MegaRAID came from LSI (formerly AMI) who has made the RAID controllers for IBM pretty much forever. The tools aren't specific to IBM/Lenovo. Old IBM servers is generally a good source of cheap LSI RAID controllers, though.

Jup, LSI got bought by Avago, and later, Avago got bought by Broadcom.... The latest MegaRAID Storage Manager (MSM) can be downloaded via the Broadcom website, as well as the IBM/Lenovo websites. You can download the latest firmwares there as well. Should you not have an IBM/Lenovo rebranded (OEM-ed) LSI controller, you can check at Broadcom.

You should buy a capture card. That way when you are recording your servers/computers screens, you don't have to configure OBS or another screen capture software to get good quality recordings of a screen. Ooh, also cool outro screen! Good work!

MegaRAID is the old LSI range, not IBM/Lenovo. IBM/Lenovo, along with Dell and Intel and other companies just rebrand the LSI controllers, or build their cards/boards around the LSI RAID chips. MegaRAID Software Manager was originally made by LSI, taken over by avago, then Broadcom. Additionally that is not how you clear a drive. You should be scanning for configurations when you want to import an array. If its just a single disk you want to clean, then just right click on the disk and clean it. You should really only be scanning for foreign configs when youre moving an array to a new card, or you've had some sort of raid failure like a hotspare being marked incorrectly and need to clear and re-import the config. Also just because it says Unconfigured (Good) doesnt mean it doesn't have sector errors. Because it hasn't been attached to this controller before, it will show Good because you removed the configuration and it hasn't failed as far as the card can detect. You should be probing the SMART data, or direct attaching it and using a tool like HD Sentinel to scan the drive.

What about SMART data from the disk? I have an LSI card with megaraid in a server with ESXi at work and passed the controller to a machine on it to be able to manage disks with the program. I don't remember if SMART data are readable in any way, but some error on relocated sectors count could lead to a bad drive working even if it could appear good. Will check on Monday if any data is available. Cheers!
@StefanoBettega6 жыл бұрын
Well, just checked today at work on my ESXi Avago controller, but as far as I can see, no SMART data seems to be available in the application. Maybe the on-controller BIOS has more options... BTW in the application you can roughly configure an email advertising when something is going weird...

if get predictive error message on ibm 3650 m4 Server then is it required to replace hdd. incase if needed then how to replace HDD
@MyPlayHouse4 жыл бұрын
In a production environment, I would order a replacement (can be used) and replace it when it comes. If you are playing server at home,, I would check my backup,, and start looking for a replacement,, at the right prices.

Some RAID controllers don't actually expose the underlying drive's SMART data. You can get to it when using HP SmartArray controllers using HP tools, but IIRC Lsi/Avago controllers don't expose the raw SMART data.

Why would you use RAID manager software to check on the status of a drive, instead of proper disk checking tools?
@MyPlayHouse6 жыл бұрын
Hi Twisted Metal The MEGARAID software do not do much more than read the data from the raid controller and present them to me.. the raid controller will all by it self keep an eye on all the drives, but megaraid it just a way to see it inside windows. Thank you for watching! :-)
@thefreddit6 жыл бұрын
Hardware RAID controllers in between the OS and the physical drives = no direct access to drives or SMART. You can only access what SMART data is exposed by the RAID controller, which thus requires the controller manufacturer's tools.
