As a norwegian, I can confirm we have a complete lack of seeing warning signs in the mountains. We even made a movie called "Bølgen" (or "The Wave" in english) in 2014 where all scientists in the movie, except for the protagonist, just kinda brush off the warning signs.

I have watched that movie and the sequel about an earthquake, and I remember an scene where the main character, who predicted the future in the first movie, tells his gaughter to no go to a building because there is going to be a masive earthquake. When he is gone, she goes to the top of the building for no reason and then, surprise, a massive earthquake happens, and the girls whatches how the entire city is being destroyed and a giant wave of dirt is moving toward her (the movie isn't very scientifically realistic), and she doesn't even move until his dad comes to her running. Literally, she had the survival instinct off.

Mega Tsunamis get even scarier when you start to look further back in history. Space debris, probably a comet, hit the Indian Ocean at one point and made an absolutely terrifying one. The surrounding continents still bare the scars of that wave miles inland.

Not Canadian, but spent a decent amount of time working cruises there and am unsurprised at the article's concern for the salmon. They're a huge local economic and cultural spotlight, and it was always a big deal to go see them crowd the rivers during the spawning window. Though could certainly seem a bit tangental when you're suddenly reminded that Mother Nature could squish you under her watery shoe at any moment 😅

Megatsunamis aren’t directly died to their mode of occurrence, it really is a size thing. The reasons they occur in fjords so much is because they are extremely thin and deep, so a lot of water is displaced from the incoming rock. That doesn’t mean an underground volcano, tectonic shift, or landslide can’t produce a mega tsunami. Those events typically produce much more energy than rockfall mega tsunamis, but the energy is focused in the fjords better. That’s why they’re so common in those locations.

Fun fact about the Vajont dam: being in a closed valley the wave actually did a 3 way clear off, the first wave was the original and when it reached out the end of the valley, it came back on the 2 villages and it repeated the process one more time. If you go now day to the valley there is a photographic Museum of this cathastrophy. There is also a very well documented video ( in Italian ) of a guy called Nova Lectio ( he is an Italian who speaks about global historical geopolitics, and Italian history)

The man and his son you mentioned were Ulrichs and according to several interviews I’ve watched Howard Ulrich said the wave was a LOT taller than 75ft when it reached them and broke the anchor chain. He also said that the wave took them far above the trees (which were themselves pretty damn tall and growing quite high above the bay) before the wave finally overtook them and deposited the boat intact back in the bay.

One thing you should definitely look into is the Chicxulub Impactor- basically the asteroid that wiped out the dinosaurs. I was obsessed with the topic a short while ago, and it blew my mind even considering a tsunami could conceivably reach 1 mile in height. And jfc even though the possibility of an extinction-level event like that happening in the next few thousand years is close to zero, it still terrifies the shit outta me how helplessly resigned to their fateful demise mankind would be.

Fantastic video man. Even made me subscribe. Just a note about that 524m height in Lithuya bay is the height the wave went up on the surrounding mountains. While the wave itself was ‘comparably’ small to the height (still bloody massive) it had enough momentum to run up the mountain very high. Mind you trying to figure this out from the information about Lituya is like having an aneurysm.

24:22 I think they only brought up the salmon was brought up so much is cuz they were the only ones impacted. I can give you a better answer doe The short version is this: salmon spend most of their lives in open ocean but spawn in head waters. They hatch in head waters, where they spend their early life (1-3 years). Once per year all the big babies all school up and head down stream to the ocean, and they memorize the journey. They spend most of their lives in the open ocean (1-7 years). Just before mating season all the salmon that have reached sexual maturity (2-8 years) fatten themselves up. Once bulked up they stop eating (forever) and head up stream. They go to damn near the exact spot they themselves hatched to lay their eggs. Job done they kinda just amble around until they starve to death. I'm assuming since they are making a huge deal about this it did change the water system, which is bad. Really bad. It effectively ended the family line of all the salmon that traveled through there. It was a big lake, meaning a lotta headwaters, and it wasn't very far inland either. Considering some salmon swim upwards of a 1,000 miles and this was damn near the coast.... yeah. Just one wrong turn and hundreds of thousands (could be in the millions?) of salmon just won't find their way back home. For sure it's in the hundreds of millions of salmon of eggs wont get laid.
