches can be tuned on modern 2 strokes, they can be tuned to act almost like a 4 stroke with a very linear power band, and they can be tuned to hit their peak output so fast it will rip the bars from your hand, it used to be hit or miss if you bought the wrong bike before variable power valves, some were literally death traps especially for inexperienced riders that isn't the cases anymore and hasn't been for a long while

I appreciate how much you stress the fact that neither is better than the other or worse than the other. There’s too many dumbasses online nowadays being all like: “two stroke riders suck.” It’s just that annoying mindset society has nowadays that one thing is completely better than the other rather than just looking at what each category does good and bad. Everything has a downside and everything has a benefit, nothing is objectively better than the other

You ABSOLUTELY nailed it! My WR250R is nearly impossible to ride through boulders/reef/rock nasty slow stuff. But it wheelies and just slams corners hard and just feels comfy. It’s also a dual sport so obviously it does well on the street. The YZ250 2 stroke is unstoppable through nasty rocky reef and mud and stuff. Just lugs around. And it absolutely rips through sand and feels like I’m not even revving it enough. Pipe is cold after a few minutes. It’s just an awesome bike. I tried a friends 450 through some rocky reef sections and I stalled and dropped it more than I’d like to admit. But in sand and straightaways, it’s downright scary. So like you said, 2 stroke for some more technical low speed riding. 4 stroke when you wanna go maybe more high speed with stability. My 4 stroke is a blast on single track. I can chill in 2nd or 3rd and just sit or stand and go slow or fast. The 2 stroke, I have to stand and it kinda just wants to go fast to get the suspension working I guess.

@sandmanbub 4 жыл бұрын
@@lucananni8807 4 strokes are being pushed in racing for several reasons. EPA regulations and the companies focusing on selling the 4 strokes are 2 of the biggest reasons. Many places restrict 2 strokes and the AMA has been harsh on 2 stroke's in competition. The motorcycle industry has, for decades, been relying on automobile manufactures spending millions on research and development. They only do this for 4 stroke engines and the motorcycle industry has benefited greatly by not having to pay the price. The motorcycle industry does not want to spend research and development money on 2 strokes which they believe are being legislated out. This is why the factory rides are 4 stroke. Old people?
