Long thought to be the stuff of science fiction, Israel recently announced that they're working on the world's first energy based weapon’s system. Capable of shooting down missiles from 7km's away and running at a cost of just $3.50 per interception, it is considered to be the future of air defense, and might change the face of war forever.

as far as i can tell the main improvement in the laser system is that they found a way to make it work in less than ideal conditions by making it more powerfull, at least thats what i read in any case at 3.5 a shot , its going to make their enemies missile less cost effective ...

Of course you say "Israel has been subject to aggression off [Arab countries" but conveniently ignore all Israel's aggression... Which BTW for the past 30 years has been the one doing all the invasions and terroristic strikes on foreign soil against civilians... Ur clearly biased. Would be nice if u AT LEAST TRIED/PRETENDED to give an un-biased accounting... Let me guess, it's PROVOCATIVE/AGGRESSIVE for Iran to build nukes for self defense, but it's just A OK and DEFENSIVE when Israel does it ... And holds it's neighbors hostage with said capability...

Even if this laser cost $1000 a shot, the ROI would still be insane. Almost dollar-dollar cost vs the incoming rockets. $3.50 is just astounding.
@rainmannoodles
@rainmannoodles 2 жыл бұрын
$3.50 is almost certainly an underestimate (probably based purely on energy consumption). But there’s no doubt that the real number is still many, MANY times lower than the Iron Dome’s cost.
@tobyk.4911
@tobyk.4911 2 жыл бұрын
obviously that doesn't account for the initial costs for obtaining the system ... it's basically "After they have invested hundreds of millions, maybe even some billions, of $ in research and development, and also in building a few working units, ... after deployment, the additional costs for each individual "shot" are just 3.50 for electricity, instead of a 100k$ missile." But of course, especially for Israel which can expect to be targeted by thousands of missiles - per week- in any future war, it makes a lot of sense to have a system which (even with huge one-time costs for development and deployment) is very economic in the long run / for very high numbers of shots. And which can defend against a higher number of almost simultaneously attacking hostile missiles/rockets.

Hello, great video! I just want to say one thing I am an Israeli and I served In the army and one of my best friends served in the brigade that worked with the Iron Dome.. so I can say with confidence that the irone Dome interception rate is higher then 90 it's closer to 100.. One of the main reasons why it's around 90% is because when the army sees that the rocket is going to fall in an open area where there is not much of a chance of people being there the army sends less rockets to intercept or it doesn't send any rockets at all.. so if you count the number of rockets sent to Israel from Gaza and the number that actually managed to hit something it looks like it's 90% but most of the time it's on purpose because as you said the Iron Dome is very expensive... But when the army really wants to intercept a rocket it's almost a guarantee hit.. alot closer to 100% than 90 % it's more like 98%

The most amazing part of this is, ironically, not the laser itself--it's the tracking and aiming system that lets the laser target an incoming threat and kill it. The US has had high powered lasers for decades, but one of the main reasons why this sort of system hasn't been developed here is because we haven't been able to work out the critical error of getting the laser to reliably connect with the target. Of course, the scary thing about this is that a functional version of this system is only half a step away from a system that can be loaded onto a plane/large drone and synced with a facial recognition database to fly over an area, identify specific targets, and take them out with pinpoint precision. There is no need for an operator to identify the target on the video, as the computer could do it automatically and make the decision to fire within milliseconds of making the match and double checking. Seriously, welcome to sci-fi.

This really isn't the case, like 100% wrong. A drone with a $50 camera can do facial recognition when its video stream is headed to a $150 billion supercomputer. However, I'd have to start wearing my foil hat if a drone smaller than a 747 can shoot anything with a continuous 150kw laser. It's a tiny (2000x?) bit more charge than a couple of 18650s or a USB powerbank can provide, and that's assuming the 150kw is input power. The next time you see a drone the size of a bus, wear your sunglasses, it might have a laser.

Besides the cost benefits, what is even better is that it can target and destroy a missile and possible move on to the next target, while traditional missile defences trade 1 missile for another and the maximum amount of anti missile/rocket capabilities are limited by how much ammo they can carry, so they can be overwhelmed by more incoming missiles and be destroyed. Imagine if this technology gets more advanced and they can target and destroy missiles much faster than 5 seconds and at a larger range, that would be almost flawless protection.

It's worth emphasizing that UAVs are a major use case of the system. Iron Dome can shoot down UAVs in theory, but the real-life success rate is around 0%, as it's really not built for that purpose. Right now Israel uses missiles shot from other UAVs for this purpose, but short UAV flights into its territory have been known to land safely. Iron Beam is not just excellent at destroying UAVs, it is also less affected by the weather: most UAVs that infiltrate Israel are for surveillance, which requires good weather, where the Iron Beam works best.

You’re right, but the point was that it’s much cheaper for the attacker to keep sending hundreds of missiles even with a small chance of a hit, compared to the defender’s cost of taking them down. So a war of attrition plays largely in favor of the attacker, not to mention the constant fear of a missile getting through.

Will be interesting to see how the laws of armed conflict change when lasers are used in an anti-personnel capacity. I’ve had discussions with JAGs; a common opinion is lasers would be prohibited for use against personnel because the lasers could be considered a “terror weapon”. Silent, invisible, and inflicting wounds unlike anything else (severed limbs, blood exploding due to superheating to flash point, blinding…).

@@montithered4741 lawyers, of course. Lasers can be visible too... There is also inherent risk in firing a laser, it is as a device also dangerous to own troops and operators. The same argument can be made for artillery shells. They are supersonic, and those who get hit never hear them coming- the whistling thing is made up by movies, though I think it is a thing in slower mortar rounds. Arguing which weapon is more humane when all of them are made to maim and kill is a cynical thing making sense to few people. There are plenty of vets/survivors who can attest to bullets being more cruel than they'd need to be. Get hit in the jaw and you will be fed through a tube for the miserable rest of your life. I'd say it's still too early to evaluate the practicability of Laser Weapons. While it has been shown that the technology works under testing conditions there is very little information about its durability under combat conditions and possible counter measures or mitigation strategies that potential targets could employ. One has to remember that 16´´ cannons also work perfectly well as a weapons system, yet all navies all over the world have phased out all large caliber gun systems. Not because they don't work but because missiles are simply seen as more efficient. It remains to be seen how valuable Lasers will be to Militarys in the future and whether they can surpass existing weaponry in any role.

Yeah, within the atmosphere, lasers are only ever going to be point defense weapons, which is what Iron Beam is. Also, for large weapons, "armoring" i.e. coating them with some sort of protective layer, will require much longer exposure times for the laser to destroy them, perhaps rendering the laser useless. Then they've spend a lot of time on making it perform netter and have more capabilities with the reduced systems... 2. Are you sure about this estimate? I heard 50-100K$ last. 3. I mention this whenever folks get all excited about laser weapons and people are like... nu uh... you dum... laser powerful! But if you take any of these laser systems apart the beams are all controlled by a series of mirrors. It doesn't even have to be reflective, it can be ablative and just create enough smoke to choke out the laser. Or a combination of mirrored surface over an ablative under coat. These things don't have a long time they can effectively stay on target because of power considerations as well as atmospheric dispersion of the beam over distance. I'm waiting for them to actually shoot down even just a fully white target. The latest one I watched was a mostly white target that had oddly painted black struts for some reason which of course were the point of failure in the test. A can of reflective spray paint would likely be a pretty effective counter to the time and energy constrains of current weapons.
