I reckon they don't have nukes there. If it's to keep all the bigwigs safe, adding a few silos or even storing them seems like a poor idea. Nukes add danger just by being there if something goes wrong, and if enemies think they were active silos they'd target it even harder than before... Plus the added staff to manage the nukes and the space to store them seems counter productive, especially nowadays.

I worked there as an outside contractor once. It's not that the whole thing's a big secret, the trouble is finding someone to ask who actually has the answers. I had to get clearances to go there, but the only restrictions we really had were: 1. Don't go exploring, 2. Don't take pictures, and 3. If you see anybody you recognize, keep it to yourself. Obviously we didn't get a tour or anything, but our escort shared all kinds of fun facts about the place. We definitely weren't "need to know" people, and if the logistics and such were really that confidential they wouldn't have given us the trivia session. Still pretty neat though, and WAY bigger than you think it is. Those tunnels are massive.

As a Naval Officer back in the early 90's, I was a Systems Engineer for the National Military Command System and spent a lot at time at Site R. Back then, it was the primary alternate site for the National Military Command Center and the various Service Command Centers to relocate should the Pentagon become unusable. At that time, it was primarily a back-up site that had a skeleton crew keeping the systems operable should the need arise with recurring drills where staff would practice relocation from the Pentagon to ensure a seamless a transition as possible. It is a small town underneath about 1000 ft of solid granite with very thick blast doors because of it's cold war origins. As we are now 30 years later, I would guess the continuity of operations mission is still primary with probably other missions that have been added and evolved since 9/11. We didn't have any alcohol on site back then.

I participated in military exercises inside Raven Rock Mountain in the late 1970's. I was the project officer for automating the Marine Corps officer assignment system and as part of that mission I also was tasked to developing a system to reconstitute the Marine Corps officer corps after a nuclear strike against the US. That was a challenge as it was before cell phones, the internet, or any other useful technologies we routinely use today. It was a complex system that relied heavily on telegrams, the postal services, landline telephone services, etc. which were not likely fully operational after a nuclear strike. We did conduct several actual and simulated recall tests using the system and it was deemed to be partially successful in recalling reserve, retired, and former Marine officers to designated assembly areas to be reassigned or reconstitute operational forces. I was both an interesting task and an interesting place to work.

Because it was constructed during the Truman Administration, the locals in the town of Waynesboro used to call it "Harry's Hole." Site R is the worst kept secret in Pennsylvania and a lot of people have heard of it. About 20 years ago, WGAL TV 8 in Lancaster was announcing winter closings and delays due to a snowstorm. There are tunnels that run miles off into nearby towns, hidden in the forests, and they are also watched by cameras and daily patrols to be sure the cameras are seeing what's actually there.

Me and Friend stumbled onto this place once when on a hobby train run up to Blue Ridge Summit, Pa. in mountains. Very ominous and strange. All the gates were open, but warning dings everywhere. We stopped by a house located outside the complex and spoke to a guy mowing his lawn. He told us if we hit within 29 feet if the fence armed marines would show up Out of nowhere 😱
@codym3483 жыл бұрын
The gates at the public road typically stay open. If you went through them you'd come to the guard post and be turned around. This is what's shown in the still at 5:30. The yellow paint on the road is where there are steel barricades a few feet thick. And it'd be the Capitol Police coming to visit if you got too curious about the fence, the marines don't hang out there.

The Washington Post seems to like blowing open US government secrets. There was a time i think in the 80s where they published stolen material from an FBI office that _really_ made the FBI look like a sneaky bunch of A-holes. There's a few tiers of state secrets that I think do need to be leaked from time to time. Any government holding too much power makes me nervous.

So I'm merrily driving down a little country road in the mountains, when suddenly I start seeing razor wire in the woods beside me. Turns out it's this place, and the road I was on went by the entrance gate, while the job itself was on the south slope of this mountain.

Please look into Mt Weather. I number of years ago I attended a one week long, FEMA earthquake disaster response exercise there. There was the above ground FEMA facilities, dorms, cafeteria, bar, etc. and on the other side of the mountain, a very secure underground area that we were not allowed to even get close to, it was very heavily guarded. The site was not known to the public until a TWA 727 crashed into the side of the mountain on Dec 1st, 1974. The news crews responding to the crash accidentally discovered this fenced-in secure facility. At the time we were there the (Vice?) President's helicopter landed there every day, sat on the ground for a few minutes and then flew off again. We were told that this was so if the Vice-President actually needed to be moved there because of an national emergency, the helicopter arriving would not cause any undue alarm, since it happened every day.

May I bring to your attention two things: Operation High Point & Operation Low Point Brad Meltzer's latest book uses a lot of information about these two operations in order to create a fact-based background/setting for his book. But the interesting and salient part is that the government set up a dozen (or more?) mega-warehouses (apparently 5× the size of a CostCo location!), each one being a huge store-house for pretty much anything that might be needed in case of TEOTWAWKI. Medical supplies, long-term food storage, basic industrial supplies, maybe even weapons & ammunition ... just about everything! But these aren't military bunkers/store-houses, but rather are intended as 'deep back-up' for the civilian/commercial sectors, again, in case of TEOTWAWKI. Brad is very open about what he found out, and even his visits/tours. Perhaps a collaboration with him would be a good idea, as he apparently already has contacts inside the system! I'm sure I'm not the only one who'd love to see whatever you could put together about these places! *Go For It!*

They’ve said it’s decommissioned, but it housed VP Cheney for a bit (after 9/11) as he went from facility to facility. I’ve been there. It can house ~1000 people; massive bomb blast doors, many levels, sleeping areas, medical bay, entertainment rooms, comm’s /TOC hub, store rooms with all kinds of supplies , et al. Technically this is for the Lower house of Congress (maybe some Senate) to ride out during times in crisis (may they never come).

Many years ago I was on a motorcycle ride on top at High Rock. There was another winding road that went further up the hill and we rode up and at the top there where camo dudes that came out with M16 guns and turned us around. They were guarding a radio tower on top I believe this was part of Raven Rock communication towers
@Redneck_Ed6 ай бұрын
Those towers are sitting on top of Quirauk Mountain in Maryland which I believe is called Site C which is directly above the old Fort Ritchie. Confusing because to get there, you drive up Rt 491 which is called Raven Rock Road. Site R though is a different location about 5 miles NE in PA, but it also has radio towers on top of it. You get to Site R via Route 16 or Harbaugh Valley Road. It would make a lot more sense if the Raven Rock Mountain Complex were directly accessed via Raven Rock Road, but the two are separated by about 5 miles.

Raven Rock was for the government to function out of in a largely military/defense capacity, thus why it's called the underground pentagon. Mt Weather was built for support agencies and communications. The highest officials would more likely end up at Raven Rock, where it would be easier to continue doing whatever it is that they do.

I worked at Site R for a year and a half. Amazing facility to visit but a not-so-fun place to work. Especially the day that one of the generators exploded. It shot fire hundreds of feet into the air and caused enough of a disturbance to register as a small local quake. The local populace already hates Site R because of its secrecy, and they “knew” some kind of secret explosives has gone off. They didn’t believe the generator story, but if you ever see one of the generators, you would understand. They are four stories high. And I was stuck with the unfortunate task once of having to re-badge everyone with access to the facility. That meant most of the people who work at the Pentagon. All the people with any authority anyway. Plus the military personnel who worked there. It’s a huge facility. I don’t miss working there, but it was a unique experience.

@@stargazer7644 You must not be familiar with how big generators can get. If you need a lot of power, like this place must, it takes a big engine to spin the alternator to make the power.
